There's this from Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn
http://onlytheblogknowsbrooklyn.com/2012/10/29/volunteers-welcome-at-local-evacuation-center/I visited our local evacuation center in the John Jay High School Complex yesterday and inquired as to whether they needed volunteers and the answer was a resounding yes. “Especially help with the pets,” Betty, a DOE representative told me.
The Evacuation Centers welcome pets. Yesterday they needed help setting up the pet area at John Jay.
If you are interested in helping with pets or humans, go to John Jay on Seventh Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets in Park Slope (if it’s safe outside). Tell the guard at the door that you are interested in volunteering and they will direct you to the DOE representative in charge. There is a half-hour training session, so it’s best if you can donate at least two hours or more beyond the training.

thanks for posting this!

I would love to help, but it is a bit of a hike for me and I don't want to show up if they don't need help anymore. Any one have any info if they are still looking for help, if so, what hours? Also, if anyone knows of other places needing general assistance, please post those! Thanks!!

There's some stuff about volunteering in this email I just got from councilman Brad Lander. I'm just pasting the whole thing below:
Volunteers Needed
I was heartened by all of the emails I got yesterday from people who wanted to help. There are two shelters in the 39th Council District, John Jay High School and the Park Slope Armory, that need volunteers. You need to be willing to work an eight hour shift and cannot bring your children. The Armory is sheltering people with additional medical needs, so volunteers should be comfortable working with the elderly, disabled, or others who may need extra support. While those are the two shelters in my council district, there may be other shelters closer to you. Enter your address here to find the closest shelter to you and reach out to see if they are also in need of volunteers.
You can sign up to volunteer during future emergencies at the City’s service website.
Reporting Damage
If you see any downed trees or other debris from the storm, your first call should be to 311 (If there is an immediate danger to life, call 911 right away). Make sure to write down the tracking number from your 311 call.We should remember that the effects of this storm are being felt across New York City, and agencies will rightly be prioritizing trees on power lines and other especially dangerous situations.
My office is also recording damage in the district and following up directly with City agencies. You can report storm damage on my website (make sure to include the 311 tracking number).
More News Coming Soon
Mayor Bloomberg is expect to give a press conference shortly with updates on the City’s response to the the storm and updates on transportation and agency closures. I will send out another email later today with additional updates.Gowanus Canal
Many of you contacted me yesterday with concerns about the Gowanus Canal, a highly polluted waterway, which flooded neighboring streets. I have communicated with EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck and NYC Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland. Thanks to both of them for making the time, and communicating quickly (with each other, and with me) about our concerns at the canal. If you live near the canal, do not touch standing water in the area, or any sediment or debris left by Gowanus flood-waters.
After the storm, the EPA and DEP are committed to work together conduct any sampling needed to address potential issues of toxicity created by the flooding.
Prospect Park
We checked in with Prospect Park staff this morning and learned that the park was hit hard. They are still assessing damage, but will be reaching out in the coming days for donations and volunteers to help put the park back together.I look forward to seeing many of you - and working with you - in the coming days as we clean up from the storm.

Lot of non-profits are just realizing how hard they have been affected. Community Access (a mid size mental health agency) is among the first to send out a specific appeal for donations:

Has anyone actually done any volunteering so far?
FIPS posted some info and a shelter a good walk away from me is asking for several things we have and I can't carry it all that far. I was wondering if John Jay or the 8th Ave Armory might need similar things since I could feasibly do multiple trips to those places to take stuff.
-
John Jay is no longer accepting donations, at least as of my visit around 1:15 today.
-
I volunteered at the Armory on Tuesday evening. We were giving out food.
They need a lot of volunteers. The entrance is on 15th St near 8th Avenue.
They also need medical volunteers.

Mental Health Clinicians are also being sought:
DOHMH »
Dear Mental Health Providers,
As you are probably aware by now, the impact of Hurricane Sandy has driven a far greater number of New Yorkers into shelters than originally anticipated.
As a result, the City is asking for volunteers to support the City’s efforts to staff these shelters. If you are a mental health clinician and are able to volunteer to provide disaster mental health support within the City’s Evacuation Shelters which have been opened in response to Hurricane Sandy, please follow the instructions below.
The first thing you need to do is register with the Medical Reserve Corp’s (MRC). You do this by simply going to the following link:
https://apps.nyhealth.gov/vms/appmanager/vms/public?prog=34 and going to the log in now button. That will take you to a registration page where you follow the instructions to register for an account. (This takes approximately 5 minutes.)
Once you have completed the enrollment process with MRC please call the DOHMH Call Center at 1-347-396-7950 to schedule your shift.
Thank you for your willingness to assist.
Trish Marsik, Assistant Commissioner for NYC’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Please note: that you can use staff who are paid on DOHMH contracts and leverage under-spending and accruals in those contracts to support these additional costs. However, you must track these hours separate from your other contractual work so that we can leverage Federal reimbursement to the extent possible. If you have questions about this, let me know. Otherwise, follow the instructions above and call the number above. Responding to this email will NOT register you to assist.
Please do not just show up to shelters without having been assigned. We are grateful for your dedication and service in this time of need.

I would love to help, but I have absolutely no means of traveling outside of either walking or hoping someone pick me up in a car pool. I am going to register now, but I don't know if there is anything nearby me.

I saw an update earlier that even the Armory doesn't want more volunteers unless you have medical training since they have so many infirm residents. That could change but the last message said that they need $$ for the soup kitchen, not more bodies.
Ah, found it. This is copied from an email sent out by councilman Brad Lander:
Please donate financially to help Masbia provide hot meals at Park Slope Armory: Yesterday, the Park Slope Armory got more than 500 evacuees from Adult Care Homes in flooded parts of the city. Everyone who is staying there needs special attention, including elderly people and many people with physical or mental disabilities. People came in cold, wet, and hungry - and the Armory had only limited cold food for them to eat. I put out a call to the wonderful Masbia soup kitchen, who cooked and delivered enough hot meals for everyone at the shelter. For people in wet socks who can’t go home, you can imagine how important that was. I’ve asked him to do the same thing this evening, but it is a big expenditure for this small non-profit, so I am hoping we can raise some funds to help Masbia cover its costs -
Friendly reminder: After disasters, many entities which have no experience in providing relief and/or are not registered as charities, solicit donations from the public.
If you choose to donate cash, please only donate to entities which are listed on Guidestar.
Masbia is registered

Why on earth is the city not providing hot meals at the shelter? Sounds like this was poor planning. Masbia is doing a mitzvah!

Just show up in any of the devastated areas --- there are local groups always looking for help. Here's a piece that talks about what they're doing in the Rockaways: http://www.reuters.com/video/2012/11/08/reuters-tv-anatomy-of-a-recovery-rebuilding-from-sa?videoId=239011074&videoChannel=117777

Sorry Stella, somehow I missed updates to this thread. I was raking up things and piling branches for collection. They finished big volunteer events last Sunday. The crews working there have gotten a lot done to clear paths, but there is still a lot of work for chainsaws and chippers, and the snow brought down quite a few more branches. The turn out Friday-Sunday was great and I think a lot was accomplished.
Occupy Sandy seems to be well organized so that's a good group to reach out to if you want to volunteer. Also, various blogs have been posting info for helping. I'd keep an eye on Gothamist, Brokelyn, FIPS, Here's Park Slope, and sometimes Brownstoner.
