I live on 2nd Street and 8th Avenue and am totally fed up with TWC. I have their triple play. The telephone and Internet access breaks down on almost a daily basis. The customer service is appalling. As far as I can tell, Verizon doesn't offer Internet access in my zipcode (11215). Any ideas about other providers/options? Thanks.

Verizon offers DSL service here, yes they do, I used to have it and I live very close to you. But, FIOS is not yet available, which is what the entire neighborhood is waiting for. -

I had this problem for a while. You should call the service people during one of your outages. I did this, they detected "low voltage" or whatever, and so they sent one of their entry level technicians out to my house. Of course it is working when he gets there and the voltage isn't actually low, but he changes out my modem anyway. It goes out again about 10 mins later. They send an advanced tech who finds the actual problem - apparently my cable wasn't connected to the nearest distribution point or whatever (I can't remember the terminology, this was a few months ago) - it was connected to one way far away that was overloaded. The guy (who I meant to write a nice letter to his boss about) got out in the building's back yard and redid all the cables back there despite the rain and my neighbor's large dog barking at him nonstop for a half hour, then called some other even more technical crew who apparently redid the wiring on their end the next day. Problem was finally fixed. I said all this to say - TWC will actually fix intermittent outage problems, you just have to be persistent. Took me 4 calls, 2 technicians, and the mystery tech crew, but it works without fail now. My current Triple Play complaint - my bill jumped $40 a month over last year's rate. I miss living somewhere where I could get RCN, they were the best (and used to be called Starpower! I loved me some Starpower.) -
Subject: Time Warner Cable Park Slope
I've been with TWC for over 6 years. 3 in downtown manhattan and 3 in Park Slope. I live on 2nd and 6th ave in the slope, and TWC internet is just unacceptably unreliable. Over the last several months I've had numerous phone calls, a couple techs out, and the service never consistently works. The first tech switched the modem, and left. And the service was intermittent again after a few hours. The second tech came about a month later, and was awesome, knowledgeable, and spent an hour up a telephone poll fixing wires and stuff. Internet worked well after that... for a few days. I think they just don't have the bandwidth and infrastructure do deliver consistently quality service to the this part of Park Slope. I've known a lot of neighbors to have similar problems. Especially during peak times during the day. I called the last couple days, and finally decided the best option was to cancel TWC all together. Their reps have gotten better, but they can't make up for the fact that the service here stinks. After an hour on the phone, they agreed to credit a week of service, and are paying for the shipping to return the equipment, so that I don't have to wait at a center. As for TV alternatives, HD antenna quality is pristine with a $10 HD antenna from Best Buy. I'm hooking it up to Tivo HD for $12/month. Researching alternatives for internet. I'm willing to give anyone a shot now while we wait for FIOS. So long TWC. I urge other slopers to leave and try alternatives. I think it's the only way we'll be able to truly improve the service here~ -
After about 10 years with their cable service, I learned to hate TWC with the fire of a thousand suns. It became a personal crusade to never give them another dime. We signed up with DirectTV (through Costco -- not sure whether we got a better deal than we otherwise would have), and have been much happier. It's cheaper, too. As for internet, we've had Speakeasy DSL since 1999. Love Speakeasy, though it's kind of expensive for the speed. There are very, very rarely any outages (once a year, tops), and they're good people there. They're West Coast-based, though, and I'm not sure whether they want any more East Coast accounts. We might be grandfathered in. For phone service, boring ol' Verizon works well for us. We just got a TWC "Join Triple Play! Such a deal!" mailer today, and I said to hubby that I would rather just give my money to the American Nazi Party every month. They're less evil.
i blame such comments on boredom and drinkng, this is why we need more green spaces

Ok everybody can flame if they want, but I'm moving into the Argyle at 4th Ave. I've scheduled for FIOS install. So FIOS is possible in PS/Gowanus.

Verizon does have DSL service in Park Slope. I've had it for about 5 years, in two separate areas of the Slope, with no problems. I had tons of problems TWC internet before that. I also subscribe to Dish Network, which is much cheaper than TWC (though I miss NY1). I like it just fine, though it can temporarily lose service during a storm sometimes, and their customer service isn't great, but who's is???
-
I'm a few block away from OP and have had Version DSL for years and apart from it not being the fastest I've had no problems at all (knock on wood)

wow, you bought or are renting? How is the pricing there? -
Bought. Pricing is what you see when you go to the Verizon.com/seefios page. I'm going with the 25/15 plan., 69/month.

Be careful with DirecTV - the pricing they advertise is only after rebates that you have to sign up for separately, and I've spent two months fighting with them to get them to actually apply the promised rebate to my account. Plus, sign up for DirecTV now and you'll likely be locked into a two-year deal with a $400 early termination charge. These guys do not play fair. http://consumerist.com/tag/directv/ -
I am having the worst experience EVER with TWC!! I live in Boerum Hill. And since about November of last year some of our TV channels would no longer come in. So a technician came out. I had to schedule it at a time when our basement neighbors would be home because they have access to the back yard. The guy re-ran a wire to our house and that seemed to fix it. Until about a month later we started having trouble when stations would come in at times and not come in at others. Fast forward to the beginning of July and our internet and phone goes out completely. A technician came out, went out to the back yard (this one was nice enough to go down the fire escape because my neighbors weren't home). Well he tells me that it's a signal problem out at the utility pole in the back yard and he will have to call in some other kind of technicial because of the weak signal to our apartment. But here's the kicker, they only do ALL DAY appoints for that. They show up to try and get back there during the day and of course no one is home because they're all at work. We've gone now almost 3 full weeks without internet or phone because the only way into the back yard is through a neighbors apartment or the house next door and because they don't do time appointments there's no way I can ask someone to take a day off of work to do it.
-
Rob, have you thought about bribing your TWC guy to go down the fire escape? Set up the appointment and have a $50 buck ready. Seriously, coming from a blue collar family, some hard cash always does the trick. Or, ask your downstairs neighbors if you can borrow the key and let them in. Pay them the $50 or beg and plead and offer some nice wine or baked goods. It's worth it to get your cable back right? It's like being stuck between and rock and a hard place with TWC.(\__/)

Ok so I asked the Verizon FIOS tech who showed up today. Argyle is on the edge of the Bridge Str station that has been upgraded. Everything on the other side of 4 Ave belongs to the 14th Str station and that will take a long time till it is upgraded because they need permission from all the property owners to bury a new line. or so he told me. I'm just the messenger.
-
which side is the "other side" of 4th ave? towards 3rd or towards 5th? And....now that it's installed, what do you think of it?
-
Towards 5th belongs to the 14st station. dl/up for verizon 20/15 (ordered 25/15, but it's great) dl/up for cable 5/.5 Did speedtest.net when it was activated.

Those of you who say you get Verizon DSL in the slope - did the webpage tell you that there wasn't any service available? I put in my address to get started with their version of the Triple Play (less money, more channels, free netbook!) and the website said no DSL was available at my address.
-
Don't trust the web page. You have to call, and even then, you might have to talk to a number of people. We got a conflicting stories, but it turned out we did have Verizon DSL on our block (Saint Johns btw 5th and 6th). Service is good, no outages. We had trouble with our router (burned out after five years) and they sent a new one for free.

What is the advantage of using Speakeasy DSL instead of Verizon DSL? Aren't the wires and and central office equipment all still Verizon regardless? -
We're at Garfield between 7th & 8th aves., have been using Verizon DSL for 3 years now. No problems at all - it's not the fastest, but adequate, $19.99 month on your phone bill.
-
I have a projector connected to my iMac and I get all the TV I want through the Internet for free. No more Time Warner Cable (um, except for the Internet connection). Once you cancel cable and rely on the Internet, you can find plenty to watch, including the shows you really want to see. It's on the net somewhere.

I am getting Speakeasy DSL (having the line installed soon). The advantage for me is that Verizon doesn't service my address. I don't know why this is, since Speakeasy has no problems servicing it, but when I called Verizon they told me they do not offer DSL at my address. I would have just gone with Verizon if they offered it. -

I like the service so I have stayed with them even though there are cheaper options now. Originally I had SDSL, which came in on a second line provided by Covad that had no dial tone. 6 years ago they removed that and switched me to ADSL which runs on the regular phone line. The only problem I had was when squirrels ate the insulation and it wouldn't work when it was raining (Verizon replaced the cable with one that they say doesn't taste as good). BTW, Speakeasy was acquired by Best Buy a few years ago.
