Passed by the old Firefly shop on 7th between 4th and 5th and saw a coming soon sign for "The King of Cupcakes." Has anyone heard anything about this place? Their web site wasn't too informative other than the store will be "featuring Aunt Butchies famous cupcakes."
-
It's about time PS got a cupcake shop. I hoped they're good and not made with shortening that makes the frosting all greasy. I'm looking at you recently closed French bakery that was once next to Smiling Pizza.
-
Did that French bakery close? They had AMAZING brownies, and the almond croissants were good, also.
-
They had a great flourless chocolate cake too but the windows are all papered over so something is going on.

I was intrigued by that sign too so I looked it up and found they have a "shop" in a pizzeria in Chelsea and I found their online store: http://www.auntbutchiescupcakes.com/Shop/ Seems like mostly Italian-based cupcakes? -
French bakery? The one next to the stationery shop that sells moldy blueberry muffins? Yeah, won't be missed.
-
i like the cupcakes at little buddy, though i guess that's more s. slope than pk slope.
-
It sells cupcakes. Cupcakes are good. How much more do you need to know? I'm still waiting for the end-all-be-all store for Park Slope: An environmentally conscious real estate agent that sells cell phones and sushi.

Went this weekend with some people I was able to try a Vailla, Red Velvet and Pumpkin Spice cupcake and I can say that they were all terrible. One of the worst cupcakes I have ever had at a "gourmet" cupcake shop. The cake was way too thick, too dry and too crumbly and tasted like it was made from a Duncan-Hines box. The icing was also quite bland in all cases. I was very disapointed and IMO there is no way these cupcakes are worth what they are priced at.
-
bummer. i'm gonna give it a shot and I hope that I feel differently, but i'm not gonna go in with much confidence after that initial report...

Hey listen go for it....taste is very subjective...hopefully you love it! -
scott, have you ever gotten a Robicelli's cupcake from Blue Apron? If not, I bet you would like it.

Yes, I think the one's I have tried are great. However, I am not really a fancy cupcake guy, I just like mine vanilla/vanilla and Robicelli's doesn't seem like they ever offer things plain like that. -
This thread reminds me of Connecticut Muffin where I've had some of the worst muffins ever and gave up on them long ago. How can a place with the word Muffin in its name make such pathetic muffins? Can it really be that hard to make a decent muffin (or cupcake for that matter), its basically a hunk of cake (or cake with frosting). Hope the cupcake place is better but I'm sticking with my 99ยข Twinkies and Yodels for now.
-
If you're looking for good baked goods, try Grumpy. Their chocolate chip banana bread is a mind-blower. Scones are great too.
-
Or if you are in the mood for something french & fancy, try Almondine (9th st at 7th ave) The two best items are the macaroons (the parisian cookie kind) and the baguette

Sadarami » How can a place with the word Muffin in its name make such pathetic muffins?
i think that this is an interesting question. to me the answer is in the level of expectation that people walk through the door with. when you have a business specializing in the cupcake, people expect to be blown away by your cupcake. and while it might be difficult not to at least make a decent cupcake, it's even more difficult to make one that is going to meet some ridiculously high expectations. and that's as it should be, or everyone would have their own cupcake shop. in fact, that might be part of the problem. with the recent proliferation of cupcake/cake television shows and a booming consumer market for such things, there are probably people getting into the cupcake/cake business who don't have much skill to back their venture. -

That's too bad. Maybe they need to get settled first although I doubt it. Did you or anybody else try the Cupcake truck in front of Barnes and Noble? -
I've been to the truck and just had a basic chocolate with vanilla frosting. Not great IMO but I love the vanilla buttercream frosting at Magnolia and I know some people who hate it.

Blue Sky bakery makes the best muffins!

I had the "Hostess" cupcake for $3.00. The entire thing fit in my mouth so it was basically $3 bucks a bite. And this was the small. The prices just go up from there. It wasn't anything amazing. This was just before closing time and they has cases of uneaten cupcakes. What happens to all of those? I'd say with the low cupcake turnover, four employees with no-one in the store, overpriced/unexceptional cupcakes, and the high overhead this place is not going to last long. Why can't something like Sugar Sweet Sunshine or Magnolia open here? Simple vanilla/chocolate combos with a few daily specials. No one needs to spend ten minutes trying to figure out what cupcake they want.
-
Looks like I'll be sticking to Blue Apron for my cupcake fix, because this place is the definition of mediocre. Between Parkslope Eatery or whatever that place across the street from Radio Shack is and this place, I see some more empty storefronts for 7th in the near future. Shame, as I was excited for both. Curious to try that new soup place near the subway though.

Personally I'm a fan of Downtown Atlantic's (DTA) cupcakes and desserts. While not located in Park Slope they are well worth the walk. The chocolate cupcakes are always moist and their buttercream is much lighter than the average buttercream. My favorite is the carrot cake cupcake where their cream cheese frosting has another depth of flavor that other cream cheese frostings seem to lack. One small fault is their vanilla base cupcakes. Personally I think it's slightly less moist than their chocolate, however not overly dry to where I would call it "crumbly". While I believe DTA has the best tasting cupcakes in a four-neighborhood radius, I think their value is superb: $2.50-$3 for their double-size cupcakes. My wife often split a cupcake between us. No I don't work there, I just eat a crap-load of cupcakes.

I happen to love Ladybird's cupcakes. Will not chance a bad cupcake at King of Cupcakes when I know that Ladybird is closer and guaranteed to be delicious.
-
Does Ladybird still have the "Brooklyn Blackout" cupcake? Chocolate with chocolate pudding inside with a chocolate butter cream frosting and sprinkles? Two Red Hens used to have it.
I also agree the Downtown Atlantic's cupcakes are great. Their "Hostess" version is a million times better at the same price as the King's.

Oh I wish I didn't know that.

I love all the support for a new, local business.
-
Are we obligated to support businesses that serve a crappy product? Sotto Voce is a local business too, and their owners might be the nicest people in the world, but since I find their food disgusting, I won't spend my money there. I think that this "all local businesses are sacred" philosophy is really over the top. Everything being equal I am so happy to shop at say, Save on Fifth rather than Target, but I don't feel that anyone should purposely buy inferior products for any reason.
