did anyone else notice all the trees down in the park today? not just branches, i am talking huge hundreds year old trees blocking the entire street of the loop and one which apparently crashed through and took over all of third street playground! i hope no one was hurt!

Soaked ground+high winds. I saw at least 4 entire large trees down, some uprooted completely some split. Plenty of branches as well. Not uncommon with these conditions. Some trees and especially branches were probably already weak from the snow and ice, which took out a few trees and branches and had many branches really sagging. There's still sawdust in spots from where they cleaned up the casualties of the snow+wind a few weeks ago.

Some pictures from the park.

Yeah, I noticed it too - purely by accident. Was walking back from Kensington. And it wasn't just the park - it was all over. Houses and cars were, for the most part, very lucky. Heard sirens all night and had a hard time sleeping; now, knowing what I know, I am not surprised.

I found some more pics here http://thetinyaccordion.com/2010/03/14/trees-fall-in-brooklyn-prospect-park-after-the-storm/

I checked out the 3rd St. playground this morning and got there just as the clearing crew arrived. Two trees in the lot! It looked line the farther out one fell and took out the closer one as they both crashed in to the playground. I think I counted 8 downed trees today and many other that are likely damaged to the point that they will just be removed.

Saw this posted elsewhere on Brooklynian. 50 trees down! http://www.prospectpark.org/about/press/storm_damage_info?o5943=

I got an email yesterday from the alliance talking about how bad the damage is, and how they are already low on funds.

I just got off the phone with the Volunteer Office (718) 965-8960 ยท They can use more than $, they also need help. You can join them Wednesday from 11am to 2 pm at the entrance to park by Flatbush, Ocean and Empire. That is near where I took the pictures on Monday http://whatyourdonotknowbecauseyouarenotme.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-can-see-forest-for-lack-of-trees.html I would recommend calling first so they have enough tools and stuff.[/code]Don't get me started
