Ginzu on 5th Avenue, between 1st and 2nd - had the most delicious lunch delivered today, so delectable....and the most exquisite food poisoning thereafter. Honestly, I haven't had the guts ripped out of me like this in quite some time.

Food posioning usually occurs 5-8 hours after eating the food. If you got sick immediately after eating, it could have been from breakfast.

If you are certain that Ginzu made you sick, do you know what exactly it was...warm mayo? Just curious.

It wasn't mayo - I had a bento box - and I know it wasn't breakfast because I didn't have any. I'm still recovering today - my workout sucked.

Oh, and the bento box was all cooked food - no raw fish.

Raw is partly right about the incubation period for food poisoning, but it depends on the culprit organism. Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning (typical story involves unrefrigerated mayo) has an onset 2-4 hours after ingestion, and causes mostly vomiting and abdominal cramps. Bacillus cereus, another organism that can cause similar symptoms, is typically associated with fried rice that is made in advance and then stored unrefrigerated. This causes 2 potential syndromes- either vomiting and cramps that begin 1-6 hours after ingestion, like Staph, or a diarrheal illness that begins about 24 hours after. Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter all cause fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, and symptoms start about 24 hours after ingestion. Shigella and Campylobacter typically cause bloody diarrhea.

Diarrhea, CHA CHA CHA! Diarrhea CHA CHA CHA!

Did you perchance have any fried rice in your bento box?

No, no fried rice. Just the steamed kind. Gawrsh, your vivid descriptions sound so appealing! And so...accurate! No vomiting, but painful cramps and an EMPATIC need for Immodium - no food prior to the bento box. Not a hell of a lot of food after that either. (I tend to metabolize real quick, and when food poisoning hits in groups I'm usually the first to go before others know what hit them.)

Shaky on the pins today. Lots of water. Crackers. Ecccchhh....CHA CHA CHA indeed...

ljnd... really hope that by Sat morning you feel a lot better. I think the probability that your illness was associated with the food is strong but every now and again I have had that experience where I get stomach upset and who knows... might have been what I had eaten or might have been a virus coming on. In the second case of the virus I tend to blame the last meal I have eaten and typically avoid "That" restaurant or "that" food. Food poisoning is so common though. I too seem to get sicker than most people when for whatever reason there is a stomach problem. No matter whether explanation is virus or food poisoning I bet you won't be eating food from there any time soon!! Anyway.. just be sympathetic and hoping by morning you can wake up feeling better and just have a great day.

Is this the place that's copying Nana’s fish tank by throwing a few orange fish into a small tank in the main window? Not that Nana’s tank is Coney Island’s Aquarium, but when I saw a similar front a hop away from Nana, I sarcastically thought, “how original" and wondered if both restaurants are owned by the same person.

The last time I had all-nighter food poisoning was at Burger King. Me/Hungry/Duh + Burger King Sign/Cheap/Instant/Poison = Burger King/Me/Various Body Fluids/Toilet.

Contrary to that experience, I've heard that fast-food franchises are safer to eat from than upscale, unique restaurants.

Who knows, with so much food coming from outside of the country that we can easily produce here, what we’re eating these days? Why did a package of frozen spinach bought in New York come from overseas when we grow spinach here? And with so much food being heavily processed and manipulated by science here, in the USA, who knows what we're eating these days? If you're not careful, you'll eat a pound of lawn fertilizer with your salad.

And ljnd, I'm not surprised that you get food poisoning, especially since you rub your mellons on kittens' heads. Don't eat the kitty fur!
