I'm on 8th Avenue and 1st street and there is very strong smell of smoke. Fire trucks have been driving by every 5 minutes. Anyone know what's going on and where the fire is?

from new jersey? wow. that was awful. i was having trouble breathing on 4th ave. in brooklyn. must have been some fire.

At around 2:30 am I had to close my windows because the smell was awful. Did that remind anyone else of the smell in the days following Sept 11, 2001? It was that terrible smell of burning plastic and other things that need not be mentioned. Bad flashback.

I had just come home from rushing my mother to NY Hospital and i swore that there was some kind of underground cable fire in the 4 ave/ atlantic to like carrol street area.. that was bad

If you subscribe to Notification NYC, you would have received either an e-mail or a telephone text about the fire in Jersey City. That is what greeted me when I woke up, so when I walked out my President Street door and smelled smoke, I knew where it was coming from. You can register for free by going to Notify NYC via Google. I have no financial interest in this site.

Notify NYC is a great idea, but they drove me crazy all summer with their notifications of high "heat index" days and announcements that cooling centers were open. I'd get these several times a week, to the point where I started not bothering to check the Notify NYC calls. It's hot out, really? NO DUH, Notify NYC! They also sent a tornado warning timed to conveniently coincide with the departure of the tornado from Brooklyn. Still some kinks to be ironed out, I guess.i blame such comments on boredom and drinkng, this is why we need more green spaces

No, actually I live on this block, and apparently someone smelled smoke in or near one of the brownstones so a bunch of fire trucks came and they extended a ladder up to the roof and were looking around but I dont think they found anything and left shortly afterwards.
