It seems Verizon is getting ready to wire my building for FIOS, so I'd love to hear from anyone who already has it. Personally I'm most interested in internet service--TimeWarner is so unreliable and slow. I'm in the north Slope--does anyone around here have FIOS yet? Is it fast, reliable?

Near GAPm betweeb 7th & 8th. Verizon has only just approached building management. I believe they will come to inspect soon and see what the wiring might involve. So it's not going to be immediate.

since I also asked here about this months ago, let me share my experience.

I got my FIOS over the summer and have no reason to be anything other than happy. I got internet and phone. it costs the same as my time warner did, but the basic internet is 10X faster (15/5mps) and I get voicemail for free w/my phone bundle. I would recommend FIOS over time warner to anyone who asks. I have had no service issues at all.

the one thing they don't tell you is that they install a fair amount of equipment. and it's not that small - two utility boxes: one the size of a large dictionary, the other about the size of a record album, but as thick as a dictionary. they have to be mounted to a wall next to each other near an outlet. so make sure that you have a good place to have them mounted before hand. give it some thought. this may not be a problem for everyone, but it kind of was for me. oh yeah... the boxes have lots of little green led lights to annoy you if it's in plain sight.

I hope this helps. I wouldn't go back to time warner.

Wow, those basic internet speeds sound dreamy. Have you actually been running tests to see if they are the max or the averages? I've been wondering what people think of it after having it a while. I still think all telecom companies here suck and are evil!

For those of you like us stuck with TWC, we recently upgraded our internet service (hadn't realized this plan was an option until a long conversation with a sales rep). On the basic internet plan (10/1 down/up I think) we were actually getting about 5/<.5. I paid for an upgrade, which required a modem swap. I think we're paying $15 more per month for a max of 30/5 and usually getting about 18-25 down (lower of those #s at high traffic times) and 4 or 5 up, which we desperately need as we're finally backing up 100s of GBs of files somewhere other than in our home (would hate to lose all those photos and other files to a fire or theft). I hate to give TWC more money but the higher speeds have been really nice for our usage.

Yep. checked the speeds multiple times on speedtest.net. consistent 15/5. I was getting 1.5/.5 at time warner for the same $$.

Just wanted to add a few things: we live on GAP and we recently got FIOS TV and Internet. They tend to throttle your internet speeds at about 5MBPs FASTER than what they televise it seems. I consistently get about 20MBPs/10MBPs.

Cablevision was a nightmare, but the one thing I would say is that while the DVR is better and the onscreen guide is miles better, if you had HD, CableVision basically got rid of the SD channels automatically. With FIOS, you have to actually go to 502 to get CBS HD. Makes scrolling tough because not all channels are HD channels. Bouncing back and forth between the 200's and the 500/600's is a pain.

Small price to pay I guess.

At those speeds, the 404 messages come a LOT faster....cool.

I confirm Detour's numbers. I got FIOS one week ago and I am elated at the fast and reliable service. Is a far cry from the problems with Time Warner.

The people in my building are leaving TW in mass. Everybody I have talked to seems to be relieved and happy. This is not only in reason of the deals that Verizon gave us but also because of our previous experiences with TW.

The day the FIOS people came to install my service I got three unexpected calls from TW, offering triple play for 10 dollars less than Verizon. I still wonder how did they know, for I had not called them yet to cancel.

A few days back I went and dropped our TW machinery at their 5th ave office. There was a huge line of people waiting to do the same. Only three were there to pay bills. It tells you where the water is going.
