It's a freaking strip mall chain.

That name would have been really funny in 1979.

it's not even a really good strip mall chain...esp considering if you want a burger chain, Five Guys is just a few blocks away. this is the best they could do with that space?

Well.. I like to feel I would give a new business a chance.. but in this case.. NOPE!

I did do my stint in the suburbs so I guess I have no tolerance for "chains" or eating places that belong on Route 9 in N.J. The Boss did sell his place in Rumson, right?

Just a waste of a prime corner on 7th Ave.. Just disappointed.

I have mixed feelings. I am thinking of the gravel parking lot that used to be next-door to Methodist Hospital.

OMG they are gonna build a Barns and Nobel and a Rite Aid, it's gonna ruin Park Slope. Well it might have, but we buy books, and deodorant there, we also see our doctors there.

That spot probably has a high rent and needs someone with big pockets to pay it. I am glad it is not a Burger King

I think it's just a strange location for this type of establishment. That corner seems very residential for a burger chain.

      Are their burgers even good?

Aside from the SNL sketch that the name is referencing, I have no idea about this place. The fact that it's a chain is meaningless, in fact Five Guys as a chain has about 10 times as many locations as Cheeburger. The proof will be in the eating, so to speak. On Yelp, the location in Queens has the same rating 3 1/2 stars as the Five Guys on 7th. Their website gives me a Johnny Rocket's vibe, but I'll try it at least once.

Disparaging a place just because it's part of a chain is a knee-jerk reaction. Purity diner is a chain. So is La Bagel Delight and Ozzies, etc. I'm sure a Chipotle would be much better than the Happy Fresh Tortilla place. Success is not evil, and there a still far more mom and pop joints here than chains.

But why another burger joint? What is this, Wisconsin? Is there such a demand for burgers here that we need Flipsters, Five Guys and now this, all within 6 blocks of each other? Not to mention at least two diners in that area that have burgers too.

I think we're making the distinction between

      (A) national chains that offer a "dining experience" first, and food second; and don't really seem to fit organically on 7th Ave., and

      (B) chains like Ozzies that are successful because NY people like their product; that fit well into the neighborhood; and more often, tend to be local or regional chains, rather than national chains.

At least that's where my knee is jerking.

Nothing wrong with disparaging a place just because it's part of a chain if the chain sucks. From what I hear, Cheeburger, Cheeburger sucks.

What is really a bummer about this development is that it seems like the nail in the coffin for Park Slope as a place where exciting new restaurants open. Williamsburg is the new restaurant Mecca (and maybe it has been for a long time, but I had been holding out some hope). It seems like the only restaurants that open in Park Slope are mediocre Mexican, bagel shops, pizza parlors, and fast food hamburger joints. Sad.

I'm not sure about right or wrong, but it's still a knee jerk reaction to disparage a place you've never tried. You're entitled to do so, but what good does it do you? You never know, you could end up liking it.

And how does one know the bad chains from the good? Isn't Five Guys a national chain? What makes it good? I had a burger there once and it was very bland.

I'm not terribly thrilled by chains myself, locally owned businesses give the neighborhood a lot of its soul. But not all chain stores suck, and they can have their place in the neighborhood.

I think what really matters is what the business sells or provides, not how big the operation is. Do we really need another burger joint - chain or no chain?

BTW - is this related to that older thread where someone was asking suggestions about what to open on 7th ave? Is this what he opened?

Well I for one am looking forward to the 378,000 combinations of milkshakes and a grilled feta and peanut butter sandwich.

Seriously though, I am really starting to get overwhelmed by all the chains surrounding my apartment and then the few independent places opening up being so mediocre that you can almost predict just when they'll shutter.

I have to say, I don't know much about Cheeburger aside from their horrid name, terribly aesthetics, and propensity to show up in places I associate with crushing despair and worse food (strip malls, real malls, airport food courts).

I looked at their menu online and it doesn't seem THAT different from Five Guys: build your own burger, "natural" beef. Unlike Five Guys, they have veggie burgers, which scores some points in my book.

At the end of the day, I'm too much of a design snob to probably patronize a place with such an idiotic name. Plus, I just don't see 7th Ave as being the place for a place like this... it's just wrong on some level. 9th Street, perhaps. Flatbush, sure.

It is a disappointment to see that place on that corner. Maybe it's worse because that's the intersection where the Smoke Shop from the movie Smoke was supposed to be - that's where Harvey Keitel's character took a photo every morning.

And what happened to the healthiness of this neighborhood? Why so much junk food now? I feel like there used to more healthy places that are gone, but can only think of Second Helpings. We'll see if our neighborhood patronizes the place enough to keep it alive.

methinks that the "healthiness of this neighborhood" will be defined by the choices that we as consumers make. with no demand, the supply will disappear.

that being said, i'm not sure how we invite healthier options in... other than to make sure we support those which already exist. success breeds imitation. if hamburger joints continue to open, that reveals more about consumption than anything else.

that being said, i like a tasty hamburger. if this place can provide one, i will eat it. if it cannot, i won't. but no part of my decision will be based on whether it is a chain; chain restaurants began as somebody's baby too. i don't begrudge them for their success.

Whether a business survives in that part of Park Slope is not necessarily a reflection of the demand of Park Slope residents.

The hospital is like a local industry, and with all of its employees and patients and visitors, it has a huge impact on the businesses near it.

I bet if every Park Slope resident boycotted 5 Guys, it would still do fine with just from hospital related business. For some reason they all seem to crave burgers.

no doubt that the hospital folks frequent five guys... but i really doubt it could survive on that business alone.

but isn't it fun to see doctors and nurses chowing down on large fries and a burger at five guys! it makes me feel not so guilty about it.

Ok. I confess... When i go upstate (way upstate!) to visit family in Rochester, I very much enjoy the occasional visit to Red Lobster. Call it a guilty pleasure... i don't care... The food is cheap and plentiful and often fried... Yum!

if that place turned into a big giant Chick-Fil-A the franchisee could retire in 6 months. People would travel from around the 5 boroughs to go there. FACT.

If I had enough money I would open one up here in NYC. It would be a GOLDMINE.

Actually, a seafood place (other than another sushi place) would be great.

As for the hospital I bet it could support 5 Guys easily. The hospital is a huge industry for this neighborhood. I'm talking about all the satellite hospital offices, physical therapists, etc. The hospital also feeds the local car service businesses - you can always see about 5 cars waiting outside the hospital. The economic effect of the hospital on this area is huge. It must be the single largest employer in Park Slope.

Doctors may know better than to be unhealthy, but I think they're too busy and stressed to do so. I often see them eating burgers or pizza and smoking too.

ha, i know! last time i was over at five guys i saw a nurse put her cigarette out as she came through the door. she ordered a burger and fries and a very large drink and walked out the door with the grease already turning the take-out bag clear. and she lit up another smoke as she crossed the street!

And Five Guys is unhealthy even for a burger joint. Their cheeseburger has almost twice as much fat as a Big Mac.

5 guys Large fries = 1474 calories! That's an entire days' worth of calories for some people.

It's amazing they can get so specific - NOT 1470... NOT 1475... 1474.

And 71 grams of fat! Come to think of it, I had it backwards. I think Five Guys is keeping the hospital in business.

I don't understand the love for Chik-Fil-A. Disgusting factory-farmed chicken plus anti-gay attitudes to boot!

It is a shame that such a bland burger joint would go in that terrific space. Especially when there's an equally bland burger joint six blocks away on 9th. Cheeburger (such a stupid name, I feel bad about myself typing it) does have malts which are hard to find in PS.

I don't mind a Five Guys...their footprint is relatively small and innocuous. But Cheeburger is taking up a space that had so much potential.

Piano...If it was a bar opening up on each corner I would understand your Wisconsin comment. Otherwise, being a former Sconnie, I don't get it.

I worked for chickfila for 6 years in highschool and college. They gave me $4000 for college, paid me $14 an hour to manage shifts at the age of 16 and were closed sundays. We had at least 4 openly gay males on staff (that I remember. There may have been more.) The food is of grocery store quality (non-organic, but the chicken breasts used in the sandwiches were better than most of what I buy at C-town.)

      There's reason for the love.

I live very close to this location and was hoping for something more. Personally, I kind of liked the old Mexican restaurant that was there. They had a good burger & beer special on Sunday nights. It had a nice ambiance, friendly enough staff. It wasn't a bad option.

Cheeseburger Cheeseburger, on the other hand, just makes me think "oh well". It's not for me. Fast food just seems unfortunate (not to mention the feeling of bleeding from the inside). I tried Five Guys once and was depressed by the whole experience. Standing in line, realizing that 2 out of every 3 people in the place were obese (you are what you eat), and then getting the food and finding it terribly bland isn't the best way to win ones affection.

Something different would have been nice, but such is life. Another reason to cook at home.

Would love the neighborhoods opinion ( before I spend my life savings). I have an opportunity to open a casual Greek restaurant ( take out, delivery, small sitdown space) on 7th Ave. The concept I have would be an elevated version of your typical " souvlaki" joint. I plan on using all natural meats, organic produce in a cool, comfortable space. Would love some feedback.

I can't imagine being disappointed by the food at five guys. i would eat there for literally every meal if i could.

but yes, i am in good shape, so i avoid it. beware though, just because a place is a chain restaurant doesn't mean that it is more unhealthy that something original. i have eaten pretty deadly food at mom and pop places too. americans are fat because of all of our food choices, not just places like five guys.

2 out of 3 people around me at v spot the other day were fat too.

i had a burger at cheeburger cheeburger in T5 at JFK about a week and a half ago. it was awful. the meat was hard, luke-warm and relatively tasteless, and the toppings were a mess and included a cold piece of cheese. i ate a few bites of the burger and then tossed it and got a slice of pizza. i know this was the airport version, but it was just strikingly bad.
