hi all-- new to ps, not sure if i'm repeating anyone, but where's the best grocery store? i'm at 16th between 4th and 5th, so something close would be cool, but am also down with a delivery service... thanks.
-
Key Food on 5th Avenue-it's far from you, but they do deliver and they have a large parking lot if you have a car.
-
Faiway if can get over there. Otherwise - Fresh Direct is my alternative favorite option.
-
Fresh Direct. Paying the delivery fee is worth it to avoid the surly check out girls at both 5th ave and 7th ave Key Food stores.
-
I find Fresh Direct's prices too high now (used to love them!) and while I agree that the cashiers at 7th Avenue are surly, I have luckily never had that problem at the 5th Avenue one
-
Another vote for Fairway or take the F to Ave I and go to the Stop and Shop. Steve's C-Town is expensive on 9th st btwn 5th and 6th Aves but has decent produce
-
There's a big Pathmark behind the 2nd Ave Lowe's. You could probably walk there and then take a car home. Sometimes I see guys waiting to see if you want one like at the Atlantic Mall, but not the quantities of cars, or you could call a local service to pick you up. Fairway is also nice, but farther from trains and a bit too far to walk probably. Zipcar is a good option for getting there, though.
-
you are very close to the union market on 7th avenue around 13th street or so... expensive, but good food.
-
In order, if you have transportation: 1) fairway 2) Key Foods on 5th (NOT on 7th - that one sucks) 3) Pathmark on 2nd (but never the one at Atlantic Mall) I left off Union Market and Back to the Land as I consider them more as specialty markets....not your everyday place
-
Infrequently do I order from Fresh Direct but if you shop "carefully" the produce is top notch and the variety of products is great. I tend to impulse buy...like great chocolate, and interesting beer and quiches and I could go on and on. I shop Fairway about once a month and it is terrific. I live close to the C Town on 9th street and that is the store I use the most.
-
I can't believe no one mentioned the Associated on 5th&Union. Its clean, has a good selection and their staff are the only cordial ones I have encountered in the Slope.
-
I'm very proud of this group... 9 replies and no mention of the co-op! Well done.

When I have to go local rather than delivery this is my choice too. It's even better now that it has expanded and remodeled. -
I like Steve's!!!!!!!! Yes it can be pricey, but they have good specials and their produce is really decent without being ridiculously overpriced like Union Market. And what about the Met on 5th and 16th? Their produce blows but they have tons of cheap stuff. You should read the grocery store options stickied thread on the greenwood heights board. I also like Eagle Provisions on 5th and 18th.
-
I don't have a car so I usually shop at C-Town; sometimes I go to the Associated on 5th; and for my thanksgiving Shopping I go to the Key Food on 5th (nice big aisles). If I had a car I'd go to Fairway. I tried Fresh Direct when I got discounts...too expensive and I was very dispappointed in the produce. Plus the two times I used them, they forgot something...sure they re-delivered with no charge, but I had to wait for a second delivery. And their packaging is so environmentally unfriendly...they put like 2 things in a boxPeanuts

thanks everyone!
-
and don't forget costco (i get stuff there i can freeze, like fish filets, quite cheap), plus amazing cheeses and salads. for smaller produce, nobody can beat rossman's.what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.
-
can I go to costco with you please?
-
ummm.. memberships are only like $45what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

I am a proud member of the Co-Op and LOVE it there - the people are friendly and welcoming, the prices around 40% lower than that of an regular supermarket, and I find my work shift enjoyable (despite havigna full-time job and 2 kids - I still look forward to it every 4 weeks).
-
20 replies without mentioning the silly co-op. I was starting to be impressed, but jhen ruined it. Is 40% lower scientific... or just part of the propaganda they teach you?
-
coop prices are 21% over wholesale. that means their relationship to your grocery store varies. (it's kind of interesting seeing what the met has priced as a loss-leader. seltzer, for instance, is pretty comparable in price either place. and flour tends to be cheaper at met.) feel free to not join. it is already crowded enough.Bumping ancient threads with bot-like bullshit

FAIRWAY = #1. Trader Joe's = #2. After that, you're better off with take-out menus.I blame such comments on beer.

Compare on 5th Ave between 7th and 8th has redone their store and it is MUCH nicer. The produce looks tons better than it used to. I went in there for TP and came out with tons of stuff!
-
I forgot TJs. I love TJs, but I haven't checked out the new location yet.

Take the F to Trader Joe's. It's the best and most affordable.Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

I second the Compare on 5th between 7th and 8th, although I think they changed the name to Smart and Healthy Market- Compare Foods. Either way they are improving and renovating and their prices are sometimes ridiculously cheap. Good beer selection too.

I was wondoring what was going on with that store. Afew weeks ago it was closed and I thought they were out of business but it turns out that they changed the awning and the name and the entrance door. I will have to check it out.The name change seems odd unless what they sell has really changed.. in the past it certainly never seemed like a place to get "healthy" food. -
I only go into Compare for things like cleaning supplies....there's always a bad odor in there...have they been able to get rid of that?Peanuts
-
I just discovered the little market on 10th and 7th Avenue. Good supply of specialty products, and most importantly, AMY'S BREADS!!
-
Keyfood at 5th ave, has a parking lot and a good selection of produce, specialty cheeses etc. Roomy! Friendly cashiers. The 7th ave one is now clean and also has a good selection. No parking lot and not as roomy. Friendly cashiers optional. C-Town is also good with a nice selection of produce etc. and friendly cashiers. No lot. Pathmark behind Lowe's is down right scary. Costco is great for meat, poultry and bulky things of course.

"Peanuts" » I only go into Compare for things like cleaning supplies....there's always a bad odor in there...have they been able to get rid of that?
Yeah, it's almost like it's becoming a real grocery store and not an enlarged bodega. -

Yeah, it's almost like it's becoming a real grocery store and not an enlarged bodega.[/quote] I live around the corner from the Compare and I looooove it for canned goods and frozen stuff. I don't know if I'm ready to get produce or meat there yet, but their canned goods are generally way cheaper than C-town. And the stink seems to be gone!whoa hey whoa hey whoa -

I agree. I can't believe those Key Food cashiers on 5th keep their jobs the way I see them mouth off at paying customers weekend after weekend. One day I saw one cashier screaming at a woman, who could not speak english, about her food stamps debit card until the woman ran sobbing and humiliated from the store. How long are the managers over there going to operate under the assumption that people are willing to pay to have their food thrown at them by a hostile checkout person who refuses to make eye contact or speak when spoken to and then talks smack about me to another cashier in front of me as I am hastily bagging my own food while the next customer's food is being chucked at me? Avoid the 5th Ave Key Food. No one needs to be near that kind of negativity. -
I need to start a car pool to Fairway, Costco and/or Trader Joe's!Babies aren't meat! They're not even people!
-
1. Fairway 2. Fairway 3. Fairway It's seriously the greatest grocery store I've ever been to in the US. You can take the B77 bus there from 9th st, then a car home costs around $8 or they will delivery your groceries for free & you could take the bus back.

I can't imagine Dellio and the other managers would put up with that-now, 7th Avenue Key Food is another story! -
The surprising thing is that everyone else working there seems to be very pleasant. The guys stocking the shelves, the deli people, the managers are all courteous and take the initiative to be helpful. Those checkout girls are evil. They all act so put-upon, like they each live life with a giant chip on their shoulder.

Fairway is a neat store. I shop there sometimes and I really like it. But if you want the ultimate grocery store, you have to get to a Wegman's. They have them in Ithaca, Rochester, and several other upstate cities, as well as in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Walking into one of their stores, I always feel like the Robin Williams character in Moscow on the Hudson, the Russian immigrant who is seeing an American supermarket for the first time. It's like going to heaven! -
I'm at the Key Food on 5th once a week and I've never seen anyone treated like that. Hint, I always go for the oldest person, while slow no attitude. Union Market and the disgusting Pathmark is another story. Surly at Union ,rude and nasty at Pathmark. The Pathmark chick just stood there and stopped bagging. I was unloading and didn't know I had to remove my packages from the stupid spinning wheel. My GF was behind me and told me. The cashier never said a word.
