Has anyone else noticed that the directions Con Ed gives to read your own meter are leaving out a vital piece of information? First off, the instructions on the bill are DIFFERENT than the ones online. Online they add this valuable tidbit which is left off the printed copy from the bill....

      2. Always record the smaller number when the dial hand is in between numbers. The only time you don't use a lower number is when the hand is between 9 and 0, then it is read as a 9.

Until I went online, I had put one of the numbers at 0. So I changed it to a 9. Nice.

But here's the kicker...the one that is driving me insane....here's the instructions for how to read if the dial is directly on a number....(Why on earth you can't just write down the fricking number it's on, I'll never know)

      3. If the dial hand is lying directly on a number, the dial to the right will determine its reading.

      1. If the dial hand on the right is between 0 and 4, record as the hand indicates.

      2. If the dial hand on the right is between 7 and 0, record one less than the hand indicates.

WHATS MISSING HERE IS THAT THE NUMBERS ON THE METER GO UP TO 9 NOT 7. So if your number to the right is an 8 or a 9 wtf are you supposed to do? So even if you could read your own damn meter, you STILL have to call Customer Service to help you through.

      Grrrrrrrr....

I have been home the last two times they were supposed to come and read my meter. No one came by, they never leave the card on the door, and when I do leave the meter reading taped to the front door, no one takes that either. Then they estimate the reading and send me a nasty note saying that I need to pay Con Ed to come and take my meter reading because it has been estimated for too many months in a row. Go figure.....

And don't get me started on Keyspan. We are home most of the time but what those guys have been trained to do is ring the bell at 7;30am and immediately run away down the block or hide in the bushes so they get a laugh when you open the door in your pjs and no one is there.. That visit gets follow up with the nasty... we can't get in to read the meter letter.

      Blech!!

i think you can submit meter readings on-line, but i forget if that's for keyspan, coned or both?

Just called customer service to ask about the stupid meter reading instructions. Guy on the phone told me to disregard all the crazy rules for reading when it falls directly on a number. Just give the number the arrow lies on. He had no idea why they make it so complicated, but luckily he was very nice.

And I have to say that was the easiest way to read the meter, instead of using the automated phone service or doing it online. Both of those are just endless minutes of frustration. Just call customer service at 1.800.752.6633 and press pound, talk to a human being and give them the meter reading.

For Keyspan I had a remote reader, maybe radio frequency ID, installed for around $75 - never have to worry about this.

ConEd must have a stronger meter reading union b/c the technolgy is there to read these remotely. Anyway, while reading the meter instructions are too complicated to write here, do follow the instructions on the web. The key is that all 4 dials don't spin clockwise like you might think. Every other one spins a different direction. So your instinct to write the higher or lower # doesn't apply.

i just wish coned would get with the times.

I hadn't realized the levels of ConEd meter reading insanity. I moved into my current apartment in April. I got an electricity bill in May that was like $85. Which I thought was high, since I only had a refrigerator and lights. And my computer. And the TV. Oh, and the microwave. And other crap. So whatever. Then it was like $105 for June. Which seemed excessively high to me. And I went, hell NO can I afford air conditioning. And I asked around and was told $80-85 was about right, so I figured screw it, I'm in the ballpark. So I put my air conditioner in storage and just sweated it out. $105 in July. Now here in August, I get a bill saying some bullshit about reading the meter and backdating stuff, and it gave me credit for the $285 against a total of $135 usage since April, leaving me a credit of $150. And now I feel stupid for sweating the whole summer and not using my AC, which I guess I could have afforded after all, were they not so retarded. On the plus side, I won't have to pay electricity for several months into the future, I guess. Yay me. King of the idiots.

You're making me want to poke my eyes out with a spoon. Stop that.

Bringing the term thin-skinned to a whole new level!

It sounds like you're getting an estimated bill instead of one where they read the meter. In that case, they would base it on the average use of others in your area. If you aren't there when the guy reads the meter, you need to do it yourself and phone it in on a regular basis. That way they will get a sense of what you actually use, and future estimates can be based on that.

Let me tell you about my Con Ed reader meter person. We have a deep relationship. Since we are working at home we are here most of the time and our relationship happens once a month but nonetheless it is a story.
He is a lanky fellow and says NOTHING. He goes downstairs and reads the meter. Same guy/ many years and he knows where the lights are. Sometimes he will mutter.."no need/ I know where I am going. At the end of his visits I thank him.... a lot...figure no one else does that... I think in his spare time he is a serial killer.
