And so the former Aji restaurant becomes a "bagel cafe" or something like that? Location 9th street between 4th and 5th Ave? Anyone know what is up with this. All visible is a cloth sign and some renovation going on behind closed doors.

Bagel cafe? Bleh, so boring.
That corner gets so much foot traffic from commuters, I can see a cafe making the rent there, but couldn't it handle something better?

Well it is actually called the Bagel PUB. Now that sounds interesting but asked the new owner and there is no liquor license. they said they will serve lunch.."hot food"... I hope they do have a concept and if their concept does not work then they are smart enough to change it as they respond to customers or the lack of them as things go on. They say they will be open this Tuesday.

Well it is open!. They are neighbors so need to go in and get a cup of coffe or something...just to be friendly.

Aji sucked

I have to at least go in and get a cup of coffee...lol! They are serving lunch foods like omelets, lasagna, wraps. What they did with the place looks attractive.

The only traffic that spot gets--regardless of whatever business is there--are commuters, so a bagel type joint is the best idea for that space. Also, I don't know if Bagel Pub struck a deal w/ the landlord but when the spot was vacant I inquired about the rent and it was 5th Ave-in-the-North-Slope high.

But....there are a lot of commuters so my guess is the Bagel Pub has a good chance of success. There seems to be constant stream of customers and at times it looks busy. Easy to evaluated because I live close by and the front doors are open to the street. Lovely people own it and the staff is friendly. They do delivery. Spoke to owner and they are constantly evaluating what is working and not with the menu and the feel of the place so my sense is they won't let the flourish of the opening momentum fade away. Whatever the rent is I guess these people actually had a business plan and capital to get it going or the ability to borrow... at least it seems like that to me. I know some of the other businesses were flying by the seats of their pants from day one. This business seems to be back by some professionalism as well as intention.

Oh and the name is Bagel Pub.

I wish a white castle or taco bell would move to that stretch, or an Olive Garden

When the time is right, Mamacita.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
White Castle--or Burger King, neither of which are in the 'hood--would be awesome. Late night ratburgers rule!
(There was a Taco Bell Express on 3rd Ave and 14th St but it was replaced with a Subway.)
