LaVilla: pretty good standard Italian food. Big portions, everything is fresh. Kiku: Lots of vegetarian sushi options, much more than your standard cucumer/avocado rolls. Frannys: Best fancy pizza EVAR Mango: A step above your standard neighborhood Thai restsaurant, much better than Lemongrass.

for upscale...applewood...hands down...excellent food at reasonable prices. in the city, this place would be 2 stars and the prices could be double. their sauteed lobster appetizer, their cheese plate, their meats are all fantastic. service is mixed...its friendly but not always professional. i like the wife and she is good but the other servers are mediocre. but the space is great and cozy. for casual, bonnies...good burgers and wings...casual and a good place to hang out. taro has excellent sushi at cheap prices, and stone park is always quality.

Subject: best restaurants
Rosewater: always fresh ingredients, inventive menu; great wine. Perfect for long lingering dates. THE NEW SANTO PALO!! (Palo Santo?) on Union btw 4th and 5th: GREAT lil plates, fresh herbs and homemade tortillas...cannot wait to go back. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice every morn!!Ask a burning question, get a burning answer. -
So many good ones mentioned, but too many I haven't tried yet. I can't say these are my favorites, but I consistently like them: Press 195 - takes a long time to get the sandwich, but worth it Chip Shop for Mac-n-cheese (small portion) and a salad Number One Garden for fast, cheap and good Chinese food Blue Ribbon delicious, but not in my current (non) budget La Taqueria Nachos, baby, nachos.
-
Here are a couple that are on my short list: Night and Day--I love the jazz, the food and the late hours. Rosewater--the food is almost always excellent. I'm just glad that I didn't walk by the day that they were roasting a pig out front. Animal lover here!femmedada

hands down Convivium Osteria--great service, great food, great ambiance.Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.

Rosewater Blue Ribbon Nana for something cheerful and relatively cheap I've heard great things about Applewoods but not yet been there.Do you know where you're going to
Do you like the things that life is showing you?

I don't know how I let this thread go by without plugging Convivium. Intimate, romantic (especially the cellar seating), excellent service, fantastic food especially the Portuguese-leaning stuff. I could go for a plate of their chicken livers with bacon right now. On the cheap / takeout side, Los Pollitos, no question.

where is convivium and what kind of menu do they have? I feel like I've seen it mentioned in passing 10 times now but have no real picture of it.For The Love Of Paris, Don't Go To The Lounge!

68 5th Avenue near St. Mark's. Signage is very inconspicuous so easy to miss. Menu is Mediterranean with an emphasis on Portuguese and (I think) Spanish influence, as well as Italian. (One of the owners is Portuguese and one Italian.) NY Times review: http://tinyurl.com/ylfzw9 -
I used to really like la taquiera but the service there has become so incompetant that it's not worth my time to go there anymore. Last time I was there I had to tell the guy the counter my order at least ten times--all while he helped everyone BUT me. I finally broke down and asked if he was going to make my burrito or if I should just go somewhere else. Food is not good enough to put up with that crap.

Rachel's on 5th Ave btw 7th and 8th Streets I love their buritos! Hunan Delight on 6th Ave/Union Love their vegie chicken and dried bean curd! These are about the only restaurants I can afford...
-
Al di la - their seasonal raviolis are sumptuous. Hands down the most romantic place to eat if it's snowing. Total bitch getting a table though. La Villa - I know, this place is so 2004. But I still love their free bread basket, organic baby green salad and quite good pizza. My version of comfort food. Blue Ribbon Sushi - great sushi, tempura to die for, and really sweet servers Christie's - deeeeelicious veggie pies and coco bread Hunan Delight - hands down the best Chinese in the Slope. No one does seitan better than this place.

I feel like I've written this recently but... Blue Ribbon is excellent. Stone Park too, and Sette is becoming a favorite. Moutarde, but I haven't been there in a couple years 12th St., because they have the hangar steak, possibly the most popular meal on this board. The Mexican place on 4th and Union and for that matter Los Dos Pollitos on 5th and Baltic maybe? OT, but did anyone notice that Night and Day is becoming a BBQ place? I thought they were doing ok, but I guess not so much. For The Love Of Paris, Don't Go To The Lounge!

True, especially since they don't take reservations (it's on 5th & Carroll, btw), but you can put down your name, go around the corner to their wine bar, and have a nice chat and a good selection, then go to dinner 45 minutes later..."Truth springs from argument amongst friends."

Besides for Amin on 7th Avenue, I have a hard time not LOVING at least one menu option at ALL Park Slope-based restaurants I eat at. It's hard not gaining 50 pounds in this neighborhood! My dream is to sit down at one restaurant and have the waited deliver me my favorite items from several restaurants at once. The hodgepodge would include appetizers from Nana and Nepon, entrees from Blue Ribbon Sushi, some of that smashed red pepper crap they bring out with bread at Aunt Suzie’s, and dessert from Tasti Delight.I blame such comments on beer.

Subject: La Villa?
can someone please explain to me why La Villa is constantly crowded and busy when the quality of the food is on a par with an Olive Garden? I thought Brooklynites were relatively sophisticated foodies in general. The food at this place smacks of crappy Long Island italian--it's awful!! Does anyone know any really good Italian places in Park Slope? Sorry to sound so critical, but I've given it about 5 chances over the past year and a half, and it has greatly disappointed each and every time. AND I had to wait a minimum of 20 minutes to be seated in every single instance. -

La Villa is not great, but it does have a few things going for it. It's kid friendly, spacious, and the pizza is better than most. FWIW I've never had to wait for a table there, but we mostly get take-out. -

However, the chopped liver at 2nd was unmatchable. It was also a much cooler space then Katz's. I hate that ticket thing. I love that when Bill Clinton went there, he basically got... EVERYTHING! And ate it all.
Which reminds me of when Bush the Elder was president. He went to Carnegie Deli when he was in NY and ordered a BALONEY SANDWICH ON WHITE BREAD WITH MAYO! When they interviewed the Carnegie Deli owner afterwards, he said, "What a weenie!" -
Subject: The soup shack!!
The soup shack on NW side of 4th & 11th!! The place is literally a shack....Built out of 2x4's with no sign. It's actually a flower shop, but they have about 10 soups all year long and they're all $3.50 for a pint. Secondly, and this is even more awesome: They have the best tamales and horchata I have ever had. And that's saying something because I am from San Diego. It's owned by a sweet Argentinian guy and there are always a few little kids running around. You'll love it, I swear!! -

I've never eaten at Olive Garden, but the takeout pizza at La Villa is dandy. Their Speciale is just the thing after a long day doing whatever you're doing that makes it impossible to imagine cooking dinner.italianfoodjunkie » Does anyone know any really good Italian places in Park Slope?

I thought I was alone in my feeling that La Villa belongs in a strip mall somewhere. I just have not liked the pizzas I have gotten there at all. Why doesn't someone open a decent pizza joint with reasonably priced pizzas--I know, I know Anthony's but I have found that place up and down and I get the sense they won't be around long. -

No, don't say that! I love Anthony's. Why do you think they won't be around long? I agree about La Villa, gross. I'd rather go to a Pizzeria Uno. I had dinner at Stone Park this weekend and was not impressed. The food was just okay, the service was just okay, the dining room was overly bright, my husband's entree was cold and clearly had been sitting for a while, my creme brulee was cold. And -- I hate to say this since I feel like I'm always defending the children of Park Slope on this board, but there was a young child in clunky shoes or maybe even tap shoes who was continuously running back and forth across the dining room and no one did a damn thing about it.

Yes, this parent (and Stone Park patron) agrees that is not cool.

I really dont know where you anti-La Villa people eat 'regular' italian food (when your talking gross in the genre - Aunt Suzies jumps out to me) ; but in my opinion La Villa is the best around and every time I bring friends or relatives (or order in) they express the same sentiment. Besides the food, the service is friendly and good, the place is immaculate, and it is just noisy enough to make it good for kids but not so noisy as to be unplesant.
