HI all, lately there has been a lot of helicopter action in the center Slope. As I'm writing, 6/7 5 pm, its presence is constant, and it seems to be hovering over 2nd/3rd St. Any ideas why? Noise is getting really irritating!

From where I was on PPW, I thought maybe it was more towards the arena for an evening news story or a story on the awning collapse on 5th ave.
-
Interesting. I was at Associated at about 5pm and did notice a helicopter hovering above Union st for a very long time. So maybe that was it.

So it was on the local news, the gate at the 5th Ave. Cat Clinic on the corner of President St. collapsed. I just caught the tail end of the news story, but a mom and child were hurt, apparently one of them bleeding quite badly.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
It's a horrible accident, but does the helicopter still need to be up there, hovering? Are they waiting to see if something else falls on someone?
-
Ok are we talking about the helo that's WAY up there, way higher than a news chopper would ever hover? Maybe over Prospect Heights?
Not to sound paranoid, but also, LGA runway 4 final traffic seems to be diverting west over the East River, rather than the usual 5th Ave approach?
I know it sounds paranoid but this is slightly weird.
-
I've heard it too. It's been up there for hours. Only two people got hurt, I can't imagine them still needing a helicopter for medical or for news. Besides, it's too dark to get any shots for a news segment.
What's up with this helicopter?
-
i'm at the south end of the park and i've been hearing it for hours. wtf?
what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r. -
Only slightly on topic, but this song came to mind.... It was written in reference to the undeclared wars the US was involved in Central American under Ronald Reagan ...lots of helicopters:

Yea, I've heard the helicopter for hours in Prospect Heights/Crown Heights. It finally left about 10 minutes ago. I couldn't see lights, so I doubt it was a news chopper. Apparently, we're not going to find out what it was all about.
-
It's getting quieter over in South Park Slope, but it's still over here. I wonder if the story will just be swept under the rug. There's too much buzz on social networks for it to be completely ignored.
-
was a bit quieter, but still there. i tweeted, but i don't know a good hashtag to get attention

Omg...it is 11:24pm and I am in Clinton Hill and this damn helicopter has been up there about five hours now. WTH is that?
-
Well I called and was told .....a movie is being filmed they want shots of the new arena also. dont know if that is true but allegedly that is the reason for the helicopters.
-
^I could potentially see that as a reason BUT.... how finished is that roof? There's still a lot of construction and debris surrounding it. If it's commissioned by the city or the Nets, I can understand why they'd want aerial shots of it before being completed, but the thing isn't totally finished. Plus, the helicopter was up there for like, 5 hours. I can't imagine they needed to shoot from the same vantage point for 5 whole hours. Unless it was circling-- and forgive me if I'm wrong, but it didn't sound like it was circling. It just sounded like it was hovering....
-
Were they unmarked helicopters?

It's now 12:47 am and I can still hear it about 6 hours this has gone on, also I noticed this past week a major increase in helicopters flying and hovering around parkslope.
-
Same helicopter was hovering above Atlantic/4th on Saturday for almost 10 hours. No way it has to do with a movie being filmed. Its either NYPD or another law enforcement agency.
-
I know it's getting scary now
-
was anyone able to get a look at it? NYPD ones, and the news stations, are marked as such. NOT OKAY

this doesnt explain yesterday, but over the weekend/beginning of the week it was because of the shuttle move & obama visit to the city...
-
Sounds like the Arena is getting a traffic study:

Wow, having an arena on Atlantic is the dummest idea ever.
-
There is a prop plane circuling park slope dragging an advertisement.

From the Prospect Heights board:

Mystery solved. Twitter user @yankees368 somehow tracked the helicopter reg N666NY to one hovering 5,600 ft over Atlantic and Flatbush last night.
A little Googling connected the registrant's address to Sky River Helicopters in NJ, who confirmed to me it was their Robinson R44 (and possibly a second helo taking turns) doing an evening-long traffic study for the DOT.
It's arena-related. Sky River had no idea, but they were super nice and forthcoming.
We can take our tinfoil hats off (for now!) - and probably thank Bruce Ratner for the excitement...
Confirmed. Baseline study of traffic conditions pre-arena opening for DOT.
Beats aerial drones or black helicopters any time though. [quote]

But.. but... I even made one for my cat
