Who knew? Apparently they tried to keep their involvement super-secret, but designed the space and forced the founders to keep the case fully stocked, which led to a lot of waste.
And when they got fed up, they pulled the plug. They still own the space, and have no clue what to do with it.

I'm sorry to see a small business close, but to be honest the cupcakes were not good at all and extremely over priced.

No wonder why the filling on the cupcakes tasted like Crest.

Ricky's didn't force them to make crappy cupcakes...

That story boils down to "we admit we made crappy cupcakes and had crappy service AND Ricky's was mean to us! Anyone want to be nice to us and our crappy cupcakes?"

If Ricky's still has the lease and equipment, I wish they'd set someone else up who actually knew what they were doing. Why didn't The King of Cupcakes people hire A GOOD BAKER and a food service manager to run the kitchen and train people when personal circumstances pulled their original group apart? Sheesh.

In other sweet tooth news, there is a phenomenally good pie shop on 3rd Ave around 7th or 8th St. close to Bell House. I had a slice of the best apple pie evvvvvvah - "salted caramel apple pie" which sounds - excuse the expression - tarted up but is something your dream grandma baked when you were a kid in some fictional land of perfect desserts.

Sure the pie shop is Four & Twenty Blackbirds...a local favorite.

I want a real cupcake place in the old "king" spot. Some people hate Magnolia but I love their stuff.

Magnolia makes decent cupcakes. It's the hordes of Sex-and-the-City obsessed tourists that make their places intolerable.

Billy's Cupcakes (an offshoot of Magnolia) in Chelsea is delicious.

8th hand I so agree with you. One of those warmer weekend days we ventured to Magnolia for a mid Sunday afternoon snack and it was so warm the garden was opened. (Quick.. wash down the chairs) i swear there was no one in the place that actually lived here!! Why does that offend me? Anyway, the sweets were delicious!

That little coffee/pastries place next to the new-ish soup place around 7th ave & 9th st usually has Robicelli's cupcakes. I'll take those over most.

Try the Robicelli's "spicy panda" if you ever see it - I'm quite proud to say it's named after me

The soup place reverted this week to an Uncle Louie G's ice cream, unless there's two soup places on that block.

I could have gone for some of that soup today. I wonder how many people are getting Italian ice with the wind chill at 22. I'm convinced people here only have a 300 day memory. They always think it gets warm in March, when it doesn't get warm until May.

As long as they're not made of delicious panda.
