I'm thinking of renovating my kitchen.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced architect, project manager or contractor who could be recommended. Thanks.

My wife and I just redid our kitchen in Ikea. It was very affordable and the results are beautiful. While Ikea is meant to be do-it yourself there are several contractors that specialize in Ikea kitchen renovations. We used Kitchen Republic, and they were a pleasure to work with. We were very involved in the process, making important decisions on our own when we were comfortable and letting them take the lead where we weren't...

      Slopestar or anyone else:

Do you know if Ikea sells solid wood cabinets and cabinet doors? I asked Ikea customer service and they didn't know! Also, how is your new kitchen holding up?

ikea does not sell solid wood cabinets (or solid wood anything as far as i know). Their cabinet frames come in 2 colors: birch and white but they offer several lines of doors and each line has several color choices. They also offer cover panels and trim and molding to match the doors and when the whole kitchen is up the frames are only visible from the inside. I think this is one of the ways they save on cost. It keeps the biggest items moving quickly but still allows customers several options to get the look they want. Also cabinets come in several sizes with several options for interior configurations. Overall you get an experience where you feel like you are customizing the kitchen to your needs. They also have a free design tool on their website and this just gives an even greater sense of control.

Our kitchen is too young to give any information about the durability of the materials, but we did install an ikea kitchen in our last apartment and it held up well over the 4+ years that we used it. Definitely their laminated countertops were chipped in a few places, but why would you put laminated countertops when they sell and install stone for $55-75 per sq foot (not an option 4 years ago).

I would recommend getting your appliances, sink and faucet elsewhere. We got our range and faucet from Ikea (lowes and overstock.com for everything else). The range is ok (definitely the cheapest option, but quality could be better) the faucet looks great but the pull out mechanism leaves a lot to be desired

Anyway, i am very proud of the kitchen and we get compliments from everyone who sees it. I would be happy to share more information if you are interested.

You may want to check out these guys: http://www.modernkitchens.net/. They do everything from the drawings to installations. They also have an extensive showroom. Saying this, like any other contractor, you need to keep on top of them and make sure they explain everything in detail to you. Such as the differences in price, quality, material and so on. I will suggest you get your sink and water fixtures from Park Slope Plumbing on Prospect Ave. & 5th Ave. And even with them, make sure you do your research on the brands they may recommend. I like Delta, Grohe, Rohl and California Faucet, going from decently priced to expensive water fixtures, respectively. And, they are all solidly built,IMO. Maybe even Chicago Faucet and Toto too.
