A new soup place opened today in the Uncle Louie G space just north of 9th st. It'll only be there until March 1st. Apparently the chef has run a bunch of places in Manhattan.

Just got some soups. I will go back.

Got a corn+roasted peppers that's very tasty and a roasted vegetable that's pretty good. I'm pretty hard to please with soups so I'm happy that I've had two I like from here so far.

I got two "mini" cups and they aren't that tiny, imo. About $5.50 for both. Don't recall the other prices. Friendly service. They had a couple of tiny tables but most people were getting theirs to go.

I was just in there too - we must've just missed each other. I did the same thing - got two minis because it was damn near impossible to choose - everything sounds good. By the way, 8 0z minis are 2.49, 16 oz mediums are 4.99. The big ones are 8.99 and look like a quart.

Got the Corn and Roasted Pepper and the Butternut Squash Lobster Bisque. Wow is my reaction. This stuff is so good and a perfect day for soup. The man is definitely a soup craftsman. Also he's very friendly and will let you sample the soups. I'm definitely going back.

FYI, they don't stay open very late. My bf tried to stop by on his way home last night, around 7:30 and they were closed.

They should do some kind of Soup Bowl Sunday for the Super Bowl, offering huge containers for take-out that day for peoples' home parties or whatever.

That would rule. I love hot soup on cold days, and late January is usually very cold.

      Eh, just a dumb thought.

Of course nothing beats ice cream soup.

Are all of their soups pureed?  Got the Sweet Italian Sausage... was hoping for a nice chunky, wintery style, but instead got thin and watery.  Another concern, as my girlfriend and I were walking home with the soup, we kept smelling a fart in the air... turns out it was THE SOUP!  All things considered, the soup didn't taste too bad (yes I still ate it)... but was underwhelmed.

The roasted vegetable was pretty chunky--it seemed like some of the veggies had cooked to mush (ones that you expect to get mushy), but not pureed.

The corn and pepper seemed a little processed but not pureed.

Actually, he might puree all the soups. I saw him using a massive hand mixer for the soup. That might be why the ones I thought were best were the lobster butternut squash bisque and the potato leek, which are meant to be that consistency. I went back again and one soup I thought was too pureed and would have been better chunky, but was still very good.

One of the daily specials today was "Long Island clam chowder".  I ordered a large (about the size of any other large takeout soup), for $9.00.

The broth was a light tomato-based broth, and it was full of veggies, potato, and clams... not pureed at all.  Quite chunky, very filling and all delicious.

I will be back for more (but not today).

I went back - yet again - and this time tried the Chicken soup with vegetables, and it was not purreed at all. It was great and reminded me of my mom's chicken soup. I will keep going back all winter long.

I also had the chicken with veggies--tasty.  My bf had the clam chowder and the lobster butternut bisque and approved.

I'm excited to have two places for soup now!  Rachel's has brought back their winter soups.  The two that I *love* are the broccoli and the chicken tortilla (best chicken tortilla soup ever).

Had the lobster butternut squash bisque yesterday...amazing! This guy knows what he's doing. He needs to add a Wisconsin Beer Cheese soup...mmm-mmm good.

Cream of Shitake was awesome. Don't forget to look at the soup du jour sign on the left - there are usually about 4 or more up there every day.

I made a pea soup today using the bone and the meat clinging to it from the Thanksgiving Ham. The other ingredients cost me less than $5 for the pot. Add  20 cents for the sprinkle of Grana Padana on each portion. There is enough soup in this pot for at least 20 servings.

I am not arguing with how good this place is but honestly if you cook at all soup is the easiest thing to put together and freeze. Possible exception is creamed soups that should be made in smaller quantities  and eaten right after preparation for best taste..

      just my opinion.

I know what you're saying. There are some things I’ll never order from a place because either it’s too easy and cheap to make at home and/or I can usually make it better than they can – i.e. spag bol or baked salmon. Then there are some things I always leave to the professionals – i.e. sushi, raw oysters and Belgian waffles (I love waffles, but I'm not buying an appliance that makes just one thing that I eat occasionally.)

But I think soups in generally can often be more economical to buy than to make - at least for me. Particularly the labor intensive soups with lots of ingredients and preparation time. Also, and unfortunately, I don’t have lobster or butternut squash or shitake mushrooms in my fridge.

If you have a family making soup makes a lot of sense, but I live alone so 20 servings is a bit much for me. So in my case this works out quite well as I'd rather pay $2.49 for 8 oz of soup than make 8 oz of soup, which is all I really want.

Not that soup is on everyone's mind on a warm day like this, but the Soup Bowl will be leaving at the end of the month - less than two weeks away.

You should. It is my most used appliance besides a coffee pot and a microwave. So good.
