Went tonight - simply fabulous - everything was working in harmony. Met Julie, the owner - she was wonderful and gracious. Went around 7:30 and waiting no more than 15 minutes for a table. I had the Poblano Chili w/chorizo & potatoes, my wife had the Yucatán Shrimp w/cilantro & jalapeno marinade, pickled onions, & calamari coconut rice - the spices were right-on as was the heat level - simply delicious. The drinks were great, the service superior. This was one of our best restaurant experiences in PS. I'm convinced that they have worked out all the bugs and are here to stay. And what a amazing contribution to 7th Ave this place is. Viva La Barrio!

Nice! Going with my girlfriend and 6 others tonight. It'll be our second time there -- the first time was pretty good, but we weren't all starving, so we just shared some apps. Hope they handle large parties well.
-
I've checked out the menu a few times and it just looked overpriced. If it's actually good I may have to try it.When the experts are agreed, the opposite opinion cannot be regarded as certain.

we waited forever. small portions. ok food.Ask a burning question, get a burning answer.

Dinner was mostly delicious. My girlfriend's Pollo Con Mole was a miss -- the sauce wasn't awful by any means, but we've had better mole poblano sauce at every other Mexican/Southwestern place on the Slope that we've had. Besides that, everyone was happy with their meals. I had the Yucatan Shrimp and was completely satisfied. The service was outstanding as well. Quick, accurate, friendly, and when we ordered one guacamole appetizer for the table, they gave us a second on the house to make sharing easier. Note that they didn't split the one order into two -- they just gave us a second complete order. A small but very nice gesture of customer appreciation, IMO. I still prefer Santa Fe for Mexican, but I will gladly go back.

^^^ Interesting. I also had the Pollo Con Mole when I was there and also found it a bit off. It had a unique taste to it that I can't really describe as good or bad. It was just....well, different. Unlike any mole sauce I've ever had. The service was good and yes the portions are small with the prices a bit high, but all in all it was an enjoyable experience. I'd go again, I just wouldn't order the mole.

interesting how much tastes vary...i think santa fe is the worst (certainly one of the worst) restaurants i've ever eaten at in park slope. i live right near there, and don't even notice it's there anymore, in fact. totally off my radar. been looking forward to trying barrio. this might be the week... went to al di la last night and it continues to never disappoint me.
-
luv al di la more than my dogs - well, almost! For anyone interested, our current relatively immediate neighborhood restaurant rotation is... 1. Al di la 2. Moim 3. Barrio 4. Stone Park Cafe
-
Went there for the first time last night and had the short rib taco. $9 for three little, but fantastic tacos... lot's of meat and great flavour. The prices seemed about right and the other dishes I saw looked great. With an admittedly unsophisticated palette and a virtual bottomless pit of a stomach I tend to focus on other aspects of the dining experience. The staff appeared friendly, attentive and very hands off (I can't stand being constantly asked if everything is ok... if things weren't ok you'd know it).. So, I sat at the bar and watched a few innings of the Yankee game on a discreetly located flat screen with the bartender and what appeared to be the owner/or manager... Two very nice guys. Got two refills of chips without asking (which are fantastic)... In the end the bartender knocked $.40 off the bill in order to keep the coins from jangling... it's little things like that keep me coming back... I give the place 3.5 "drunken thumbs in the eye". And, yes, I just coined that.

those are some great ones, livetotravel. we have similar tastes. moim would be in my top 3 as well. haven't tried stone park yet (for dinner), but i'm also quite partial to alchemy these days. al di la is always number one for me. still need to try applewood too!
-
Applewood is AWESOME. Really some of the best food you'll find anywhere, imo. Except for brunch. I went on Sunday and it was crowded, very pedestrian, lacking in the service department, and really not worth the $$ or hype. But dinner is a different story.
-
good to hear they've gotten over the hump. i walked past it on Saturday night, and they had a pretty decent crowd going. Good for them. My second visit to the revamped La Taq wasn't nearly as good as my first, so I may be headed over to Barrio again soon.
-
My husband and I ended up there for brunch. I was amazed at how good the food really was. I keep thinking about it. I had the veggie enchiladas and he had the huevos rancheros . YUM. it was way more lunch then brunch.

Has Applewood's service at dinner improved. For the price (and quality of the food) the service really should be better than it was when I last went. -
I'll have to give Barrio another chance. I liked the bartender and the cocktail, but the enchilada sauce tasted like it came out of a can, which at those prices is not cool.
-
Jamzer, I thought the service at dinner was fine (was last there a couple of months ago), but it was godawful at brunch.
-
Make that three. I had the pollo con mole and wasn't thrilled by it. However, I did think the black bean soup was pretty good. Considering its a bit of walk from where I live, I probably won't be going back anytime soon.

We were going to go to Barrio last week but I noticed the reviews have been dropping off and getting progressively worse, so we went to Tacos Nuevo Mexico instead (big jump, I know). We had 4 delicious tacos, guac, chips & salsa, 3 sopes (the spicy pork are amazing), a shrimp tostada, and 2 pitchers of margaritas for under $50. The atmosphere in there really sucks, but the food and prices are so worth it.
-
we went to Barrio last week and it was Fabulous! we had a reservation so there was no wait and other people seemed to be seated reasonably quickly. the atmosphere is great--really beautiful decor, good music at just the right volume. our server was attentive but not intrusive. we had drinks, several appetizers (plantain empanadas are a standout), the gazpacho, and vegetarian enchiladas. the food was So good. it was really well spiced and the portions were just right. we were pleased that there were several vegetarian options (though another veg entree or two would be nice). i very highly recommend this place--it may have become my favorite ps restaurant.

went back for brunch today.....really seems like the kinks got worked out. had some great chilaquiles that surpassed even the ones I had at Dos Caminos once. i liked that the brunch menu, while having the obligatory huevos rancheros and all that, leaned more towards actual lunchtime food than a selection of waffles and pancakes the dishwasher probably made.

Stopped in at Barrio last night for drinks... we were enticed by their sign promising $5 margaritas... they delivered, and they were really good. Plus they gave us free chips and salsa. So, yum. Definitely will have to go back for dinner one of these days.

GTK! I was wondering how those $5 margaritas were. Add free chips & salsa to the deal & I'm there. -

Is the $5 marg happyhour? Or is it a once a week deal? I need details! Details![/quote] I should've asked if it was once a week. But it was definitely ALL NIGHT -- not just some crappy happy hour hours. So be on the look-out for the sign! -
Barrio is 0 for 2 with me. I went once and the waitress forgot to bring our app, the short rib tacos. She offered to put the order back in and did buy us a round so I was satisfied. But today I wanted to finally get the tacos and a margarita. I showed a bit before 4pm and was told they weren't serving food. Just drinks and chips/guac. Can't say I understand not serving all day on a Saturday. Bad business move.
-
I don't quite understand your complaint as Barrio's web site clearly spells it out - Sat & Sun Brunch 11-3PM, Dinner 5-11PM, Bar open all day.
-
I think the complaint is clear: I stopped by a restaurant that was open and couldn't get food. If that's their hours, that's their hours. I'm not going to hold it against them. It still blows though.
-
closing for an hour or two between brunch and dinner is pretty common practice actually. walked by dizzy's the other day and it was the exact same deal. it was 5, brunch was over and dinner didn't start till 6. no big deal. lots of other choices in this great city.
-
We stopped by last night at around 6:15PM and were seated immediately - inside by the window. BTW - they has $5.00 'ritas all night at the bar only. I got the Cochinita Pibil - roasted pork in banana leaf w/a killer tasty sauce - came w/re-fried black beans and rice and my wife got the Chicken Enchilada - also great tasting. Food was spectacular! Service was spot-on. I'm absolutely luvin' this place!

I've been twice, once when it first opened and again just a couple of weeks ago. (Since we generally go to restaurants when they are open, we found them serving drinks and food!) The food was very good both times and the service, which was very friendly, but slow, the first time, was much improved the second time. The most recent time we were there we had two appetizers, two main dishes and two margharitas and the bill, with tip, was less than $70. Not cheap, but well worth the price and we had a great time. No restaurant is going to please everyone all the time, but my wife and I are very happy with Barrio and I would venture a guess that this place is here to stay. Yippie!
