Welcome to Brooklyn NY. It seems like your staying at a place that has lots of chinese residents. I would strongly recommend that you go out and explore some of the amazing parts of Brooklyn.

Maybe look into finding a meet-up group?

Welcome to Brooklyn! I think you're going to love it here! There are so many fun things to do here. It does take time to meet new people but once you do you will like it believe me. My name is April and I belong to some groups where you can make new friends. I belong to a travel group called COUCHSURFING and you can meet people from all over the world. I also go to a non-denominational church on Sunday morning at 11:00am on Washington Avenue near the corner of Bergen Ave. called Abundant Life that is fun and friendly and casual, and you can feel comfortable, and feel relaxed and wear jeans and a t-shirt if you like. I sit in the front row in the middle if you want to come and find me and I'll introduce you to new friends. The music is great and there is free refreshments/food/coffee. But if you're looking for something different, I'm not a drinker but there's a place called Franklin Park and it's a bar/ beer garden where people in Crown Heights hang out and dance/ talk and you can go alone and meet new people. You'll be okay, it's hard at first but don't worry it just takes a little time.

I mean Bergen Street not Avenue.

there's a place in manhattan called the international center. check them out. they have group activities.
don't try to be friends with strangers online. It's dangerous and it makes you sound creepy. It's so hard to be a saint in the city. -
You are welcome to participate in discussions on Brooklynian. Eventually you and some of us will get to know one another. Some of us also occasionally get together in person.

A lot of people have gotten to know each other in real life as a result of on line forums.
People who sound creepy are often not creepy.
People who sound normal are sometimes actually creepy.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Yea whynot, you ended up being pretty darn normal

Depends who you ask.

I meant places like craigslist and such. I would not put it out there that I am looking for friends (online). Too many people out there with bad intentions. I would be careful about giving out personal info to strangers online, esp if I were new to US/NYC.
It's so hard to be a saint in the city.
