      Subject: D'Agostinos 7th Ave

This bit of news comes off the parkslopeparents listserv.

Word from the employees at D'Ag (a big supermarket on 7th Ave and 6th

Street) is that the company is closing the location on April 28.

Does anybody know what is planned for that giant space, or how we can

find out? (Anyone wanna go in for a giant playspace? A new preschool?)

Or where else to get a whole store-cooked Murray's organic chicken for

      4.99 (with points)?
    2. I normally don't wish bad things upon local businesses (The D'Ag) is a local NY institution. But man, did this supermarket SUCK. High prices. Unfriendly staff. Crappy produce. I'm much happier shopping at Steve's C-Town - better produce & prices. While I don't wish The D'Ag closed, they're closing because they never tried to keep up with the changing tastes of the 'hood.

yeah, Joe's would be awesome. i DO hope that another market opens in that space at any rate. i used to live right near there on 7th & 7th, and there were plenty of local seniors who shopped at D'ags for staples like bread, milk, veg, etc. i'd hate to think they have to walk the distance to C-Town. i know it's not far for us younger folks, but for some it's a big deal.

I just did all of my TJ's shopping near my mom's house this weekend (city one is too crowded and can't keep stock on the shelves). I think it would be a faboo addition to the 'hood.

no connections, but if you go to their website:

      http://www.traderjoes.com/location_requests_form.aspx

you can make your suggestion -- i just did! this is what i wrote:

"i live in park slope, brooklyn. the latest word on the street is that the D'agostinos on 7th avenue is closing its doors at the end of the month. this locale would be perfect for a Trader Joe's. plus, there is a bus stop directly in front of the building and a subway stop just a few blocks away. please consider it!!!"

thanks for the link. just posted mine...

I reside in Park Slope, Brooklyn and have just recently heard of a D'agostino grocery store closing up shop at its 7th Avenue/6th Street location on April 28th. The neighborhood is known for it's eco-friendly attitudes, home of the Park Slope Food Co-op as well as a wealth of people who consider eating healthy and organic of great value. This vacating space and an addition of a Trader Joe's is one that, in my opinion would serve our neighborhood as well as your company quite well. I have no doubt in my mind that an outpost in this location would do superbly well. Besides the Co-op there are few places to shop for high quality and reasonably priced groceries in the neighborhood, despite the demand from neighbors.

I encourage you to look into this space or another in the Park Slope community.

The space will be split in half to house a cell phone joint and a realtor.

      THANK THE LORD!!!!11!

At last, some help for our poor underserved neighborhood! How many times have I traipsed up 7th and down 5th for hours, looking, looking, looking for even a single realtor or one measly cell-phone vendor? Why has the Slope been without these amenities for so very long?

Now, if only my prayers could be answered, and someone could split D'Ag into thirds, so the third storefront could be occupied by a cunning boutique selling ironic newborn-sized onesies for $45! I want one that says "RAMONES"!!

      I'll write a note to TJ's too.

If there are any responses from them, please post 'em here.

I have to admit I shopped at D'Ags when I lived on 3rd and 6th Ave, I didn't mind it, it was convenient.

In other news, I see that the Russian Ugly Furniture Store (I think it's actually called the Bear's Den or something) on 5th Ave btw 12th and 13th is clearing out ...

I live close to the Bear Den and since I am on the Avenue almost daily I have seen some really intruging stuff outside the shop and bought things from time to time. I can't say I will miss this business when it shuts down. Please... no shlock clothing stores that cater to jhs 51 students with underdeveloped bossoms!

I know Markowitz is bending over backwards to get Trader Joe's into Brooklyn - no one has made any official announcements, but I think they are coming. That D'Ag spot is too small for a TJ store though.

Wrong. It will be divided into three units for cell phone and real estate companies and a bank.

I always wondered if the Bear's Den was a mob front but I have to admit too that I bought a few things there after I had to downsize into my current place around the corner ... a little round table and chairs to fit into my bijoux kitchen; a bookcase; a nightstand that I use for a record player stand to store my old 78's in. Oh and a totally kitsch inflated ottoman with plastic flowers inside.

As for the shlocky clothing stores, I have to admit to buying cheap t-shirts and the like at those places. I'm 49, but I'm still a 32A.

I love Payless! You wouldn't believe the compliments I've gotten on stupid shoes I've bought there. And I'm like ha ha, they were twelve bucks.

Awesome! I hope they rent a few more huge high-rent spaces, so they can jack up my banking fees even more.

What do people do at banks all day? The last time I went to my bank was three years ago, when I was signing my mortgage papers. I must be a freak...

      They had to do it.

A bank across the street from a hospital.

Might as well just rig a pneumatic tube between the two for real-time [and real-cash] money transfers.

I wonder that too. And why does a bank have to be so big? I don't get it.

As much as I love me some Trader Joe's (and, believe me, I love em... just spent a bundle at the branch in Amherst MA this past weekend), I would be surprised, no, _shocked_ if they opened a branch on 7th Ave. It's just not their bag... they'd be far too much of a destination to go into a Brooklyn location w/o parking. At any rate, I'd encourage them to take over the sh*thole Key Food on 7th, if only bc it's closer to me!

Another bank? Geeze...if they wanted to really piss us off they should just open an Olive Garden.

Wait just a cotton pickin' minute here...she doesn't wear onesies anymore, but there's nothing ironic in my kid's enjoyment of the Ramones.

Anyhow. Guess I'd better use up my gr33npoints pretty soon if D'agostino's is really leaving.

I'd heard a rumor about Trader Joe's opening a location in Bklyn; during a visit to the 14th St TJ's last week, I asked the cashier if this was true, and she whispered "they're in negotiations."

That TJ rumor has been around a long time. I'd heard it rumored for Red Hook (before the IKEA project was finalized) and also for the brownfield at 3rd and 3rd where Whole Foods is going to build. Let's hope that someday the TJ rumor turns to fact.

Bad suggestions all - especially the Trader Joe crap.

What this neighborhood needs is a good pet shop - especially now that the Brooklyn Aquarium (9th St) and the one on Union and 4th Ave are gone.

My fish are stressed, and there's no place to get Cycle or Ammo Lock around here anymore - gotta bike over to Petland Discount at 5th and 13th Street! Meanwhile, there's gill bladder infection running rampant...

There's a "Commercial Space Available 4500 sq ft" (or something like that) sign in the window of the space now - did BoA drop out of the deal?

Maybe the $8 billion write-offs in the banking industry will take the steam out of the bank-on-every-block trend?

My son goes to school in Amherst and I find myself stocking up every time I go up there. It's so much easier than trying to get to Union Square!

Wonder about the parking at TJ's at Clinton and Atlantic?
Ok, now I'm crazy. Another goal achieved.
