      ice cream is for children

once you move in, you'll come to appreciate the niceties of italian ices

unfortunately, the only italian ice in the neighborhood is uncle louie g's

who is a pale ripoff of Lemon Ice King in corona, queens

Lemon Ice King has chunks of pineapple in their pineapple ice

chunks big enough to poke an eye out...

Not to mention their hideous full-wall murals, and the proprietor's repugnant, omnipresent bright yellow Hummer that takes up roughly ten otherwise viable parking spots.

I saw Uncle Louie yelling at a kid for touching his ridiculous vehicle...and their ice cream sucks.

The sandwich shop Tempo Presto makes gelato. Super fine!

There was a pistachio-something flavor that was off the hook . . . but the er, "mojito" sucked.

And of course there's a Hagen Daz on Seventh. Anything but Louie G.

I'll tell you what sucks - whenever someone asks for a recommendation on something this list immediately dives into what sucks. Not a nice environment at all. Pitu - I thought you were in the school of thought that says kids should stay at home until they are 18 lest you be disturbed during a meal or a beer? God forbid one gets reprimanded for sticking his paws on someone else’s car. And does the hummer really take up 10 spaces kittygolightly? Get a grip you grumpy old blowhards.

The ice cream at Uncle Louie Gs is great and cheap. It's a locally owned company and not a national franchise. The service could be better - but what do you expect? It is ICE CREAM for goodness sake. Tempo Pesto's gelato IS very good too, but at $4 for a small cone - it should be.

Guess you don't know me, Bubba. I'm in the "school" that say parents shouldn't be assholes, and local ice cream moguls should not scream at children. Uncle Louie is a real prick.

And the ice cream is nasty cheap shit that is overpriced. For 50 cents more, you get quality gelato at Tempo Presto.

Or you'd be better off getting something out of the case at the bodega around the corner, or from the Mr Softee truck.

I'll gladly confirm that Uncle Louie is an unpleasant fellow from what I have seen. And the ice/ice cream is nothing special.

I don't give a hoot if it is a chain (OH NOES!) Maggie Moo's is the best dedicated ice cream shop in the area. Giving credit where it's due. Haggen Daaz is fine, nothing spectacular.

Hey - parking is a blood sport in this neighborhood. If it's taking up more than one space, it's a problem.

I wouldn't be quite so irked if the ice were actually good, but it's not.

And on plenty of other threads, I've commented on food/services/etc. that I think are really great. I just haven't found gelato, ice cream or ice that gives me any reason to not be craving the stuff at Otto in its stead.

Personally, I'm glad when I get advice to steer clear of a place that's not worth my time. I'm not kvetching just to kvetch.

      Mojo Cafe? 7th Ave @ 3rd St.

      Nice folks, good coffee.

Not Carvel anymore, but Carvel hasn't been the same since the inventor of "Fudgie the Whale" "Cookie Puss" and "Wednesday is Sundae" died some years ago.

Great for your standard soft-serve cone in the summer. Mmmmm ... cone.

Maggie Moo's ice cream is awful. Bland and tasteless. Uncle Louie G's ice cream is probably the best in the 'hood regardless of who the owner is and what kind of car he drives. Tempo Presto is overpriced, but it is excellent. Haggen Daaz is very good, but the store on 7th Ave is always a mess and where do they find the people that "work" behind the counter? Mojo Cafe is the place for soft serve as dw438 says - but nothing special.

So the answer to the question is......

      1. Uncle Louie G (if you can tolerate the not nice owner)

      2. Tempo Presto (bring a lot of money)

      3. Haggen Daaz (bring a lot of patience)

      4. Mojo Cafe

      5. Ben and Jerry's from any bodega

Avoid Maggie Moo's unless your ice cream jones is killing you.

Uncle Louie Gs has good ices. His murals are fun. The staff is more authentically Brooklyn than any of the tools posting here ever will be. And yes, sadly, they have an ugly Hummer. Does that warrant the pillorying he's getting here, as if you were discussing friggin' Halliburton. Give me a break. It's ITALIAN ICE people.

      yeah, whatever, Bubba.

I just remembered you're the girl that swiped somebody else's handle on Craigslist and started posting inflamatory things on this site awhile back...my bad for feeding the troll . . .

      the original nonsense . . .

      BigBubba »
Just for the sake of clarity, the "BigBubba" poster is NOT the BigBubba of Craig's List Housing Forum, where the moniker originated. He is a weak imitator, and a poor one at that who has adopted the name for some reason.

      IMO, he's really a troll.

I really did not mean to get everyone so excited. My original point was just to say that I think I have a right to eat out too with my son. I don't have a right to be a jerk or to let my son ruin anyone else’s meal. Most parent’s know this and act appropriately.

As far as you go Original_CL_BigBubba I stole your moniker because you are a pompous arrogant buffoon . I did it to get your goat and I am glad it worked. I promise to retire using the name now. Can we make up and be friends? I'll even buy you a beer. What is your e-mail address?

I am so proud that this is the only website in the world where a subject as innocuous as ice cream can generate such controversy.

Seriously, though... how useful would it be if people here just agreed with each other and limited their discussions to "businesses we like"? For example, should we let substandard restaurants "get away" with cutting corners, or should we bring the problem to light here?

Would that it were so. You should see the group for my co-op. 2 months and counting just to re-tile the elevator floor. One would think it's something that, like, matters.

I almost feel scared to ask this question given the vibe of the thread, but has anyone tried the ice cream cakes at Mojo's Cafe? The ones at Maggie Moo's are so expensive but I think my kid would love an ice cream cake this year. It says they are made fresh daily but the whole place looks kinda dodgy with the old Carvel ghost sign out front etc.

the chocolate peanut butter ice cream from louie g's is superb.

aside from that, i only eat belgian chocolate chocolate from haagen dazs. i know, i know, HD has one of the worst corporate records on gay rights... but something tells me uncle louie is a homophobe too.

The Chocolate Room on 5th Ave. makes awesome homemade ice cream. I had the chocolate sundae, which was yummy and one friend had fresh mint ice cream which was delicious beyond belief.

Well, actually one of the owners of Mojo is kind of an a--hole. I had a run in with him a few years ago when I had space in the building and asked him to take care of things he was obligated to.

I've never had Louie Gs ice cream, but the hummer is a big turnoff, though I doubt the owner could fit in anything smaller, he's morbidly obese.

If I can get in on that trip to Carvel, that would be sweet.

I take take your point about the fat, but as large as Hummers are the interior is actually kinda cramped.

I still say Maggie Moo's. The few times I've had Baby Huey's Ice cream my impression was that it was just Hood or Sealtest. Fine in a pinch, but not great.

Makes sense. I would bet a lot of the space is needed for the gas tank!
