What is so great about this restaurant that there is a line to get in? I went there last night and I must say that I was very disappointed. I had red snapper which was good but it only came with 3 thin slices of potato. For $23 they couldn't give me a whole potato and maybe some vegetables?

I was hungry when I left. We also split an appetizer for 2 among the 3 of us and that seemed to get the waiter upset. He made some remark in regard to us splitting a main course among the 3 of us as well. A definate put down. His superior air was very annoying. He could not wait for us to order. He came to our table every 3 minutes to see if we were ready and was in a huge rush to clear our plates away. He even cleared away 2 plates while the third person was still eating. I would never go back to this restaurant and I feel like I was in a tourist trap after going there.

Wow. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Having been coming to Convivium since they opened, I can't imagine that you were rushed. While the restaurant is one of my all time favorites, I've never found the service to be anything but European (i.e., relaxed). Moreover, I also find it surprising (note: I'm not doubting you) that your server made a comment about how you ordered. I've been known to share everything - appetizers, entrees, deserts, with my dinner companion and have never had anything remotely snide being said. I suggest giving it another try...

two of my experiences at convivium were awesome, one was average (i.e. the waiter was very "new york" - bored with my group and not trying to be unbored. at all.)

but I have to say that the food was amazing. I had a rabbit special once that has not been matched by any restaurant, even babbo, in awesomeness. convivium is one of my favorite spots in PS and I just wish they accepted visa or MC. their AMEX or cash only policy is baffling.

I've eaten there at least 3 times. I loved it the first time. Didn't love it so much the second time. And it was fine the 3rd. The first time I went with a friend and we ordered just off the appetizer menu. We shared the artichoke, short rib, and something else. They didn't hassle us at all about sharing. We did also order quite a bit of wine -- maybe that helps. The second time I went just to have the artichoke appetizer again... but was diappointed. It was overcooked. I can't recall anything outstandingly bad or good about the 3rd time. I'm pretty sensitive to bad service, and didn't have any trouble with their service at all.

The place I want to know what the big deal over is that Italian place on the corner: Pepperoncino. What's so great about that place that their tables are all always filled? I had a bad experiences there when they first opened (undercooked pasta and they hadn't installed the weather door). I've had pizza there that was OK. Is there something on the menu that I should be ordering?

I love Convivium and have introduced many friends to this restaurant. The food is gorgeous and the service is European (slow, couteous, honest and warm). The steak for 2 is something we often order... it will srve 4 people if you order a salad or some apps before.. They seem just fine with sharing orders and will even plate a single serving for two people if you say you are sharing..

The atmosphere is beyond belief.. Hard to belive you are on 5th ave after you walk in and sit down..

I love Convivium, but I think service in Europe sucks.

I've always found Convivium to be an excellent experience...nice place to take out-of-towners because the interior is such a wonderful surprise.

One summer I had an office party for about twenty five in Convivium's courtyard. They did a great job; it felt like we were dining on some family patio in Europe.

      Subject: Great ambience & food!

My girl & I were there for Valentine. Great ambience & food! What I noticed about the service was that they were all male waiters and perhaps even short-staffed, at least where we were sitting. Nevetheless, they were all courteous and efficient. However I can see how their Latin mannerism can be preceived bit blunt or rude. I am planning to go back for their regular menu though.

Hey if you had a nice experience on Valentines Day I could see that alone as being a recommendation for an eatery. It is one of the worst nites to dine out. I think you will really enjoy the restaurant on a non holiday meal.

I have to say up until the last time I went to Convivium it was my favorite place in the slope. However, last time I went, it seemed that everything was just super saturated with oil (high quality olive oil, but still). I would go back, but not for a while. As for the service, I LOVE the european feel of it. So much so that my ex accused me of having crushes on every waiter in there. I must admit, they are quite attentive . In general I think this is one of the highest quality restaurants we have here in the slope, and I encourage everyone to try it.

I think if you going to trash a place - which is fine - you should at least be required to explain a little bit.
