      The hype:

[quote-NY_Eater]The biggest food and musical festival this city has ever seen is coming to Prospect Park this May. And it's called The Great GoogaMooga.

Superfly, the people behind Bonnaroo and other major music fests, announces today that the festival will take place in Prospect Park on May 19 and 20 and will feature an impressive line up of food vendors including Hill Country, Frankies Spuntino, Roberta's, The Spotted Pig, Momofuku Milk Bar, Vinegar Hill House, M. Wells (back from the dead), DBGB, Red Rooster, and many many more. In total there will be 75 food vendors in eight different food pavilions (including Allan Benton's "Hamageddon"), 35 brewers, and 20 live performances. Phew. Tickets to the festival are free and can be had at here on the official site starting next Thursday, March 15 at noon.

For those who want VIP access, there will be an extra paid option that will include better sight lines for the shows, access to something called "Marcus Samuelsson's 1920's Harlem Renaissance Party," performances by comedian Aziz Ansari and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, and special demos and seminars. See below for the full description of a few of the pavilions and the full food line up. What about the music you ask? Those details have yet to be announced.

These experiences will take place under tents with designs inspired by Munich’s Oktoberfest and Napa’s Wine Country;

      · THE PIZZA EXPERIENCE bringing to life New York’s world-famous reputation for making the best pies in the country with a gathering of the city’s top pizzerias.

brokelyn » Great GoogaMooga! Sounds like something grandma would exclaim to her cats when she comes home from church to find they tore up a yarn bag. But if you’re a Brooklyn foodie you probably already know it’s a massive food/booze/music festival the folks behind Bonnaroo (Superfly Presents) are bringing to Prospect Park on May 19 and 20. When I say massive, I mean friggin’ huge people. First of all it’s FREE. According to the press release and newly launched website, attendees must register to obtain a ticket for either day, and reservations open March 15 at noon. The Festival will sprawl across Prospect Park’s Nethermead area, and “has the capacity to host tens of thousands of food and music fans per day.” What else can you expect? So very much more!

      TICKETS
General admission registration allows entry for you + 3 friends (there is also an “Extra Mooga” VIP option for $249.50 that gets you behind the scenes for elbow rubbing with the talent, free grub, parties and other good stuff).

      FOOD
Superfly hooked up with the absolute crème of New York food royalty to curate the ultimate New York foodie experience. The Festival will host approximately 75 food vendors, 35 brewers, and 30 winemakers, the initial list of New York food and hospitality royalty that will be on site can be found here.

But to give you an idea, some of the boldface partners include Anthony Bourdain (author and host of No Reservations), Tom Colicchio (chef and Top Chef judge), Marcus Samuelsson (Red Rooster), Daniel Boulud (DBGB), Eddie Huang (Baohaus), April Bloomfield (The Spotted Pig), Roberta’s, Big Gay Ice Cream Shop, Russ & Daughters, Frankie’s Spuntino, etc., etc., etc.

      BEER
The beer selection is in the capable hands of Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery and vino courtesy of Peter Eastlake, Superfly’s Director of Wine Programming, and Paul Grieco of Terrior, Terrior TriBeCa, Hearth and The Summer of Riesling Tour.

      THE LAYOUT
The festival grounds will be organized into eight food and drink pavilions including: “THE HAMAGEDDON (setting the deliciousness of the pig against a rock and roll inspired design and featuring bacon selections by Allan Benton); THE UrBARN (with farm-to-fork restaurants and a number of seminars on nutrition, sustainability, and eating locally.

Seminars will be hosted in collaboration with non-profits like Just Food); THE BEER & WINE EXPERIENCES (showcasing 35 craft brewers and 30 winemakers (both domestic and international) under tents with designs inspired by Munich’s Oktoberfest and Napa’s Wine Country); THE PIZZA EXPERIENCE (bringing to life New York’s world-famous reputation for making the best pies in the country with a gathering of the city’s top pizzerias).”

      MUSIC
OK, this is the part that’s still yet to be revealed. While many will agree that chefs are the new rock stars, there will also be actual rock stars. The lineup is forthcoming, but Superfly promises two stages featuring approximately 20 artists of local and national renown across a variety of musical genres.

So far, we know Aziz Ansari and DJ set by LCD Soundsystem will perform for the VIPs, so stay tuned to find out the entertainment for the rest of us plebes.

IS IT GOING TO BE RAD?
Sure sounds like it. As if we needed another reason to be arrogant Brooklyners, now we get the good vibes and cultural experience of Bonnaroo without the annoyance of sleeping in tents and mid-summer heat dust bowl conditions in our own beautiful backyard

“Prospect Park is delighted to be the location for The Great GoogaMooga,” said Prospect Park Administrator and President of the Prospect Park Alliance Emily Lloyd in a press release. “We know that this will be a wonderful celebration of food, music and Prospect — three things that make Brooklyn such a wonderful place to live, work and play,”

In the words of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz at this morning’s press conference “If ur thinking of missing The Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park this May, let me use an old Brooklyn term: fuhgeddaboudit!” (via @googamooga).

I'm really psyched for this. Trying to reserve tickets tomorrow for the Saturday date. It sounds like an outdoor pay-as-you-go ChoiceEats. I hope the weather's good.

I got wait-listed after trying for about an hour and getting closed out each time. Why do I think I'll find tickets to the "free" event on StubHub later?

Ticket situation was a major cluster fuck. Eventbrite handled the ticketing and they seem to be an amateur operation.

Hmm. I did email them this afternoon after seeing the same email on Facebook and I just got a ticket confirmation for the day I asked for. I didn't mention the day I wanted in my email to them, so maybe one of my attempts to get a ticket worked earlier today? Mysterious.

I hoping to get tickets too. Seems like everyone I know, me included, had issues with the registration yesterday.

Everyone relax: Even after the ticket debacle, you might still get into the Great GoogaMooga

After a harrowing day-long ticket saga and ensuing firestorm of pissed-off tweets and scathing commentary (see Brokelyn, FiPS and Gothamist), last night at about 9pm GoogaMooga ticket confirmations started rolling into the inboxes of many disgruntled Brooklynites, myself included. Now I kind of feel like an a-hole. After speaking to a spokesperson, we have been assured that there will be a “significant amount” more free tickets distributed closer to the date of the event. As mentioned at the press conference a few weeks back, the Nethermead grounds of Prospect Park can accommodate 40,000 revelers per day. Access codes will be distributed by email to everyone that received confirmations yesterday by April 3. GoogaMooga encourages you to share these codes with your friends. No one likes waste, and they want this to be a great big free-for-all party, so if the access codes are not redeemed for tickets, those codes will be recycled for redistribution on a rolling basis. So, we all just need to relax, man.The whole point of this free thing is to bring the good vibes and celebratory atmosphere, usually reserved for hippie festivals in far off locales, to our fair borough, and all the hating is totally killing the buzz. What did we really expect? It’s a food, booze and music festival in BROOKLYN: This is the stuff we live for (and apparently feel entitled to, judging from the Twitter and comment firestorm yesterday).

The GoogaMooga folks were inundated with the wrath of angry Brooklynites and local bloggers, but they responded by circulating an email address ( info@googamooga.com) so the disgruntled masses who skipped lunch only to be repeatedly timed out in the ticketing process could voice their complaints. Also they began directly responding to tweets and even responding to comments on the local blogs (including Brokelyn). So obviously they were doing lots of stuff to make things right and restore peace and order to the Googa-verse.

I still find it hard to believe that the Superfly folks were unprepared for major site traffic given that they have loads of experience putting on large scale events like this and are based in New York. EventBrite claimed formal responsibility and even sent an apologetic email to Fucked in Park Slope. But as a pretty major ticket distributor, they should know what they’re doing and have a server that can handle large capacity, so I’m not entirely convinced. Maybe it was a scalper issue like the recent Kraftwerk and Radiohead debacles? PR ploy to detonate the blogosphere/twitterverse (all press is good press)? Attempt to push the pricy VIP tickets?

Anyway, now that we’re past the wielding pitchforks phase and back on the psyched-track, let’s get rational about what to expect in May. We’re sure the lines will be long and the hot dogs will be overpriced. But with any luck, this will become an annual institution that will benefit local business and culture. Everyone just needs to stop being douchey and get into the hippie-zen frame of mind.

Damn. I hope more tickets do come up otherwise this will be another thing to add to the Had To Sacrifice list we're gilding and giving to the kid on his 18th birthday (or whenever he complains we never let him do anything fun.)

I can't be trawling the internet regularly anymore to catch Heads Ups like this early registration. WhyNot, if you hear of when these other tickets are available would you mind dropping me a note if you remember? It's all I can do to check the facebook these days.

The Nethermead has been completely fenced off in order to prepare for this event.

Semi trucks, generators, and cops were all present when I surveyed the scene via bike last night. As a result of this event and the Brooklyn Half Marathon, this weekend should be really busy.

...perhaps not the weekend to expect a quiet weekend in the park.

I didn't get "tickets" to this event but to everyone going, do not miss the Dinosaur BBQ stall. Best BBQ in the city, actually the best I've had in Ny state to be honest. I might try to hop a fence just to grab some lunch. It might be easier than going to Harlem lol.

On your advice and others, I did make sure to hit up Dino bbq. It was a very good bbq pork sandwich. The spicy mango bbq sauce was great, and I usually don't go for sweet bbq. The beer and soda lines were a complete mess, but the concerts were great. If I didn't get so sunburnt I'd still be there to listen to the Roots.

I had a Char 4 sausage. It was excellent!

The sun was hotter than we'd expected...should have worn shorts and a t-shirt, rather than jeans and long-sleeves. We wilted pretty quickly, and didn't stay as long as we'd intended.

Hindsight is 20/20, but -from what I have heard from various sources- they could have spent less on security, and used the savings to hire a few more servers and cashiers.

Hopefully the organizers of the next big event will work out a few of the kinks this one experienced.

I had a good time today. My husband went yesterday and today. HATED yesterday and enjoyed today. It was a lot less crowded and they took cash everywhere. I'm sure next year will be better.

My biggest complaint was that they didn't list which shows were "extra mooga" and which were regular until this week - meaning I got psyched for shows I then didn't have access to. But I enjoyed the music I did get to see.

A post-event discussion on how events like this provide needed revenue to the Parks Alliance:

IFrom reading other articles, I think the Alliance got $100K for an event that planned to make much much much more than that while taking over a very large portion of the park and causing a fair amount of damage--the sections that had to be replanted (with large crews and lots of machines that surely cost quite a bit of money) post-Mooga are still looking a little sad and still fenced off to park users. Another issue I had with it was that Googa Mooga had security preventing people from using main paths--I witnessed many people who walk through the park as part of their daily commute forced to take much lengthier and sometimes muddy routes by those guards and there was no warning posted that those areas like Wellhouse Drive would be closed.

I hope that if this event happens again, the Alliance gets a much larger chunk of money and maybe allows them less time for set-up and break-down, which this round took 3 weeks total and that was soon after another non-public event took over the Neathermead for 2 weeks. Personally, I would be happy if Googa Mooga was not allowed back unless they cough up at least $500K.

Also, it didn't bother me, but I was surprised how loud the music was. I live in Park Slope near the bandshell and we can't hear those shows from home but could hear Googa Mooga shows (and ID bands we knew) with our windows shut. I guess they didn't have the same sound limits that Celebrate Brooklyn has.

Park of why Googa Mooga was able to get such a low rate for suing the park, was that it agreed to give away tickets for free.

...the Alliance reportedly would have charged more if they Googa Mooga people were going to charge everyone admission.

Is that the answer? ...only rent out the park to entities that are able to pay a large fee, as a result of charging admission?
