"Lakeside Center" strikes me as serious overkill. Especially for 75 Million Dollars (cue Dr. Evil finger quotes). At least we're getting an "environmentally friendly" parking lot... so less green space, but at least it's carbon neutral? hmm.

Prospect Park rink redo price tag spins up to $75M

An ambitious redesign of a winter (and summer) wonderland planned for Prospect Park could add $25 million to its cost ...

The expected budget for the project, which calls for replacing Wollman Ice Rink with two new rinks, water features and an off-season roller rink, has shot to $75 million, from $50 million last year.

"It's because we've expanded the whole basis of the project, in the redesigning of it," said Prospect Park Alliance President Tupper Thomas, who said roadwork, new garage space and a parking lot will be included in the environmentally friendly plan ...

... the increasingly expensive Prospect Park project ... would begin construction in 2010 and open by 2011 ...

At the risk of opening up a completely different can of worms... What is up with the garage space and parking lot in the environmentally friendly plan? I thought we were in the business of DIScouraging personal auto use in NYC?

WOAH! $75 million for an ice skating rink? WTF? Way too much. No we don't need this. For $75 million they should be able to freeze the whole lake!

That is a bit of a chin-scratcher. I was wondering what Jotham was thinking there. He kind of drops the "eco-friendly parking lot" concept and never returns to clarify what that means.

As an aside, the "Eco-Everything" trend is just completely beyond any control. I can't imagine things got this hyperbolic even at the height of the 70s energy crisis.

So maybe it's just that these days, you have to attach 'ECO' to your project to get it rolling. I'm sure Atlantic Yards will morph into a Green Building project any minute now.

Nuh uh. I want the roller rink.

There are plenty of municipal pools in the city - maybe there ought to be more, but they aren't tough to find. There are zero roller rinks outside of Staten Island, unless you count the temporary Dreamland in Coney Island. Some parks have a space that can be used for hockey, among other things, but nothing you'd really think of as a roller rink.

Of course, what I'd *really* like to see is an indoor rink, but I'll take an off-season outdoor one in a pinch.

Maybe Christine Quinn and the other Democrat council members could sneak into their 500 million dollar secret stash to fund this.

      Zombie thread awakened

      ...project almost complete.

Nearly five years after architects Tod Williams & Billie Tsien unveiled their designs for Prospect Park’s long neglected Lakeside, the first part of the $74 million project is finally scheduled to open this October, according to Curbed. The 26-acre site along Prospect Park’s lake will honor the original landscaping by Central Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, whose work was lost after a 1960 renovation that added the Wolman skating rink. The iron railings, five acres of shoreline and the original decorative retaining wall will all be returned to their 19th century splendor. The first phase of the project will return five acres back to the lake and add three acres of green space to the park.

Construction, the first at the park in 50 years, had been delayed because of financing issues, as the cost of the project grew by more than $25 million since plans were first laid out. The work is being paid for not by funds from the park’s budget, but by private donations and city and state dollars. The portion of the park opening this fall was funded through a $10M contribution from the Shelby White and the Leon Levy Foundation.

Other New York Landmark Conservancy plans for the park include the restoration of the musician’s rink, known as “Music Island” and the restoration of two rinks: one for ice-skating in the winter and rollerskating in the summer, while the other will become a water playground. I believe just about everything but the ice rink is now open.

The ice rink was supposed to open this fall, but has been delatyed until Fall 2013.

Press on the renovation, picture of politicians: http://observer.com/2012/10/olmsted-revisited-prospect-park-looks-to-its-future-by-restoring-its-past/
