I inherited several books of stamps many years ago. I don' t remember who assessed them but if you go online you can find someone. I will say that they weren't worth as much as the person who left them to us thought - not even close. The assessor (and their were two of them) said every stamp collector thinks there collection is worth a fortune.

Check eBay to confirm that most collected stamps are completely worthless. I think this experience is all too common. Lots of people have kept stamps socked away, from back in the heyday of stamp collecting, in the expectation that they will someday be worth tons of money. Unless you've got Penny Black, you'll need to make alternate arrangements for retirement.

I don't remember exactly but we got somewhere between $5,000-8,000 for the stamps - but the person who left them to us thought they were worth hundreds of thousands

I had almost all the plate blocks from the '70s. I wound up selling them for face value to my old boss who used them as postage.
But she made me lick them and put them on the outgoing mail myself.
Don't get me started
