Beware: A sicko is stealing bicycle seats.

    1. I live on 6th ave and 1st street and I just happen to chain my bike along with my two daughter's bikes on a girthy lamp post on the the same corner. This morning I woke up the little ones and I told them to get their helmets because we were going for a water front bike ride. You can not imagine the disgust and anger I felt when we all got to our bicycles and found that our seats were taken. ALL THREE! Who in their right mind steals seats? My seat was a pricey Gel seat that I paid $100 dollars for but my daughter's bikes were both Dora the Explorer bike seats. There was no value in those seats. Damn the thief who took them and damn this neighborhood. I should have known better when the shady real estate agent only showed me the neighborhood on Sunday's.

Thats funny you mention that Vince. About two weeks ago in that vicinity, I was in one of the local establishments enjoying my cucumber, beet and apple smoothie. Upon returning to my bicycle that I had chained up outside, someone removed the spokes from one of my tires! I think there is a serial bike part thief roaming through park slope.

    3. I have no doubt hat there is some sort of thief targeting the residents of this neighborhood. I tried to report the theft to the local flat feet but I was met with disdain and reluctance. The fat officer at the desk actually laughed when i described the Dora the Explorer seat that was once affixed to my daughter's bicycle. My daughter was shocked as he laughed up a storm and showed little if no empathy for the trauma that has befallen my family. These flat feet are useless and I know now what I must do.

Those cops are the worse. One of my neighbors use to throw bread crumbs on my property so that it would be littered with pigeon droppings. I went to the police and they basically laughed me off and told me to call 311! I don't know what you think you can do Vince.

People steal all kinds of things. I have had old used garbage cans stolen from in front of my house.

Years back, when 5th Avenue was a drug dealer's paradise, people smashed the windows of our Honda Accord and stole our daughters' carseats (not to mention the radio/cassette player).

I am very sorry for your recent experience. It is the price of living in a world where there are some crazy people, and where there are huge differences in income from one person to the next.

If you go to the ps 321 schoolyard today, you may well see your bike seats on sale. If so, call the cops, and have them arrest the vendor for dealing in stolen goods.

    6. I am done with the local authorities. It is time to take matters into our own hands. i propose that we form a Tenant patrol of sorts like the Hasidim of Crown Heights have done. We should form a civilian watch group that will keep an eye on our property. In the Year and a half that I have lived here I have seen things go down hill. My wife was mugged 5weeks ago and a tooth was knocked out. WHAT DID THE POLICE DO? NOTHING! My daughter was a victim of a pedophile stalker a few months back and what did the police do? NOTHING! They are useless civil servants intent on just living off the government pensions that we as citizens pay for. It is high time we fight back and protect ourselves. I for one am going out tonight to find my bicycle seats. Heaven help the individual who is sitting on my squishy gel seat with lower lumbar support.

I am sorry about your bike seats. I know many in the neighborhood have this idea of a friendly, intelligent, wonderful...utopian.... community in Park Slope. In reality you must remember that it is still NYC. If you want to keep something, do not leave it out overnight... even if it is chained. Bikes should be put away in your home... if you want to keep them intact.
Your wife was mugged and your daughter was a victim of a pedophile stalker? Your family is having a very hard time in the hood.... if possible maybe it is time to relocate.....

    9. RELOCATE? Sorry that is not an option. My father purchased this apartment for us as a wedding gift. Yes this is a not Vermont but I refuse to believe that I am not able to feel comfortable enough to chain my bicycles in front of my home. I come from a stern upbringing and therefore I will not run away just because things are not as sweet here as they are in Vermont. This is my home now and if the rowdy people of this neighborhood can not understand that then it is time for them to move out. I am taking a stand and starting tonight I will donate 2 hours of my time to protect our neighborhood but being vigilant. At 1am I shall sit on my stoop and just watch the streets. I owe it to my family and I owe it to my community. Maybe people will join me and together we can secure our little stretch of utopia.

I like what you are saying! I am planning to join my local community board and see if I can do something for the quality of life in my neighborhood

a teaspoon of kisses and a drop of glee
    11. I just got back from my tour of vigilance and let me tell you it was productive. Within the first hour I shooed away a bum who appeared to be licking the door handles of cars. HOW DISGUSTING! The sick degenerates of this neighborhood never cease to amaze me. I also used my gaze to scare away a group of project development scoundrels who appeared to be up to no good. I just sat on my stoop and stared in their general direction. After 15 minutes of staring at them they left for greener pastures. I denied them any victims in my stretch of Shangri-La. During the last hour of my urban tour of duty I stopped the local bum from poking holes in the garbage bags in order to look for his bounty of bottles and cans. And for the main course I chased away a couple eager to use our basement alcove as a love making boom boom room. It was hilarious that they did not notice me sitting there motionless so I allowed them to get to third base before I alerted them with a loud AHEMMMMMMM!.....GOOD RIDDANCE! My first night out and i stopped some many crimes....PLEASE I NEED PEOPLE TO HELP! Imagine what we can accomplish if the community worked together.

If you leave your bikes locked up on the street overnight, don't be surprised when some dirtbag steals parts. That's the sad reality of life in NYC, and it's been this way as long as I can remember. With the economy in the toilet, (thanks, Wall Street crooks!) we shouldn't expect quality of life improvements any time soon. In the meantime, have fun playing Batman, but be careful.

I don't see the joke in this. I was a victim of bicycle crime just over 2 weeks ago. There IS a serial bike part thief. I think Vince has hit on something here. As a community I think we should rally around him. I have lost all faith in the local authorities. As a community we need to gel together and it's time we take matters into our own hands.

      Hello neighbor,
I am here to support all your endeavors in the matter involving a neighborhood watch. I unlike others am not full of fluff. I believe in causes that are for the greater good and that is why I am behind you 1000%. Unlike "Carmen" I do not see your cause as ridiculous and you should be applauded for having the brass gonads to do what you are doing. Let me know when you will be conducting your next neighborhood watch so I can join. It is high time we man the watch towers all along the frontier and keep the sub humans out of our property.

      A little history on myself:
The name is Clarence and i have been a resident of Park Slope for 2 years now and in that small fraction of time my home has been burgled twice and my prices possession of an expensive bamboo made bicycle was stolen from my foyer. I too have been wrong and I want peace of mind especially when the pigs(police) do not care to protect us.

If you lead us, they will come.

Carmen.... I also think this has to be a joke... It is the stereotype of the trust fund baby comes to Brooklyn-- because it is sooooo cool--- but then are upset that city life is so not "Vermont"!!
Daddy bought you an apt on 6th and 1st as a wedding gift?????? It was a long time ago but, I remember being thrilled that I got a kitchen table and 4 chairs from my mom and dad!!!!
If the post is a joke--- LOL----if not --WOW!!! As Danny stated, if the economy doesn't get better soon----- things could get worse--- even with Vince on patrol (I'm sure he has plenty of time--- between playdates with the kids and depositing daddy's monthly check in the bank)
Sorry in advance--- that was not nice----- but I'm still posting it!!!

"trauma that has befallen my family"?
      "tour of vigilance"?
      "urban tour of duty"?

I really hope this is a joke. I know you Park Slope parents are often (and sometimes unfairly) labeled as over-protective, but sensationalist bullshit like this has got to go.

      Here's what happened:
      1. You moved to NYC
      2. You left 3 bikes unattended, outside
      3. You were surprised when your shit got stolen?

There's a reason people chain down the benches and chairs in their front lawns--anything and everything is a target. Instead of spending hours walking around the neighborhood and whining about it in an online forum, you could have just taken 2 minutes to move your bikes inside, or 5 minutes removing the seats.

I truly do not know what you're hoping to accomplish here, but there's no greater substitute than street smarts and common sense.

      Dummy.

Amazing how some New Yorkers seem intent on eating their own. This poster shares his tribulations with us and comes up with a great plan to change his environment and a collective few join to crap on his parade. Why attack one of our own? I do not care if he is a silver spoon birther. I do not care if he was foolish to trust the people around him. All i care is that he learned a valuable lesson and now is trying to change himself and the environment around him for the greater good of society.

Mr. Vince, allow me to apologize on their behalf and do not let a few rotten apples dissuade you from your most valiant agenda. If and when you are going to form a community night watch please feel free to inform the rest if us who are not intent on treating neighbors like Soylent Green.

    19. I sincerely expected more from my Park Slope neighbors. Never in a 100 years could I imagine that one of my very own would sully my good name and reputation. Yes, I am from Vermont originally and yes, my in-laws gifted us an apartment in Park Slope. Does this make me a cliche villain of sorts. the same can be said of my detractors who sully the good name of their neighbors for no apparent reason except o cause pain and displeasure. Is this not the ultimate NEW YORKER cliche? If anything I find it quite amusing that teh detractors of my posting continue to blame me instead of the true culprits. Why spend so much time on blaming me? Is it easier to blame a supposed interloper to Park Slope instead of blaming the true culprit who is probably a Park Slope resident? Yes, yes let us attack the ultra yuppie for his stupidity. Do you not see how ridiculous and childish some of you are acting? Here I stand shedding my heart and looking for support and all some of you can do is act like mongrel siblings. What I am asking is for all of us to put our differences aside and to unite for once to form a watch group. We should pool our resources for the greater good instead of living the true life style of a New Yorker which is "ITS ALL ABOUT ME". Put your selfish hateful attitudes aside and do something that is right for a change. This is the first step for our community so which is it for you? Will you step forward or will you trip and fall?

P.S ToxicLatte & Happy Sloper, thank you for the kind words. At least some residents of Park Slope are getting the point.

ToxicLatte--- thanks, but no thanks, for the apology on my behalf......
I stand by what I posted.... this guy is either a joke or has some serious issues. I'm sure the wifey (poor thing) is happy that Vinny-bots is out all night on the stoop.... that way she doesn't have to deal with him inside the "gift" apartment!!

    21. Instead of being "GREEN" via the ecological aspect of worldly things you choose to embrace the foulest aspect of humanity. "Envy" is your sin and I pity you for acting in such a manner. When and if you get beyond this self loathing attribute please understand that you will always be welcomed in the (forming) Park Slope Watch Group.

Vince, please ignore the village idiots. If you are truly serious about this Night Watch group than private message me with the details.

      Thank you and good luck.

Its not his vigilante-style justice that makes me feel that this is a hoax...its wording like

" The sick degenerates of this neighborhood never cease to amaze me. I also used my gaze to scare away a group of project development scoundrels who appeared to be up to no good.. I denied them any victims in my stretch of Shangri-La. During the last hour of my urban tour of duty I stopped the local bum from poking holes in the garbage bags in order to look for his bounty of bottles and cans. It was hilarious that they did not notice me sitting there motionless so I allowed them to get to third base before I alerted them with a loud AHEMMMMMMM!"

So basically he's disgusted with a homeless dude can collecting, some kids hanging out on his block and a couple making out...? Does his wording strike anyone else as a tad over-the-top?

Maybe I should just take my own often-sited advice and not feed the trolls...
