Hi everyone
Where can I find good vegetables? I think Key Food is a little too expensive for me (and I'd really want to make a soup, as the weather basically demands it). I wanted to visit the Farmer's Market yesterday, but it was way too rainy for me. Therefore a substitute is needed. Thanks a bunch!

Every few blocks along 7th / 5th and Flatbush Avenues there are stores that have fruit in bins (often on ice) in front of them. They usually have vegetables inside.
If you need milk, or bread you can find things like that there too.
Don't get me started -
You might want to look into these CSA groups as well. Fuck it, look at the Park Slope Food Coop, too.

First of all, the Key Food on 7th Avenue is way more expensive than the larger key Food on 5th Avenue. So, i would suggest shopping at the 5th Avenue one instead, for everything. if you can get to Fairway in Red hook, they are good for vegetables and stuff too. you can also check out joining urban Organic:

I will say this about urban organic, I had a very hard time with them and stopped my membership, but, maybe they have improved since then, don't know

If you can get there, try Rossman Farms on 3rd avenue & 26th street (I think). it's under the Gowanus Expressway. open 24/7 and is dirt cheap. I'm not saying it's the prettiest produce you'll ever see, but as long as you're planning on using it in a timely fashion, you can't beat the price and selection*.
*not for ps co-op comparisons

It's well north in PS, but I like Natural Land on Flatbush. It's expensive, but I find the quality can't be beat.

Absolutely loved it. When I moved to NYC, I looked at Urban Organic, but I found their setup to be a bit cumbersome (and, not living in a doorman building, I suspect the stuff would get stolen.) Maybe they've improved, but I found that it wouldn't work for me here.

Until a few grocery options opened in my neighborhood pretty recently that meet almost all of my needs, I was a fresh direct person. Coupons can be found online and you can usually get free shipping for the first few orders when you join up -- while it's not the cheapest for everything, it is always good (since you can't dig around the bin of apples for ones you want like at the store, they only give you good ones) and sometimes it IS the cheapest option in the area.

C-Town is pretty good. You're not going to get a story behind each fruit or vegetable, but the produce is reliable and they had good tomatoes before anybody else this year.
-
I had an Urban Organic subscription for months and was pretty happy with their vegetables, but had to cancel because their delivery schedule was extremely frustrating and inconsistent. C-Town does a pretty good job.

Probably most of the suggestions bear checking out. I garden; but for those things that aren't being produced in my backyard, I go to "3 Guys" on Ft. Hamilton Powys. and 65th Street. Prices have been better, but the produce is usually as good or better than most.

I find CTown's prices too high for most everything. there's also another delivery site called Basis. I haven't tried them, but, here's their info: http://goodfood.basisfoods.com/pages.php?pageid=34

Hey LTS, is C-Town that much worse than the 5th Ave. Key Food? I went in there a couple times with coupons and found their stuff to be not exactly a bargain.
-
I personally love 5th avenue Key food, they are definitely cheaper than 7th Avenue Key Food and am pretty sure they are cheaper than CTown on many things. They definitely have a much bigger selection of groceries and organic goods than CTown
