My friend has recently just become single, and has been moping and wallowing in self-pity for a while. And he just moved to Park Slope. Thought a good thing to do would be to take him out on a Park Slope pub crawl. First, it'll help him learn about his new neighborhood, and second it'll help him meet some new people. Can you give me some ideas? Only place I know so far is Union Hall. Also, places with a good singles scene and hooking up are encouraged, as I think meeting some new women will definitely help him out too.

Just pick places you like! I mean, no one knows this person better than you, right? Any place that serves alcohol and has more than five chicks in it should be sufficient for a good time..."...you can choose the rain....but I choose the sun..." - N. Costa

How about 200 Fifth, on 5th ave? It's a restaurant/bar/club. On weekends, it's usually pretty busy. You guys can get friendly with some girls who are enjoying their evening there.

i lay my reccomendation at at Buttermilk (atleast it was still cool when i lived there?) on 5th and i think 16th? or depending on what kinda gal he's into/can handle, Lucky 13 on 13th and 5th is always a good time."the radio makes hideous sounds"

Well, being married has cut down on my bar knowledge, but I would probably say it might serve you best to start off at the bars on 4th Ave (afraid I am not quite up to date on what is open), then walk up Union Street to 200 5th. Once on 5th Ave, hit up: 200 5th Union Hall Lighthouse Great Lakes Loki The Gate Most, if not all Park Slope bars can be found here: http://www.sheckys.com/newyorkcity/search/search.asp?searchby=neighborhood

The only time I randomly hooked up with a chick was the time a met a little hottie at Buttermilk. So that counts for something. 200 Fifth is great for watching a game...for meeting girls? Not so much.

On hooking up in bars: For the man or woman hoping to “hook up” in a bar let me remind you of this – it only takes one. This applies to late inning at bat just as well as a late night romantic encounter. You need to keep your eye on the prize… don’t dwell on your last strike out, one swing, just make some hard contact… What about bars? Not sure where you are starting, but I recommend ending close to home for obvious reasons. Let’s focus on 5th Ave., say 18st to 1st street. Buttermilk – skip it. It’s done. Old news. An exception would be as your last stop… any bar is good enough for a last stop. Commonwealth – 12st. – Nice place. Good gay bartender. It has enough space and is normally pretty well stocked with nice looking guys and gals. The problem is this place is haunted by isolationism. For some reason the patrons voluntary isolate themselves in groups of 2, 3, or 4. There tends to be little interaction between the groups. Certainly, the charismatic man can break through. At the end of the day this bar is all too typical… so why bother when…. ..Royale is across the street – not so typical. Interesting crowd, late night dancing in the back. Late night sort of place. It is the “never know what you are going to find sort of place”. It can attract a bit of the Bayridge/Jersey crowd, however, doesn’t tend to get overwhelmed by it. Interesting place, nice bartender, dark, booths in back, DJ. Timboos – 11th street – skip it unless you are 55+ and a drunk. Dram Shop – 9th street btw 5th and 6th – New place. Serves food late night. Pool table and bar shuffle board table. Lot’s of TVs should a game be on. Nice place. It can get a little drunk at times, a little too much testosterone. I recommend dropping in on the early side, say before 11:30. You’ll find it packed and buzzing. You’ll find a number of underage drinkers (in case you like the young women) in a very professionally run bar that is for some reason a little slow with drinks. Smiths Taven – 9th street – never actually been in there. Excelsior – 6th street – gay bar – not that there’s anything wrong with that. Bar Reis – 6th street – an unassuming sort of place. Depending on who’s counting is has 4 levels (main bar, small upper loft, basement (with pool table), and expansive backyard.). Good bartenders. Regulars make the world go round and this place has some of the better ones. Reasonable drinks, good service, plenty of space… As for the crowd: tends to skew artsy, media, young professional sort – usually a good 50/50 girl guy split. The place is refreshingly free of attitude. It somehow creates a friendly atmosphere… It defeats the isolationism of Commonwealth. And if you want to smoke a funny cigarette in the back be nice and pass it along. So, yeah, I recommend the place. Gingers 5th street – lesbian bar – not that there’s anything wrong with that. The Gate 3rd street – kinda like Commonwealth with less isolationism. I’m still not sure what drives people to congregate on the outside patio. A square concrete slab with shitty tables, enclosed by unattractive…uh, gating. Oh, tons of interesting beers, definitely worth dropping in for a few. Loki 2nd street – Strange place. Nice bouncer, professional bartenders, huge space, backyard, with a pool table. Likely the most racially diverse place (should you not be white– not that there’s anything wrong with that) thus far. A true hit or miss sort of place. A buck premium on drinks here all the sudden. Blue Ribbon 1st street – fanciest place thus far. Stop in for a martini. Adam, the bartender is a nice guy. If the 30+ year old, worked out, made up, sober drunk, is your thing then stop in for two… this is a humble opinion based on a lifetime of experience… do with it what you will. Great Lakes – 1st street – dark, dirty, not quite a dive… everyone says it has an amazing jukebox… I appreciate the most subjective of opinions, however, struggle to find the relevance of this comment. Not a very social place. Stop in for a drink… again, it only takes one. hmmm… we are almost to the end of crawl… shall we keep going? Of course. Lighthouse - Carroll street – a good reparative experience following Blue Ribbon. Good beers. TV, board games, and that golfing video game. Not at all fancy. Again, it only takes one. Moutarde – Carroll street – see if you can get a table outside. Have a smoke, a snack, and watch the passerbys. Re-evaluate your evening. Union Hall – they must have some good PR because the one positive thing I’ve heard about the place is that it is the only place anyone has ever heard of. It’s huge, two full sized botche ball courts that you won’t get a game on, downstairs, bands, patio. It’s a meat market full of assholes. I hear nothing but bad things. Ok…. you’re drunk… I’m done.

dram bar is cool. And, head to Park Slope Ale House to chat with the bartender. She'll make your friend laugh and call him honey, if nothing else!
