I was walking along 7th Ave. yesterday (Friday) around noon when I came to the intersection of Union Street. Suddenly a little boy about 3 to 4 years old, riding a scooter quite fast, came rolling off the sidewalk into the street. Just by luck no car was coming. A woman who appeared to be his Nanny went into the street and carried the boy back to the sidewalk and put the boy into the empty stroller she was pushing. She was a black woman around 40-45. I think she may have been wearing a red hat and dark coat. The woman didn't say anything to the boy that I heard and they continued along 7th Ave. in the direction of Flatbush Ave. I am hoping that the parents find out about this before something terrible happens to their child.

Too early to call her negligent.

      apologies to John Bradford.

Every time I read about some kid who has been crushed or run over I have at least one nightmare memory about each of my kids.

There is a site called "I Saw Your Nanny" and it might be a good idea for you to bring it up and do a posting. You have enough details where the parents might spot it. That is basically the reason for the existence of the site.

Children usually know to stop at the curb. Better is to teach them to stop at the property line or the building line, before they cross the sidewalk. I've witnessed near misses or worse with others on wheels or pedestrians at the intersection of sidewalks - not to mention overshooting the curb. It worked when my kids were flying on the Big Wheels.

i've seen much worse happen with actual *parents* around.

absolute vigilance is impossible and things happen even with adults who are being careful. i would encourage folks to not be so quick to condemn others - especially nannies who are so often underpaid and overworked. geez, that smacks a little of classism (and racial profiling) to say the least.

Not to mention, I'm sure had the kids parents been stopping him at the corners regularly, he would not have ridden his scooter into the street. I've seen a lot of "the help" get their ears talked off for saying no to kids or setting boundaries. Some of the women simply follow what the parents do and allow the child complete freedom.

You don't know what the circumstance are or the dynamics between the caregiver and the family are, so its a little presumptuous to assume that this woman was being derelict in her duties.

It's ridiculous to assume that any 3 year old would have the judgement to stop at a corner - many do not, and it has nothing to do with the parenting or nannying he gets. That's why you don't let them scooter anywhere near the corner without you at his side.

The fact that the Nanny was attending to a stroller and therefore could not keep pace with the little boy is a recipe for disaster. That is the reason I felt that the Nanny was negligent.

Does any one know the difference between a nanny and a baby sitter.

I understand.. but wondering if other people who are responding do understand.

      Are you a parent?

I hate those I saw your nanny posts. Kids run all the time and I am so sick of community boards of predominantly white folks spying on mostly hard working caribbean women. Parents should be checking up on their own caregivers to see if they do a good job.

Not that it gives me more or less privilege to have an opinion but I am a parent and have 4 grandchildren. Two of them are being raised in PS so I have become part of the current "stroller brigade". .

The few times I did go on that I saw your nanny site there were also positive sighting of "good " nannies but inherent in any site like that one there is racial untertow.

I don't think you can see a very brief encounter between a child and a caretaker and conclude that they are "negligent". I would bet money that all of us did something similar as children under our parents' care and that most of our parents were not negligent.

Best advice. Teach your own children rules when you are out with them.

IMHO, this all seems pretty judgmental and weirdly passive aggressive.

Taking care of kids is a tough job. I don't know anyone who can do it perfectly.

I wonder why a person would use a website or message board to indirectly scold / slander a person they don't even know? Seems to me, if a person felt so strongly, they could have tried speaking to the nanny directly.

Live and let live. Just my two cents.

edited to clarify: the thread title and the I Saw Your Nanny thing seem judgmental, not all comments on the thread.

Geez the last thing I meant to say or imply is my judging anyone or anyone or anything.

I politely bow out of this thread.
