I can't believe there's no thread on this yet.
Where are you getting christmas trees? I've usually gotten a smallish cheap one in past years, but this year I'm kind of hoping to get one that will keep its needles more than 2 weeks and might be willing to pay more than $30 : ) I'd love to be able to carry it home in my arms on in a granny cart, but I can find a way if the good trees are farther. Rec's?
All I know is that the french-canadian woman by the key food on 5th ave. was really rude to my girlfriend when we went there for ours last year so we'll be going elsewhere this year.
I simply cannot believe that you all arent going green and using a fake tree that is recycled every year!! what kind of hipsters are you all anyway?
Lowes had a great selection, and very cheap prices last year... i'm sure they're doing it again (haven't stopped by there in a few weeks though)
The past few years we went to a guy in Windsor Terrace...I think he was on 14th Street just east of Prospect Park West. He drives down from Vermont, he's very friendly, and the trees are really nice and reasonably priced (comparatively).
For the last 5 years or so, we've got our tree from the guys on Flatbush and Dean. Their prices have always seemed better than those closer to GAP (like the ones outside of Duane Reade or Natural Land) and we've never had problems with needles dropping prematurely. I think that most of the sellers get their trees from the same places, though, so maybe the needle thing is care related.
The trees at CVS on 9th Street are always outrageously priced. We went to Home Depot last year and got an inexpensive tree that held up great.

There is some sort of potion (small bottle about $1.50) that they sell there to mix in with the water to extend the freshness. We used it last year for the first time and the tree lasted a full month. Some needle shedding but amazing how little.

Large selection, a really friendly and helpful sales assistant, and much better prices than the crusty quebequois street-sleepers.

I looked at the trees at the GAP market today (based on rec's here or on brownstoner) and was disappointed. A 6 footer was about $100 and the ones I looked at were shedding like crazy already. The one on 8th Ave and 8th St seem slighly fresher and are $20-40 cheaper AND they said they deliver. So if you want it delivered, check out the 8th Ave guys by the pet shop.
I just went to the woman outside Key Food (Nancy is her name) and she was nothing except wonderful. When she sliced off the bottom of my tree she held up the sliver and smelled it and said "I'll never get tired of that smell."
I think she's great and she has the best prices in the Slope. My seven foot balsam was $50. The CVS guy would have doubled that, the guy near Bagel Delight wanted $10 a foot, and the Boy Scouts near the Old Stone House wanted $80 for a smaller tree.
I don't find her rude at all. I think she's great. It's weird other people have a problem with her.
I love the Vermont folks outside the Coop on Union Street. They're super nice, and the trees are fresh. And they get the long needle kind I like.
i second the reco for the guys on 8th & 8th. we bought a 6'6" fraser fur for $55. it's a beaut. they do offer free delivery, and the guy selling the trees is a character.
Here's for the Vermonters at the Coop. We got a 10 foot tree yesterday for $115. 9th Street wanted $200, and 8th and 8th was more as well. Tree was cut within the last week.
Our results:
Bought a big Douglass at 8th and 8th and had it delivered (free). They got here later than they said, but based on how busy they were when I was there, I had planned for that possibility. They brought the tree in and without us even asking started to mount it in our stand. Sadly the tree trunk was way too big for our old stand but they had stands to sell on the truck and we just bought one of those (probably overpriced but saved us a trip). They set it up and went on their way. Very friendly, good service. The tree has dropped a normal about of needles for a new Douglass, imo. It smells wonderful!
Got a smaller tree a couple of days ago at the 9th St spot outside CVS. Just one of those tiny Fraser firs. It's hardly dropped a needle so far. Girl working wasn't particularly pleasant but we got what we needed and I love the tree.
