So, who's finally seen a plow? I know some of you people had to go to work this morning, how are the main drags (5th ave? 7th ave? PPW?) Any new buses blocking intersections? For that matter, anyone even SEE a bus running?

I'm completely shocked and dismayed that the sides streets haven't seen a plow once. Not only that, but I haven't even heard a plow rumbling down 7th Ave. I've never seen it this bad.
Must not be an election year.

Not in PS, but the situation can't be any different - on the dog walk this morning, I saw:
A) a street that had been half plowed - the going evidently got too tough for the plow, so it reversed in the middle of a long block and got out while it could.
B) a plow, unattended and stuck in an intersection. That's always a good sign...
...not that there's anything wrong with that. -
I saw a plow going through 7th Ave today around 845am... around 16th St...
Problem is there are still a bunch of cars in the middle of the road abandoned.... so that isnt gonna help anything...

Though 5th ave is plowed, the plowed snow banks created a knee high mountain not allowing anyone use the crosswalks or intersections.. Seriously no paths to cros the street or avenues. You would think the storefronts on those corners would shovel a path so people can cross and reach their store.
And Shame on Dos Pollitos for still not shoveling their sidewalks!

In case you thought Queens was somehow "magically" better off ...I give you this shot just taken.
One can see that Jamaica Ave is well plowed, but the nearby side street is not. One can see that the side street is a bus route by seeing the large dead bus blocking the road.
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Oh, and the mayor's street is the only one in Manhattan that is plowed? And its not because its a bus route right?

I understand why they needed to make sure Bloomberg's street was plowed.. Because he needed to be driven around the City so he could see with his own eyes all the streets that are not plowed!

Bloomberg lives in an affluent area of MANHATTAN,
Brooklyn is the messed up one.He even said yesterday that the numbered trains (the ones that go to his side of town, btw) in Manhatttan are running with some delays but the trains to Brooklyn (lettered) were suffering service delays, streets were delayed plowing and people should stay home. Unless you are a tourist in Manhatan proper and then you should walk to the broadway shows, they will be open, weeeee!

I lived with an elderly parent who needed medical treatment several times per week. In good weather he would either take public transportation, drive himself, or take a cab depending on how he felt on a particular day. In weather like this it would have been impossible for him to do any of those things. I imagine he would have opted to drive as the best bet for getting there and back with no hiccups.
People need to stop acting as if EVERY person driving is some jackalope out tooling around on their day off. Some of these people actually NEED to get somewhere and unfortunately the mayor isn't doing enough to make it easy for these folks to use other options. If one can't walk to a subway or bus because of impeded crosswalks, streets that have not been dug out, or bus stops full of snow what should be done?

I don't buy the rich hood poor hood story. Park Slope ain't poor. It's more likely that because the subways go above ground in Brooklyn that this is causing more problems for the subway in Brooklyn.
Personally, I love that they haven't plowed my street. I was out front shoveling and marveled at how I didn't hear car engines, honking or sirens.
Of course when this thing starts to melt it's going to get all kinds of ugly. So enjoy it now.

exactly... i have one senior here that who is a frequent flier to the hospital and another who was rushed into the hospital in NY on monday. its disgusting that the city is in the mess its in after so much time.

I would love to have almost any job. I have a number of skills, most especially as a handy woman with a rather large number of years of experience. (anyone have any jobs I could do for them?) But sadly i do not work for the DOT. Nor am I a spokesperson for the mayors fan club. His business abilities are to be admired, none the least of which include his calm, rational approach to problem solving. For a rich guy he seems pretty down to earth. I don't agree with all of his decisions, especially regarding the Bedford/Atlantic armory, but the storm situation is not all entirely his fault.

As for the lack of plowed streets, does anyone know why they didn't start plowing during the storm? I've never seen them wait till it stopped snowing to send out the plows. Was it because so many workers were away for the holiday? It's not like this was a surprise storm.

I'm amazed by the naiveté (or irrational expectations) on the part of people who somehow expect that after 20 inches of snow and 50mph winds for a day that all roads are somehow supposed to be magically cleared, and driving should be easy.
Do I think an honest post-mortem should be done by city government to figure out what went wrong and what can be done to fix it next time? Sure. But scapegoating gets us nowhere. If mistakes cannot be honestly addressed and solutions determined, why admit mistakes?
Put this in perspective: Everyone's using the benchmark of the 1996 blizzard as a comparison. It took Saint Rudy and his forces the better part of a week to clean up after that storm, and that one didn't crop up on the day after Christmas.
Idiots driving, getting stuck, and abandoning their cars in the middle of major thoroughfares seriously slowed down snow removal. Hell, over by me, there were several garbage truck/plows stuck in the snow that FDNY had to dig out - they had to come back with front-end loaders to clear things - much more time consuming than plows. Is that somehow the fault of DSNY when the snow is that heavy?
The one mistake Bloomberg made was not declaring a state of emergency and closing the roads to all traffic save emergency vehicles.
But hindsight is 20/20. What if they had declared a State of Emergency, shut down the roads, limited bus/train service, etc, and then only 3 inches of snow had fallen? The wags would all be screaming about that mistake too.
Can't have it both ways.

People might notice that the subways still are barely working and the airports are just now kind of getting up and running. The Mayor has no control over them. I'm frustrated by the lack of plowing too, but it's not like this is all the Mayor's fault.

I just want to take a moment to thank all my wonderful neighbors in Park Slope who were out there shoveling yesterday. I walked to and from work yesterday and it was amazing how many people were out there bright and early getting it done. I realize that it is a homeowner's responsibility but that does not mean it is not appreciated!

The airports and the subways, no.
The city streets, whose fault if not the Mayor's? Ultimately, it is his responsibility to make sure the streets of the city are usable.
Just ask former Mayor John Lindsay, who was not reelected because he failed to clear the streets in the outer boros.
Unfortunately, Bloomberg could care less... term limits preclude him from running for another Mayoral term.

@swngnmonk, I don't think anyone's expecting the miracle of having the streets cleared - I'm certainly not. I'm just really amazed that the plows haven't come through my street even once, and that seems to be the case throughout the city. This has never happened during the 7 years I've lived in PS.

I am supposed to head back to park slope tomorrow after christmas vacation
will I be alright getting to 13th street btw 8th and 7th ave. I am going to be fine getting from Penn to F 7th ave train but am concerned about my heavy luggage in streets
i was thinking of pushing my return trip till Monday would any of you?

It's Bloomberg's fault it snowed? I'm sure a mayor seeking reelection would never have allowed that to happen.

That's just silly... No one said the Mayor caused the snowstorm. But it is the Mayor's responsibility to keep the city running, and to make sure that the necessary systems and assets are in place so that the city will keep running, in spite of torrential rains, lightening storms, or serious snowfall.
The Mayor had a reputation a a talented business executive, a technocrat who would get things done. This time he totally blew it.

Am I the only one who loves all this snow?
It's like a massive art installation that blanketed everything in sight in white. It makes the neighborhood look different, sound different, feel different. Sidewalks are flanked by walls of snow. Kids are building snow forts in the middle of the street.

Hated Rudy but the old combover was great in a snow emergency. Bloomster doesn't like kvetching, and Broadway shows are open, and he's going to one, and stop kvetching already or you'll make him late!
On the other hand, it's great to not see a moving car or stroller in sight, if just for two days.

Some idiot wrote on my front glass doors in lipstick. (defacing my property)..CLEAR YOUR WALK!... You must be kidding! Yesterday we did a "narrow" path on the sidewalk but it was passable before 10 AM. This morning we had 4 guys (we paid them) completely clear the frontage. I am not a Rudy fan but I felt like I understood HIS problem for a moment! We did the best we could; we created safe passage... but perfect took an extra day!
Shoot me!
Probably would have happened if the A hole slogged down 9th street again and they were not satisfied with out shoveling job.

Side streets weren't plowed yet (as of this evening), such as 1st, 2nd, etc. I don't know about 13th. It will likely be a struggle in spots.

Clearly, the gov saw the weather forecast and said, it's the holidays - they can just wait till the warm front comes at the end of the week to get rid of the snow via meltage

After CNN did a report from Park Slope about the blizzard, I saw numerous snow plows in the neighborhood this morning, including one following another down my street while another was sitting on 7th Avenue at the corner. 10th Street has been plowed at least three times and salted. And the stuck bus was extracted from the c/o 9th Street and 7th Ave this a.m.

As of 1:34 am Thursday morning, less than half of the blocks in Bed Stuy have been plowed, Nostrand is barely plowed, running one tiny lane at like 2 mph, no B44 bus through here, impossible to call a cab, very difficult to even walk anywhere. On my block there are 2 little stuck buried cars, but then other blocks I just cannot see why they didnt plow. No mail, packages, deliveries, taxis, nothing. I have missed 2 days of work and cancelled everything else for the rest of the year. I will trudge to very local markets to get stuff for New Years meal, but wine is out of the question as I cant get to it, it cant get to me and it is not around here.

blah, blah, blah...i too thought the snow was wonderful. make sure you all stop every once in a while to enjoy life rather than complaining about it. we're not all as important as we think we are.

Some of us do not have the Luxury of being able to stay home, be healthy and not need to visit doctors/hospitals, not have to travel to work, be wealthy enough that a week off is not a big deal, or be Stranded away from home with cancelled flights for 4 days now -stuck just trying to get back home to NYC.

i suspected as much, like i said in many other post, i live pretty close by the one of their depots. in the past they were normally out and about during the snow. but this time they super delay till we got this mess.

Speaker Sheldon Silver is taking a much different view of the NY Post article alleging that certain Sanitation department bosses specifically instructed workers to respond slowly to routes in order to make a point.
During an interview this morning on “Live from the State Capitol with Fred Dicker” on WDGJ, Silver said he didn’t believe the post story. And when asked about talk of criminal charges, he dismissed it as “hyperbole.” Silver attributed the slow clean up to the size of the storm, and the fact that hundreds of sanitation workers have been laid off over the past year.
