I'm sorry to see Catene closing. It was a real neighborhood fixture but their erratic hours and not being opened when their sign said they would be opened discouraged repeat business, no matter how much I enjoyed their stuff in the past. I go to a place once that says they will be opened from w to y and they are closed, I get a negative feeling, I try to go again to get some calamari and plan my route to make their posted hours and they are closed again, I never go back.

This applies to many Slope business, not just ones that are posted as closed in this thread. My personal peeve is not being opened when your sign says you will be there. If I am making an effort to shop local, do me the courtesy of opening or closing when your sign says you will be there.

If my local drugstore says they will be open at 9, I don't want to have to wait outside in the cold until the owner decides to arrive 45 minutes later. If your threading salon says you will be open until 8 pm, why do I come to your storefront at 7 and the lights are out and the place is closed for the day?

Reader... I totally agree with what you said about Catene and other local businesses as well. Retail is a hard business but when you post your hours that has to be a commitment to your customers to be open for those hour. When I look at my history with Catene... that goes back 30 years there were many times when they were posted as open till 3pm and when I went there at 2;15 they had closed. If something like that happens once it can be ok but for sure that is the reason why over the last years they were not a go to place for me.

Why are we condensing all the openings/closings discussions into a single thread? I, for one, prefer individual posts for each place. Makes contributing and reading a LOT easier, IMHO.

What is a #Why Buy Gold" store? If it is what I think it is such a place was actually part of another store right there!Any one remember the kind of Hippie/head shop boutique callled Shop Therapy? part of the store was occupied by a Gold Exchange business.. right in the from left when you entered the space.

Yeah, there's a "We Buy Gold" Pawnshop/Jewelry store/something? Opening on 9th St between 5th/6th Ave.

Spotless Cleaners on 7th Av between 9th and 10th Street is closed.

The MIM newstand on 7th off 9th Street Avenue near Bank of American has been renovated, seems to have a new owner. He has greatly increased the amount of cold cases with a big emphasis on imported beer. You can still get your lotto tickets etc, but the beverege selection seems to be way above the average corner store.

Opposum Q told me about this one: Bob and Judy's antiques/vintage shop on 5th ave near Union is closing. They have a 20% off sale going on.

Also that burger place "chez burger" that was supposed to open in the fro-yo spot, on 5th ave by the V-Spot, didn't. It's for rent again.

WHAT??? I love that place! One of the most nicely curated vintage/antique shops around. And Bob and Judi are so nice. Damn. How long have they been there?

There's also a "We Buy Gold" counter in the barber shop that opened recently on 5th Ave between St Mark's Place and Warren (West side of avenue). No customers for either.
