Just a thread about storefront changes. 5th Ave between 12/13th, the permits say a laundromat is going in. 5th Ave and 10th an art gallery opened recently. 6th Ave and 14th st (?) across from Athena, Slope's Bistro looks about ready to open. 6th Ave and 7th St. (old Bohdi Tree spot). They are still working and it looks like they are making progress on the cafe. There are a couple of comfy looking booths in there so far. More?
-
the slope's bistro spot looks random. anyone know when bar tini is open? and got some takeout from the new istanbul place a few weeks back. it was solid.
-
what/where is bar tini?
-
it's in the old pumpkin's space. same owners as bar toto
-
ah, yes. I am pretty sure it's open
-
there is a coming soon sign for 'the laundry store' on 4th ave at carroll or so.
-
That place on 6th ave and 7th st was, as of about 3 weeks ago, having issues with the liquor license. The owner is around the block all the time and I've spoken to him quite a few times and it's still a GO although slowwwwly.whoa hey whoa hey whoa

Is there a new pet store on 7th Avenue near the video rental film forum place?I blame such comments on beer.

If you're talking about the spot near the big grocery store, then yes. I think the name is Beastly Bite. Pretty big space. -
There's a for rent sign on the corner of 6th Ave and 12th St, across from Magnolia. Anyone know what that used to be? Any clue if it'll be rented anytime soon? I really hope something good comes there, but I don't know if it's a store or a restaurant. Also I think Slope's Bistro is going to last, oh, 5 minutes.
-
That used to be a foreclosure mess involving counter-claims, cross dressing and ingesting the soul of a dead parent. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/06/17/ny.mother.impersonation/index.html Before that, I have no idea. But I'd absolutely love to see a nice mini-market there with some fresh produce. I'm wondering if the landlord is even planning on retail on the ground level, though...seems like he'd want to remove that tall iron fence first.
-
What besides retail could go in there?
-
7th Ave and 8th ST just noticed the cabinet shop is gone and there's a "for rent" sign in the window. They've been working like crazy in that weird spot on 6th/12th. Last time I looked in, the 1st floor is surely meant for retail since it didn't look partitioned at all for living. I kind of like that spot with the tall fence and plants that used to cover it.
-
Subject: Bar Tini (actually Provini) on 13th st. and 8th Ave.
Why wife and I have been doing a lot of sleuthing on Bar Tini (actually Provini). Mostly because we live so close, but also because the place has been done but not open for at least a month of two. Apparently the community boards have been fighting their liquor license being that it is across the street from a school (It's on 8th Ave and 13th Street). We heard they were going to try and open without the license, but no idea what they would actually sell...water I suppose. The staff also supposedly pressured the owner into changing the name from Bar Tini to Provini because they didn't want to have to open a martini bar at the establishment. -

Either way, I hope something opens there soon, whatever it is. -
Thanks for the update, bradedward. That's totally bogus that the CB is fighting it, given the owners' other 2 restaurants are family favorites w/in the 'hood. That strip of 8th Ave is a little sad, and it's a pity the own community is fighting what would probably bring a little vibrancy.
-
But think of all the elementary-age drinking that will take place! Those entitled Park Slope kids can afford $12 lychee-tinis without batting an eye.

What's the logic? That kids's will skip school and hit the bar? On another note, is Hanabi, the Japanese restaurant on the corner of 7th Avenue and Garfield officially dead? They had a great lunch special. Not too far away from Hanabi's space is what used to be Elementi.I blame such comments on beer.

Looks like a new bar is opening on 16th and 5th. Been there for a while but little by little getting there. Someone in the neighb had said they were waiting for the liquor license.WE MAKE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE! THE GRAND PROSPECT HALL!
-
10 in bologna? Um. Yes, black horse pub but they failed the electrical inspection and the next one will be august 19.
-
from what i understand the hanabi space is being turned into a wine bar. and part of it is becoming a new chicken place, which is already coming along....
-
Work has started on the space that used to be the original Minnow Rest. I'm told that it will be a bakery/cafe with outdoor space used both in the front and the back yard.
-
i thought minnow was where flipsters is?
-
The original Minnow was on 9th Street, just a tad around the corner. On 5th Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets replacing the realtor will now be Tribeca Pediatrics, I believe the sign also says something about gyno/ob , can't remember now.
-
new2hood » i thought minnow was where flipsters is?
I am confused too. I thought Flipsters, the former burger bar was actually two storefronts and the one on the right as you stand on 9th street was minnows. perhaps that was Minnow's second location or am I confusing restaurants. I am willing to be wrong. -
there was a Minnow and a Bar Minnow I believe. The first one opened in a store on 9th Street just under from where that used CD and tape store used to be (Holy Cow?). then, another opened at that corner location which is now Flipsters, does that make sense? oh, and veets, I always thought you named yourself after the shaving cream, but, after reading soemthign this weekend, I get it now, LOL
-
Minnow definitely started on 9th. Then they expanded into the Flipster space as Bar Minnow. Before it was Bar Minnow, the space on 7th was a falafel place. I can't remember the name right now, but it was light blue with some moroccan-inspired tile
-
years ago there was a bar there called the Alamo....
-
The middle eastern place on that site was called Fava. My daughter used to like their chicken. Also worth noting is that sometime a wine bar will be opening on 6th between 11th and 12th in the space where Hennepin Printers used to be.
-

Oo where did you hear about this winebar?whoa hey whoa hey whoa -
yay! more wine bars! seriously....there can never be too much wine
-
In going past the place about a month ago there was a window display with a sign saying that a wine bar will open there soon.
-

I pm'ed you

I hope this winebar sells food too.

Did the Swedish Kafe that was in Oak's old space near 5th avenue close?
-
Someone at Chickadee today told me they think they will open in 1-2 weeks.

yes -
I just noticed Pink Pussycat (5th btw 4/5th) and the Used Record Store (5th btw 8/9th) are both shuttered.
-
the used record store is moving 2 doors down next to bloom. and the person who owned pink pussycat i believe died last year. i think it's been closed up a while.

pitu »
Did the Swedish Kafe that was in Oak's old space near 5th avenue close?
yes
Weird joint no way that was gonna last. Though I did see Maggie Gylennhal (sic) there. -
What about the spot that used to be Circles/Windsor Chophouse in Bartel Pritchard Square? It seems like it's been well over a year since they closed. At first there seemed to be regular work and I heard some buzz that it was going to become a sports bar. Then I heard there was a big landlord-tenant debacle. Not sure what's true, but it's a shame to see such a prime location going to waste...Though his rants seem nonsensical to most passersby, some astute listeners say they contain evidence of higher learning.

Hudson Cleaners on 7th and 11th has a big for rent sign over it, but still seems to be in business...anyone know anything?

I loved the Alamo. One day they were just gone
I will always remember the Alamo. One day I was drinking there with a bunch a mathematicians and they messed up the tip calculation. The waitress ran after us wanting to know what she did to offend us. We gave her an extra 20 to atone for our gaffe. The lesson is to never trust anyone with a PhD in math to do arithmetic. My recollection is that a rent dispute led to the Alamo's demise. -

I heard some Mexicans took it over. Sorry for the above. Good story about the PhDs. -

No, but I just came to post about cleaners. The corner spot on 8th st and 7th ave where the Cabinet place was, across the street from a cleaners, is going to be a cleaners according to workers in the store. There is a also a new cleaners right next to the old La Bagel Delight place on 7th ave and 5th st which still has not been rented. Course I can't imagine many people wanting to be across from John Jay. Are dry cleaners becoming the new phone store? -
That is a lot of new dry cleaners around............
