having friends in town and trying to find them a local, fun spot for brunch. (they are not very mobile, so south-ish slope is the area)

i've come up with dizzys and steinhof. other suggestions welcome!

I don't know what makes a brunch "fun", but you can't beat the food at Applewood.

      It is expensive, though.

Sidecar (5th ave betw. 15th, 16th) started serving a delicious brunch fairly recently, too. http://www.sidecarbrooklyn.com/food.html (My friends operate it, but I'm also just really fond of the place.)

Bar Toto is hit or miss, imo. Some days it's decent service and tasty food, others we've had some of the worst service in the neighborhood and pretty much everything ordered by 3 people was wrong (and I think the servers were the same as when we had decent service), but if it's the closest one to home, it's worth a shot if you've got plenty of time.

Would dim sum be acceptable? Harbor Seafood Palace on 714 65th St (between 7th Ave & 8th Ave) is pretty good. Especially if you have a car or can get a cab. And they're ground level. And even though they get crowded, they seem to have a very quick rotation. so the wait shouldn't be more than 10 minutes.

if applewood is too expensive, then sidecar will be iffy. for cheap and good 'fun,' i'd suggest der kommissar.

I LOVE Dizzy's brunch. I have been there no fewer than 10-15 times and have not been disappointed. They always have great specials. They are a bit on the expensive side though (expect $15 per person without an alcoholic beverage) and be warned it is cash only.

If you're looking for something a little different, Fonda does a really good mexican style brunch (their huevos rancheros is great!)

I think Steinhof is honestly only ok for brunch if you're looking for breakfast-type food. If you're looking for classic brunch food like omelets or pancakes for an inexpensive price, Purity and Little Purity both do an ok job.

I'm kinda anti-diner for out of town guests so...Fonda would be my pick of these. Unique, very yummy food, and all the entrees come with a drink iirc.

For cheaper - if south south slope is okay, Korzo on 5th Ave around 19th or 20th has unlimited mimosas/bloody marys for $8. Cheap unlimited drinks = fun to me! It is a pretty low-key spot, and unique food as well. Get the custard-dipped fried bread thing with bananas and nutella. mmm

Oh yeah, almost forgot - Piramide is pretty good. I've never been there for brunch, though - didn't even know they had it. I've gone a couple of times with friends, tableside guac is good and our meals always seemed to have very fresh ingredients (when you're getting a veggie burrito this is a big deal, frozen mixed vegetable burrito sucks, ugh hard cauliflower). It isn't Fonda (nor is it the more-authentic feeling but less veg-friendly Tacos Nuevo Mexico) but it gets the job done and the staff is always nice.

Giovannis at the corner of 8th and Prospect is amazing and cheap all-around. There is nothing more than 11.95 on their dinner menu and you get a two course brunch with coffee/tea/juice AND unlimited booze for 16.95. This place opened in November and they are packed most nights and during brunch. I have literally seen people waiting outside when I come home from work at like 7:00, and this is not a high traffic area, and there is really no internet buzz either. Go figure...

Though his rants seem nonsensical to most passersby, some astute listeners say they contain evidence of higher learning.
