Was woken up by two rather loud rounds of what seemed like a gun at 4:15am. Very loud and probably 6 shots fired in total. Live on 16th and 6th, but read on twitter of some hearing the mood and clear around 10th street. Does anyone know what was going on?

I heard them too and it scared the crap out of me. I think it was coming from 9th St. My clock said 4:16. I never heard any sirens so I figured everything was ok, but I have no idea

Live on PPW & 1st St. At 4:15 AM this morning (11/8/11) heard 2 loud shots. Within the next 60 seconds, heard 6 fast shots. Sounded as though it was coming from a few blocks away. Expected to hear sirens but didn't.

Wow, I thought it was near 7th or 8th St near PPW or 8th Ave, but definitely gun shots. Couldn't go back to sleep and never heard anything. Nothing on gawker last time I looked, too.

Sadly, gun shots are common enough that Gothamist usually only posts them when someone is actually hit.

So (assuming there were gunshots), it may be that no one was hit.

Yeah, one of those "g" websites that has a map. Is gawker even a website or have I been looking at the recipe gawker website too much?

It sounded so close to me but also like it was inside of a house or a car. I was guessing a neighbor had lost it and offed the family but I heard no screams or any other noise. Brought back memories of many sleepless nights in my gun-happy childhood neighborhood.

I saw no trace of anything amiss in the park when we headed out a little before 7, roamed around the 9th St playground and down to the theater, then east.

You might have had a intoxicated guy decide to shoot his pistol at the moon, then stumble back into his car and drive away.

...unless someone actually sees such incidents, the offenders are very hard to catch.

It definitely was not random and it definitely was where I said on 9th st between 7th and 8th Ave. I heard THE BOOM BOOM without any richet sound. I really thought police would be involved by now.

So, lemme get this straight- you ALL heard the shots, all of you ASSUMED the cops would come, but NONE of you actually called them?

I heard them and idn't call cops. I guess I incorrectly thought that someone in the building or next door would call.

I couldn't be specific enough to call them. "Yeah, I heard gunshots somewhere on 6th or 7th or 8th St or 8th Ave or PPW. I didn't hear any screaming and it sounded like it might have been inside of a house but I can't see anything suspect from my windows." They would just laugh me off the phone, seriously.

I've called to report a horrible car accident that happened outside of our windows. I called before going outside because clearly time was of the essence and the operator gave me hell because I wasn't standing in the middle of the wreck and it took several minutes on the phone before she would send anyone. And that's not the first 911 conversation I've had like that. I could have called but it would have meant nothing. If I had more specific info I would have called.

I get what you're saying, but it really does help for everyone that hears gunshots to call them in. Assuming that the next guy will do it pretty much assures that no one is going to make the call. Also, if each of you had called and said "It sounded like it was coming from X" the police can narrow down their search based upon your locations. Perhaps its just because I live in a neighborhood where shots often equal someone getting shot, but I call in all gunshots, especially if they sound close.

Previous experience with NYC 911 assures me that they would have done nothing with my call. I had far less specific information than previous calls, which were treated as a waste of time due to lack of information (with the wreck she demanded strangely specific information on the victims and cars, which I couldn't give from my window but I could hear and see how bad it was). I have worked in a 911 dispatch room and know what they hear I think I have been pretty clear and level-headed when speaking with them.

Three of the times I was on the phone with them and felt it was not handled quickly enough, people were very badly injured and needed an ambulance. I just hope I never need any emergency services while I live here.

Maybe it was some super awesome firecrackers (definitely regular black cats or bottle rockets), but the pattern of sound seemed much more like a gun than fire crackers.

You do not, for a fact, know that. In the future, just call. If they do nothing with it, then you've done all you can.

There's no way these could have been gunshots, if people heard these noises so far apart - 10th/7th, 16th/6th, etc.

If these alleged shots happened inside an apartment, the noise would not have been heard six or seven blocks away.

The only explanation I can think of that makes any sense is if the noise originated somewhere in the sky, in which case a wide area of people could have heard it.

I heard it loud and clear- I live on 7th st. It was EXTREMELY loud- loud enough for my dog to go ballistic and for me to go to the front door to cautiously check and see if anyone was lying bloodied in the streets. I didn't call 911 for the aforementioned reasons- not sure where they came from.

considering the distance from which people heard this loud noise clearly, I wonder if it could have been a meteor. A small one, the size of a golf ball for example, can create a sonic boom.

It's really strange to me how differently brooklyian and FIPS handled this story.

Brooklyninan quickly jumped to, what I think we can all agree on now, are flat out wrong assumptions about gunshots. The thread is littered with comments like "assuming they were gunshots". What a FOX Newsistic way to assert a falsehood without the burden of standing beside it.

While Brooklynian does maintain a level of intelligence and rational thought it is far out shadowed by some sort of adult onset angst. The whole 911 conversation mixed with the "drunk shots gun at meteor" is comical on the surface, but sadly inward looking and isolationist.

The FIPS article/comments on the other hand are accurate. They are correct. Simple. And appreciated.

I would love to someday be near a meteor strike when it happens.

...that would be way cooler than someone shooting off a gun, or igniting fireworks.

If they were, they are a lousy shot: That cat seems to be still alive.

...From what I read above, the person could have been throwing fireworks at the cat to scare it away.

Read the FIPS thread and it looks like the major difference is that someone on that board was actually on the same block as the fireworks and able to respond to the question while everyone here was far enough away to say "that's what it sounded like to me, as well" and no one posted with any information that contradicted those views. It sounded like gunshots to the people who posted here. Why that is a reflection of "adult onset angst" as opposed to the result of the way sound travels over some distance is beyond me.

"Angst, adult onset" is not listed in the DSM IV as a recognized condition on Axis I even as a "V Code", so a licensed mental health practitioner can not legally diagnose it or treat it. The DSM V will be out soon. Maybe it will be in there.

However, I think we are getting off topic. Does anyone know when Park Slope is expect to have late night fire works again?

....are they going to have fireworks again on New Years Eve?

      Caused by the internet?

Do you think the people writing the DSM V are ready to allow people to diagnose based on something that has only been around for 10 years?

Mama, until pretty recently the DSM classified homosexuality as a disease, and there have been perfectly functional homosexual people since the beginning of humanity.

I do not think it is reasonable to expect them to create a diagnosis as a result of the internet, not even an Axis II personality disorder.

We are supposed to be talking about fireworks!
