Today, my husband walked past the former Maggie Moo's space on 7th Ave near 2nd street. Signs were up indicating it is being converted into a Dashing Diva franchise (upscale nail salon).

Are more nail salons needed? We need a shoe repair place.

a friend told me about this place before.

      she raved about it.

it sounded like a cut above other typical nail salons.

How good does it get? Are "special" services included?

i may be in the minority here, but I am excited. The few nail salons around are, in my experience, icky, and this will be a definite step up.

More expensive than most places. But its got nice decor, they serve drinks some nights, and its popular for little girls birthday parties, so it makes sense for the neighborhood.

I agree we need a shoe repair place, but how would they ever afford the rents on 7th Ave?

There is also a shoe repair place near the NYSC on 9th and about 5th. Not sure we need another nail salon though. How about a restaurant to replace all those that are closing.

just this week, it's been announced that sotto vocce is opening two new restaurants on 5th, 'snice just opened last week and a new ethiopian place is opening on 4th. also apparently tempo presto is becoming a mexican place and bisquit bbq is in the process of turning over to a new restaurant.

i wish crif dog would open a place on 7th! the one on st. marks in manhattan is so much fun. hot dogs, veggie dogs, a million toppings and a ms. pacman machine.

what else could you ask for?

Where did the open a 'snice? There's one in the west village, around the corner from my temporary lodgings.

Dashing Diva, while "upscale, trendy and expensive" compared to your average NYC nail place, gave me the worst manicure and pedicure I've ever had.

Their "special" pedicures -for which you pay about $70 - consisted of having my feet soaked in green goop (think the slime they used on that Nickelodeon tv show in the 90's) for about 10 minutes, then a very basic, even bare-bones pedicure (no massage or scrub).

Their polish, however, is the absolute worst - I had a simple manicure with a pale pink (I usually use Essie polish) - and it began peeling off less than half an hour after I left the place. By the next morning I had no polish left on my fingers, and almost none on my toes. They insist that you use their "special" line of polish (you can't byob, or so they told me), and it is absolutely awful.

NOT worth the money, no matter how "cute" it may seem.

sotte voce is opening 2 new places?? God, mediocrity spreads like a cancer!

Edited to include this blurb from Brownstoner... Pasta for 3 or 4???? That's what my grandmother who couldn't cook always made

The owners of the 7th Avenue's Sotto Voce are bringing versions of their popular Italian formula to two new locations on 5th Avenue. Within the next month they're going to open a bistro called Aperitivo on the corner of 1st street (shown above left). One of Sotto's managers says Aperitivo is going to be open from early morning to late at night and have classic bistro trappings like a marble bar. A block and a half away, meanwhile, Sotto's owners are opening a much larger "family-style" restaurant called Alta Voce (pictured to the right above). The eatery, on 5th Ave. between 2nd and 3rd streets, will sprawl over two levels and include a backyard garden and a wine cellar. Alta Voce will specialize in dishes like pasta for three or four, according to the Sotto manager, and it's scheduled to be in business in June.
      But that's impossible.

I was a regular customer of the Dashing Diva by NYU a couple of years back. Liked them and the cosmos they served on Fridays after 5pm (not to mention the cute guy who served them). We ladies would chat up after we knocked a few back while sitting at the dryers.

Best story is that one day a stripper type came in with her BF in tow. I was thinking to myself, "wow, they get everybody in here!." When I looked up again, I realized it was ICE T and his wife, Coco!

Later, when he came to pick her up and was sitting on one of the hot pink leather chairs (great visual), I talked to him. He was super nice (and hot) and I would have never had the guts had I not had some alcohol in me.

      But their polish sucks.

      great story...

sounds like it'll do just fine here, despite the crappy polish.

tell us more about the cute guys who serve the cosmos...
