i've always thought that when you do this you're supposed to leave your # on your dash in case the person you're blocking in has to leave. at least, i always do this.

now blocked in, can't leave. and parked what i thought was xx feet from a hydrant so this specifically couldn't happen, and someone scunched their car in behind mine.

(putting aside the fact that not getting tickets for this is a "courtesy" from the police in the first place)

what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

      So, two things:

      1. Since when common sense or courtesy become the norm in New York City?

      2. If you know you have to leave at say, Tuesday sometime between 10am and 1pm, then you shouldn't have left your car across the street from a Tuesday 10am - 1pm spot. I guarantee that last night there was a spot sitting right across the street from you.

      3. Let's definitely "put aside" the no ticket policy the fuzz extends to us. The alternative is that 25% of the entire car population of Park Slope must find a place to legally hang out during the hours of of 8am-4pm on any given day.

Agreed - I think the OP is drastically overestimating the level of common courtesy in this city. Per my experience, the majority of people in this city/neighborhood are selfish, self-centered assholes.

      1. I've always done that, or at least been able to keep an eye out from the window

      2. yes if you have to leave when ASP is in effect anyway why move to the other side?

I guarantee that last night there was a spot sitting right across the street from you

      Riiiight

      3. 8am-4pm? the regs are only 90 mins.
Maybe if double parkers were ticketed 25% of people would choose to get rid of their car.

Yeah, it is the courteous thing to do. Problem is, people suck. I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I think you can technically get people towed, but the cops generally won't get there fast enough to make it worth the while.

And I love the "guarantee last night there was a spot sitting right across the street from you" comment. 'Cause that is totally never true in my neck of the woods.

What's with blaming the victim here? Yes, you are absolutely supposed to leave your contact info in the windshield if you block someone in.

Dance Rehearsal, people who can't be home babysitting their cars twice a week usually find a good spot ahead of time, like a couple days before, or the night before. Automatically double parking twice a week is a lazy, unnecessary habit. Every time I see a dozen people inconvencienced by a big truck that cannot get by an unattended double parked car, as I did this morning, I think about how entirely entitled a culture we live in. Why shouldn't double parkers get ticketed? Because it's hard to park in advance? Boo hoo. It's also against the law.

      snarkslope, thank you.

i do, indeed, have common sense and said so above: i parked my car in the spot after the hydrant for this very reason, so i could be sure to pull out were i blocked in. another very tiny car came and pulled in behind me.

spots open on the street at 9 pm? maybe on the weekend.

I once had a co-worker that thought that street cleaning, and the need to move his car, was an appropriate excuse to not be scheduled to work before noon on Thursday, or whatever day his street cleaning was... In any event, he is, to this day, the laziest human being that I have ever met.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.

BP, always get in good with the neighborhood busybody. You know, that old man or woman that stands outside everyday looking at the neighbors coming and going and silently passing jusdgement on all. Ten to one he or she knows whose car that is double parked and what house they went into.

Do you need to make a huge fuss out of it happening one time, though? Next time get even closer to the hydrant or a spot at the beginning/end of a block and/or leave right before/right after alternate side. It seems like you had the right idea to park in that spot, but it just so happens this one time someone boxed you in. Move on, right?

Huge fuss? Just get closer to the hydrant? I'm beginning to think many of you folks live in some alternate universe where parking is easy and manners don't matter.

cause that's totally going to happen.

brooklynpotter next time keep a set of these http://www.zendextool.com/gojak/gojak-6200.html in the trunk. Someone blocks you jack up their car and move it. When you move it make sure you face it the wrong way on the street. Leave a note on the windshield, "Next time leave your contact #" After that they will learn their lesson.

I block you in today, you block me in tomorrow. Don't leave your car till regs actually in effect, move it back 15 mins before regs end. That's how we've been doing it for years, really no big deal till someone new moves in.

I don't think the question is so much as why OP didn't do this or that, but rather one of "how do we get the message across to car owners in general about this etiquette?"

Whenever I block someone in, I always leave a note. And when someone has blocked me, I've been able to call them and request that the move their car for me.

Another good thing about leaving contact info is that your neighbors (like me) will call you when you've forgotten that ASP has ended and your car is the only one still DP-ed. Maybe that's the message.
