My wife and I have decided to try some Indian Food being as we enjoy dining out and we are getting tired of the same old restaurants we go to time and time again.

We have never eaten this kind of stuff and was wondering if some of you may be able to suggest things that you all find tasty and what is in them.

Im highly allergic to shellfish and my wife does not particularly like pork and wont touch lamb... any ideas?

Go to Queens - the Indian food in Park Slope sucks horrendously.

Deriously.. I think Indian Cuisine should be on the no list.

But, find a good place in Queens and explain the restriction an they might be able to present a meal to turn these opinions around.

My wife and I who love Indian Food (especially on a cool Fall evening) have found Indian Food can be hit or miss. In fact we have yet to find any Indian worthwhile of a second visit in Park Slope. However, Raga on Smith Street is very good. As vegetarians, we are fans of their vegetable dishes but I'm positive everything on the menu is quality. Chicken TIkki Masala seems to be a good intro for people new to the cuisine, you may want to start there.

I think Kinara on Fifth Ave & Tenth Street is pretty good. Joy on Flatbush & St Marks isn't bad. While they won't win awards for decor, neither of those places "sucks horrendously." Meanwhile, I've had a few bad Indian meals in Queens, (it's a big borough).

Raga on Smith Street is pretty good. I second that emotion.

Do a search on Indian food and park slope here and you'll find tons of topics and most agree PS has sucky Indian.

As for dishes, I love Saag Paneer and you can't go wrong with tiki masala & tandori chicken. All good choices for someones first try at Indian.

Kinara is pretty good, especially if you get the 50% off lunch deal (in-house only). Even the steam-table joint in go to in NYC for lunch is better, though. Still, worth a stop for lunch. I've also heard good things about Balaka, but haven't tried it yet. Regarding Queens, I used to live in Sunnyside and have had some dreadful meals in Jackson Heights. There was one standout there that went out of business. Everyone there loves Spicy Mina and it is really good, but before it was "Spicy" I got tired of the hardsell to order more than you wanted.

Kinara and Joy are decent delivery options. We've never been disappointed with either of them. I wouldn't necessarily make a visit to either, although we've eaten at Joy a few times. Balaka is bland bland bland. Baluchi's is a chain and also pretty meh. All of the others in the nabe are no-go zones.

I've eaten Indian food all over this city. Kinara's not as good as the best places in Curry Hill & Jackson Heights, but it's better than average, (and certainly far from "sucky"). The dining room lacks charm, but the delicious dhal makes up for that.

There's Sapid on Washington Ave in PH. It opened not too long ago, and it's pretty good.

I have a shellfish allergy, and I'm not too keen on lamb. I've never had a problem with either of these two conditions in an Indian restaurant. I would say that most restaurants have chicken, vegetarian, fish (you can eat fish, right?) options.

I don't know what your experience has been, but I find a shellfish allergy very easy to work around (and I have a very broad palate, and I'm not shy about trying different restaurants and cuisines.)

Yeah I'll second Sapid. They have a delivery special on menupages where you get an appetizer, entree, and naan, rice, chutney, and sauces for like 12 bucks, and it's more than enough for 2 people. Everything I've gotten there has been good, except for the fish pakora.

Sapid is excellent. Joy is almost as good, and it is right across the street from Park Slope on Flatbush.
