Help! Does my cat need to see a vet?

For the last few days, my cat seems to be taking more trips to the litter box. I have been observing and it seems nothing is happening -- neither pee nor poo. It is hard to be absolutely sure since I have two cats and am out of the house so much of the day but when I observe, it seems nothing is happening....

She is still eating, playing, and cuddling.

I called my vet who said it is okay to wait until Saturday morning to bring her to the vet so I don't have to miss work but do experienced cat owners and vets here agree with that?

Should I take her to an emergency vet after work tonight?

I don't think that you need to go to an emergency vet but it does need to be addressed quickly. Maybe try to find another vet with later hours that works for your schedule. I personally would not wait but would not want to pay emergency visit fees.

Don't wait til Saturday. If she's constipated, she'll be in a lot of pain in a day or two.

I would say you may be able to wait till Sat. morn. but that is risky. Have you tried giving it any kind of fish with oil, i.e. tuna, sardines? That may help. But once they stop with "movements" that is not a really good sign.

If you THINK your cat needs to go to the vet, you really should just take her instead of soliciting advice from non-medical, but caring, people here.

If 95% of dog owners pick it up %99 of the time, that leaves a lot of crap on the sidewalk.

does the cat cry when he/she is in the box - if so then they are in pain and need to see a vet immediately. Urinary blockages can be lethal for cats and happens often in male cats who are fed dry food only or other poor diets. Constipation can cure itself with the right diet I would try giving something with mackeral in it as it is a natural diuretic but I would absolutely go to a vet Sat AM, which as this point is two days away, if you do not see results.

I recommend Pet Guard, introduce a small amount as a treat first and increase amount gradually as if you just give a large amount kitty may throw up.

I'm with Alana on this one. If she seems to be straining while trying to pee and you just see a few drops of urine coming out and not a steady stream, it may be a urinary blockage. They're common in cats, but very serious. You'll need to get her on medication and a special diet at least until it clears up or possibly permanently. I've had two cats develop these blockages due to struvite crystals. It's a nasty condition and I wouldn't delay IF you see straining in the litter box and no/little urine being produced.

I hope this Kitty is fine but I gotta weigh in on the posters who are saying,"Duh, if you even pose the question the cat needs to see a vet. " There have been more than a few times when I spent the money to take a pet to the Vet and was told there was no problem or just let's wait this one out with no treatment and see if it resolves but that was money well spent on those visits.

I ended up taking her to the vet after taking some time off from work. In case it wasn't clear, this was more a matter of "How long can/should I wait until she needs to go?" because it isn't easy for me to get time off from work -- so if it was a health issue that could wait until Saturday morning (which the vet said it would have been okay), that is what I was looking for.

That said, I ended up negotiating to leave early from work and she spent 2 nights at the vet's until they saw she was peeing and pooping again and came home with antibiotics and is doing really well.

I just want to say this wasn't very helpful:

It was in fact a bit hurtful. I love my cats I was just trying to triage the situation.

The vet also seemed happy with her iet which is Wellness brand wet and dry food.

I'm glad it all worked out. I know exactly what it's like triaging pet care. Just an FYI, one of my dog's vets has said they are about to take Wellness off their recommended food lists because it was recently purchased by Procter and Gamble and is starting to act a bit shady with ingredient transparency.

(My little beastie is intolerant to chicken AND beef AND pork, so if Wellness goes the way of Nutro in quality, I'm going to be in for a tough search.)
