Last night we found a black short-hair kitten around 4-6 weeks old crying for hours on 8th St between 7th & 8th. I'll provide background below but if you know anything, post here.

      Background :

We have two cats so we had supplies. Our cats were pissed but we kept the little girl(?) kitten in the bathroom with a blanket, water, and litter (which she used, high five kitty!). We fed her watered down cat pate which she ate vigorously (she is looking much better this morning). We were unsure if cows milk would be too complex/different for such a young one.

She has an eye infection and an upper respiratory infection so we're taking her to our vet for a checkup and possible treatment. We have a friend who may take her (or no-kill animal shelter) so we're not looking for candidates really.

She loves to be loved and played with but the poor thing misses her mom. We know we maybe shouldn't have separated her, but she was running in the busy streets and cried for hours, given this and the infections, its good we can get care and love for her.

I think you did the humane thing by taking her in; it's possible that something happened to the mother cat so please don't beat yourself up about seperating her.
You can get kitten formula at any pet store to feed her until she is ready for solid food, but I'm sure the vet will give you instructions on that.
      Good Luck !

Thanks d_luxx for the reassurance and the formula tip. Its been a while since we had a little guy.

If you or anyone knows any good no-kill adoption centres with availability - we'd appreciate it. (Not sure if we will go that route but is certainty good to have in case.) Our vet recommended one but we're not sure our guy can go since he is probably under 8weeks/2lbs and has the infection (their rules).

      UPDATE :

She is back from the vet free of FIV and Feline Leukemia. Apparently she is 8weeks not 4 or 6. Infections should be gone in a week with treatment and once she is 230g heavier we can get her fixed and in a no-kill shelter. But......

she's so cute we may just keep her.

Still - if you know about a missing (and formerly neglected) kitty - let me know.

...actually I can't assume neglected. Just out of human care for an extended period.

I know you don't like to assume neglect, but I expect that this kitten is the last of an accidental litter and was dumped because mom's owners didn't want her. Thank you for taking her in before she became a dog or racoon's dinner. Hope you find a home for her.

Here is Gemsi*. She's getting stronger by the day and is eating, drinking and releasing normally. She is in love with us and napped on my chest this morning.

So here is a picture of her : (She looks tired after 45min of string play).

*(An old Icelandic word originally meaning a lamb who has been separated from its mother, it now means cell phone (a "vocalization" of GSM).)

A million Hoorays for rescuing her. You will not be able to beat her off you with a stick, and come the time I bet there is no way you will be able to part with her. You saved her life!!

This is pretty much how I ended up with a 3rd cat.... you won't be able to give her up!
