SO excited. Just spoke to one of the owners Tim Judge who opened and ran Toby's Public House until just last week. He told me that his partner Eric Wolf and him are opening a wood fired classic american cuisine restaurant. Very kid friendly, as he just had his first baby last week. They will be doing lunch as well with belgium fries in duck fat, yum and pressed sandwiches. He also let me know that forty weight coffee, a roaster from upstate will be opening a cafe right inside the restaurant. sounds like they got their demographics all figured out. i am very excited!!!
      good luck guys.

As per wikipedia, a shill or plant is a person who helps another person or organization to sell goods or services without disclosing that he or she has a close relationship with the seller. The shill pretends to have no association with the seller/group and gives onlookers the impression that he or she is an enthusiastic independent customer. The person or group that hires the shill is using crowd psychology, to encourage other onlookers or audience members (who are unaware of the set-up) to purchase the said goods or services.

Full disclosure, I run Here's Park Slope, and I've said that a couple times in the past.

      Slopefoodie, your turn.

I live around the corner and have spoken to the guys a few times and eaten at Tobys.
They were nice guys and the place sounds great. I'm simply blogging in a public forum about public things. Even if I was connected the information from what I gathered is accurate. Isnt that the point of this forum?

If you are connected then you should disclose the connection. Otherwise, you'd be shilling.

      Slopefoodie-
One is often suspected of being a shill when one's first post on a message board is a glowing review (or hype) of a new business.

Said shills then often disappear, because they have only one interest (advertising a business), and it has been fulfilled. At a deeper, cosmic, groovy level, the term "shill" can be contrasted with the term "member", which is one who post about things on a message board without any self serving profit motive.

All of which begs the questions:

Slopefoodie, do you understand why your first post may have made us wonder about your motivations?

Slopefoodie, do you understand that sometimes shilling does more harm than good for a business? ....especially when done under the guise of a "random neighbor" as opposed to honestly disclosing vested interests?

Slopefoodie, are you really sharing this out of "excitement", or with the hope of getting customers? ....everyone loves a new restaurant, but few of us love them enough to join a msg board proclaiming our excitement when it opens.

Now for self disclosure. I'm glad Park Slope is getting yet another restaurant, and hope the business does well, but I caution you that shills often do their businesses more harm than good, by coming here and treating their potential customers as if they have the intelligence of a worm.

If you are a new member, welcome!

If you have a interest in the business you are posting about, now is a good time to disclose that!

...we don't hold honesty against people.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

This space has been vacant for so many years. After speaking with the owners several different times they seemed really nice and the place sounds great. My only interest here is to stop walking past a beautiful space that has been nothing for years and have a beer and some good food. I have always read this forum and decided to finally post something. I didn't realize that everyone is a moderator. If my posting offends you all so much please tell me how to delete it and know that you all flexing your blog muscles have scared this first time poster away from posting again.

    12. Wait- shouldn't we be continuing this bickering over at the new FIPS forums??

Thank you for your honesty and I extend a heartfelt welcome!

....please excuse my initial suspicion as being formed from less honorable people than yourself posting on these boards.

P.S. Please don't make me look like a gullible sucker.

      Thank you.
I understand and see your point clearly. However I would think as a new poster that has always read these forums that something new and exciting would be needed to make people like me post and maybe lashing out so fast is a bad tactic. Just my two cents. It seems now that what was a nice intentioned post is filled with not so nice things which also could be harmful to a restaurant.
Especially done under the guise of a well intentioned long term users who want only the right thing done in these forums.

You are not a gullible sucker. Thank you for explaining your point of view.

      Whyfi-
While I will not accept your bet, I will make Slopefoodie an offer:

If (over the course of the next 2 months) Slopefoodie posts at least 20x on random topics other than this restaurant, I will buy him/her a round.

Note, the posts must be spread out over the next 2 months, they can't all be posted in the next five days.

Whyfi, will you join me in buying slopefoodie a round under the above circumstances?

A good point, but I feel the ball is already in his/her court.

Whyfi I have never been exposed to this shilling thing or maybe haven't read into much thinking it was a forum that didn't have real content. Like this one now unless people's intentions to find out about this new restaurant really are to get a lesson on betting, shilling and forgiveness.

      Whyfi (and readers at large)-

I'm kinda curious about what my legal obligations would have been in the event she accepted the above contract.

For example, if slopefoodie had accepted our offer, could she have insisted that the beer be from Sweetwolfs?

What if she have appeared from the kitchen to claim her beers?

If she had done this, would we still have been obligated to follow thru on our offer?

Despite Whyfi's advice, I have stated that I believe you.

But, now we've moved on from you and Sweetwolfs. We are now talking (in a general sense) about the potential legal obligations stemming from contracts on the web. I.E. Under what circumstances can a party be defaulted for breach of contract?

Is anyone bored enough to get on LexisNexis to take a stab at citing relevant case law?

Forget buying each other drinks. We need a PS Message Board drinking game.

Every time a brand new poster posts a HAY GUYS CHECK OUT THIS GREAT NEW PLACE post, drink a beer.

Everytime the brand new poster, hurt, denies shilling, drink a beer.

Every time someone goes into a vein-popping righteous rage about the fact that people drive cars, drink a beer.

Every time someone tells another poster to "go back to ____________" (the suburbs, Ohio, Pennsyltucky, etc), drink a beer.

If the person telling someone to "go back to the suburbs" is actually a recent transplant from the suburbs themselves, chase the beer with a shot.

If the person being told to "go back to the suburbs" is actually a native New Yorker/Brooklynite, add another shot.

      Etc.

i blame such comments on boredom and drinkng, this is why we need more green spaces

I'm surprised that no one has told the story of this space.

This is the space where a woman lived. When she died, her son dressed up as her so he could claim her social security checks. He did this for years. The whole crazy scheme fell apart when he went to sell the building.

I like the way your response meshes with your .sig line.

No, if I were trying to kill you with alcohol poisoning, I would've suggested that we all...

...knock back a PBR every time someone bitches about hipsters

...drink a few dainty, appreciative sips of an artisanal small-batch organic potato vodka every time a fight about the Co-Op breaks out

...down a draft pitcher of Bud at Jackie's 5th Amendment every time someone starts in on, "You think it's bad now? Let me tell you about the old days...."

This is pretty unique- they're soliciting menu item suggestions on their Facebook page. If you have an idea for a "classic American" dish that you would like to see on their menu, just go over and suggest it. If it's chosen, you'll get an invite to an open bar soft open event where you'll have the opportunity to try it and help them tweak it until it's right.

Pretty cool, and a great way to connect to the neighborhood!
