On my credit card bill I got charged $15 by a business called “BIAGIAS PLACE” listed as being in “Brooklyn, NY.” But I have no memory/idea what this place is, it’s not in the yellow pages, and there’s no trace of it in Google/Bing search results. So does anyone know of a business around here that uses “BIAGIAS PLACE” as an alternative name?

Call the credit card company and dispute the charges. They will do the research and reverse the charges in the meantime. If it turns out that Biagias is an alias for a legit charge you made, it's not a big deal - you will tell the credit card company that the charges are legit (or they will come back with a signed slip from you) and the charges will be put back on your card.

A lot of businesses in NYC don't update their credit processing accounts for some weird reason... if you call the credit card company, they can probably just give you the address. You can then google the address and find out what the *actual* company is. It's probably just a bodega or a store or restaurant still operating with the info of a previous company. Othewise, do what flexichick says. I only hesitate because charge backs/disputes (1) take the cash out of the merchant's bank account until it resolved, and (2) could cause them to end up with a higher "discount" rate and lose money... long term. I would, however, take the opportunity to yell at them the next time you're at the store. Lazy basterds.

I agree with tybur6, don't challenge the charge until you find out the address or phone number. It is probably the name of the holding company of a bodega, bar or cafe. American Express online has the option to find more detail on a charge, but I'm not sure all credit card issuers have that facility. Merchants can turn nasty if you charge back a legitimate charge, they may refuse your credit cards in the future, so a call to the credit card company is a good first step.

Thanks. But I actually already called the Credit Card Company - and even they were unable to locate the source. Though they did cancel the charge. The real problem is that this is actually the second straight month I’ve been charged exactly $15 from this BIAGIAS PLACE - so I don’t want to keep calling my Credit Card Company every month to deal with this. -

But if it’s the name of a previous company, then there still should be some trace of that name somewhere on the internet, right? I tried using Google, Bing, Ask, and Yahoo. Yet I found nothing. -

Yet I found nothing.
not necessarily. for example, when i lived in chicago, a new persian restaurant opened on my block. they got all their licensing and so forth done, then hired waitstaff. one of the new staff members pointed out that their name -- which meant something nice in farsi -- meant something not so nice in spanish, a language spoken by many more people in the neighborhood. they changed their name before printing permanent menus, getting a sign, or anything else, but all official sources still showed the old name. i bet the old name never made it online, since they were only open with it for less than a week. nevertheless, that charge sounds weird.Bumping ancient threads with bot-like bullshit -
For many months I kept getting a strange charge on my family cell phone bill. Turned out that one of my kids had signed up for a joke-a-day service on her cell. It took many months to find out where the charge was coming from, since Sprint also profited from the charge and so was in no hurry to make it go away. I understand that these charges are coming to your credit card, rather than your phone bill, but could they be from something you intentionally or unintentionally signed up for - or worse, didn't sign up for - on your cell phone?

Yet I found nothing.
I think this is one of the most common myths going... that every bit of information is on the internet somewhere. It's just not true, not even close. I can't recall the exact figures but the amount of information NOT on the publicly available internet far outweighs info that is. Obviously, tons of stuff is digitized, but most academic research, government records, and just about every book ever published isn't on the internet.

Could it be from something that I did not sign up for on my cell phone? That’s as good a guess as anything so far. The idea that it was only the name of the business for a week before being changed, is a good guess too. You're right that not everything is on the Internet. It bothers me that my Credit Card Company is unable to locate this source. But I guess that’s just the way it is. Thanks for all the help. I’ll keep you all posted if I figure anything out.

Also, remember that in NYC its not unusual for companies to use aliases, which are known as "DBAs" (Doing Business As). Especially for small businesses, they may incorporate as LLC's then use a DBA for the business. Example: 123 LLC d/b/a Charlies Smoke House
