Dear Dram Shop, It is with a heavy heart that I post this online but you just don't seem to have a clue about the slide that you have taken in the last few months. From the week that you opened to the first time(of many) that I ordered your cheeseburger, or the time that on the eve of our wedding my wife and I took our siblings to hang out for the first time as group. One thing has bothered me consistently. The horrible, out of place music that you play at an absurdly high volume. What gives Dram Shop? I'll put your food up against any bar food in the city. Your selection of bourbons is top notch and your beer on draft is better than average. But your music is awful. And after visit after visit I've realized what it is.....it is being played from the ipods of your young female bartenders and it is really bad. Two weeks ago I stopped by for a couple of beers and to watch the end of some college football games. The female bartender was playing Sarah Mclachlan, Feist and other assorted terrible non-appropriate music. She had no clue and seemed more concerned with texting and hanging out with the servers rather than refilling customer's drinks. A recent trip to watch NFL games resulted in being subjected to similar music...on a SUNDAY afternoon. Play the audio from the big game, Giants, Jets, whatever just don't play 311 or No Doubt. Please, I'm begging you. Are you a sports bar? Why tease me with the TVs and direct TV if you allow your employees to ruin the atmosphere with their shitty music? *to the owner* I've seen you come in and turn down the music on several occasions. Cap the volume. Do something. You know it is annoying, yet it continues. Thanks so much, Dave on 8th.

I have to agree. Many a time, Julius Orange and I have headed to dram because I A) love the burgers here and B ) forget about the shitty, mind numbing music they play. I am single. Julius is single. We do not like each other "in that way" so I loathe to have to lean in to hear what the hell he's saying, making it look like an intimate conversation. Half the time, I just smile and nod at him. I have no idea what he's talking about. Also, what's with the bouncer/doorman? This is Park Slope, not the Meat Packing District.Babies aren't meat! They're not even people!

any place that lacks many dancers on a huge dance floor should not play loud music.I blame such comments on beer.

must've had that same bartendress. i've said it a million times, gimme an old salt who knows more about talking than texting, and i'm happy. these girls who are hired for their looks and then happily ignore you should be fired. isn't there a recession? can't we find someone who actually wants your job?!Ask a burning question, get a burning answer.

totally agree. Only went once and it was so loud we had to repeat ourselves several times just to have a 1:1 conversation
-
Dram Shoppe is only good for the INSANELY huge basket of fries to soak up many hours of prior drinking. Too bad I always forget their kitchen closes at like 7pm and said fries can't be ordered.
-
They turned Radiohead off for audio of Game 1 of the ALDS. So I guess my most recent experience was quite different.

LOL!
Damn, I still haven't gone to try that burger.

It definitely wasn't my kind of scene when I tried it. Some of the food was good (the fries) but most was only so-so. Good beer selection served very cold though.

There's nothing worse than getting a sore throat and a headache from screaming 10 times into your friend's ear "DO YOU WANT ANOTHER BEER? I SAID DO YOU WANT ANOTHER BEER?!! ANOTHER BEER!!!!!!!!" This conversation would make sense at a rock concert or dance club, but not at a cheeseburger bar.I blame such comments on beer.

I fell back in love with the place this past summer when they would play Mets games and it was a great scene during the week. Usually it was one of two male bartenders who took care of things every night. The NCAA tourney last spring was a great couple of weeks at Dram Shop. No doubt they can step it up for big games....that is what makes the recent "scene" so disappointing. This isn't a case of one random person complaining about a meal or an experience, it is a case of multiple people agreeing that the music makes Dram Shop intolerable and agreeing that some of the young female bartenders don't give a shit about being a good bartender. I want this place to do great. It is between two places that I visit daily and it sucks to see something go unfixed. Stop the fucking music. -
Yeah that one chick who works at Dram and at Angry Wades can be a bit fuckin' clueless at times. But she is easy on the eyes. I try to avoid any place that plays No Doubt or Dave Mathews (I'm looking at you Red Horse cafe).
-
Dave, you've been picked up on FiPS.
-
The music in here is generally terrible, but the times I have been in there it has been the male bartenders playing the music from their ipods.
-
1) The music can be interesting there, but I rarely notice it as out of place just mainly eclectic, from 80's retro and punk rock to more main stream music. It can be a little loud but it is bar not a restaurant. 2)The Burgers are amazing all my buddies from Manhattan come to BK to get the Burgers and drink $3 high life, watch sports and play shuffle board 3)Staff is great there hands down, I am now friends with many of them. I love the staff they keep me laced with beers and often help steal booths from other people. Oh wait that might have been you, maybe if you tip more than you pay for NY Times they would take care of you too 4)If you don't like sports don't go, simple as that. You will have my loud (very likely drunk) self yelling at whatever is either happening on the TV or while playing Shuffle Board Dont make more of something than it is. The Dram is a "Sports" "Bar" with some awesome activities and decent priced drinks. I spend more time there than I should, but for us who dont treat as restaurant and treat it as what it is a Sports Bar-Lounge enjoy the hell out of that place with no compliant!
-
Sorry Dave I didn't read before I posted. I figured you were some sort of Sport Hating Hipster that usually run into in my conversations about the Dram Shop! I have never experienced the Sarah Mclachlan, but I guess I am also drinking and dont really care. I have wondered why they dont give us the ability to control the music and or if we want to hear the games! I have noticed it is quieter on weekdays, but the weekends it can be pretty dominating! Try sending this letter to them. The owners is a really good dude!
-
My God Beaver, so you have no idea I'm speaking to you in Basque at the bar? I have to say I've never noticed the crappy music any more than at most bars. Sorry, but I'll take the cute female bartender playing her Vanessa Carlton over dudes behind the bar. The main draw that gets me out of the house and into a public bar is the fact that I can see women there. There simply are not women lounging around my apartment drinking booze. But the thing I have noticed about the Dram is that they seem to let 12 year old girls into the bar to drink. OK, maybe they're 17, but legally there's no difference. It's pretty skeevy.

Julius Orange » There simply are not women lounging around my apartment drinking booze.
You're doing it wrong.
-
J - I generally ignore you even when I can hear you. Just so you know, the cute female bartenders like me better than you.Babies aren't meat! They're not even people!
-
i don't mind the "scene." matter of fact, the advantage of a sports bar is its simplicity. i don't even care about the type of music--and didn't notice it was so loud. but as a paying customer, i don't give a shit how cute a girl is, i want my beer, and i want it now.Ask a burning question, get a burning answer.
-
I know I'm doing it wrong. All the women are standing up. How can I get them to lounge? And Beev: Pbbbbbbbbttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
-
um, what's the dram shop?

PTR88 » ...the Sarah Mclachlan...
Sorry, but I'll take the cute female bartender playing her Vanessa Carlton over dudes behind the bar.
Just so you know, the cute female bartenders like me better than you.

Mystery Solved! Though for my milage, cute bartender girls are generally a good moneymaking idea (drunk people with poor judgement spend a lot of money around lovely ladies), but a HORRIBLE idea for a romp around the four posts (note to assholes from everyone who has ever served the public: just because I talk to you and smile doesn't mean I want to show you my baby-blaster). When I am at a bar I want to put alcohol in my blood and perhaps make some poor decisions about who to go home with. I do not want to know how much you love Dave Matthews. Dram Shop is generally okay, but if I can't hear the disinterest in a woman's voice, I can't give you my drinkin' money. -
Vanessa Carlton was hyperbole. I don't think I've ever actually heard that in a bar, and would probably walk right out. My point is at a bar I want eye candy more than ear candy. If I want music I know I'll like, I've my iPod.

new2hood » Dave, you've been picked up on FiPS.
Fu$k FIPS. I loathe that blog and they need to get their facts in line before they jump into a discussion online. My favorite part from their post is this: "In truth, I've stilll never tried the burger at Dram Shop because the two times we tried going, the service was so fucking horrendous, we walked out." Which is interesting because previously the same "writer" wrote this in a review of Bar Toto. "Truth be told, we walked our asses over to S. Slope in the rain last night to go to Dram Shop. I have been dying to try their burger, and thought it would make make for a fun dinner spot. Unfortch, everyone else in Park Slope had the very same damn idea, and there wasn't an empty seat in the house." So they knock the service despite the fact that she mentioned previously that it was too crowded to get a seat. Or did it just sound better to change their story? Fu$k off FIPS. -
By the way, I was really disappointed they called this the Dram Shop. I remember when it was a crappy pet store. Wasn't it called the Brooklyn Aquarium or something like that? I always thought it would be cool to make it a bar, but keep the name.
-
Love the burgers, love the Direct TV, hate the loudness of the music. I don't really care what type of music it is, I just want to be able to hear the person next to me. Agreed that this has been a problem since DS opened.
-
i went to a bar once that had a jukebox with a sign reading "bar tender has the right to skip any song". They exercised that right often, and based on the response of the bargoers to a particular song. That made it impossible for Radiohead...Though his rants seem nonsensical to most passersby, some astute listeners say they contain evidence of higher learning.

Good burgers, and they have the tabletop shuffleboard. +2 right there. +48 for their bourbon selection.===
Doing just fine, thank you. -
BrookFetish » Good burgers, and they have the tabletop shuffleboard. +2 right there. +48 for their bourbon selection.
I go there a lot on Wed. & Fri. for the shuffleboard. The thin waiter buy is there and is attentive, falls all over himself working hard. Met a friend there Tuesday night, the female bartender took forever to notice me, which wasn't exactly blood-boilingly annoying but, the vibe was totally different. Public spaces are often ruled by the staf - good staff, the place is like your living room. Lousy ones and there's ZERO spirit."Half a mile from the county fair and the rain came pouring down
Me and Billy standing there with a silver half-a-crown."
