my roommate has been taking her cat to the 6th ave. animal clinic, and they have diagnosed her with the beginnings of renal failure, a thickening of the bladder wall, and a kidney stone (all related to the cat's hyperthyriodism - also diagnosed there) and have suggested surgery. she has heard rumblings that it might not be the best vet in the neighborhood and would like a second opinion AND suggestions about where to get surgery for the cat if that's what is needed. i'd love to show her a) any experiences you have had with the 6th ave. clinic - either bad or good b) suggestions regarding where else she should take her kitty. this is THE sweetest kitty in the whole world, and she isn't concerned with cost, so please reply with any information that you might have. THANKS in advance, anna

anna if you do a search there have been extensive discussions about vets in PS and PH. Good luck and hope the kitty is ok EDIT - I just found one of the discussions here http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2139

i just wanted to show her this thread with as much info as possible. she's sort of worried and wants to make the right choice for the cat so i think the more information / opinions i can show her, the better she will feel. that's all.

My cat just had a bladder stone removed at Animal Kind, 7th Ave & 12th? http://www.animalkind.com/ I have a Manhattan Vet Derm friend who stated that this is the place she recommends in Brooklyn. My main vet is Dr. Spiegal, the surgeon was Dr. Green. I amn quite pleased thus far. I have been going there for 4 months. My cat also needs to be monitored for potential kidney issues in the future. -
We didn't care for the 6th Avenue place (that's 6th Ave near Berkely, right? just to confirm - I don't want to give a bad report if I have the wrong place). They didn't seem very thorough and gave a diagnosis at one point about something for one of the cats that turned out to be completely untrue. We've been taking them to Animal Kind ever since (7th Ave. & roughly 12th Street - give or take a street). We know multiple people that take their pets there (dogs and cats) who have been happy with the care they received there. Especially Dr. Mateyak... she was great. http://www.animalkind.com Hope that helps... good luck with the kitty!

Just to clarify: are you referring to the Fifth Avenue Cat Clinic (on 5th and President) or the Sixth Avenue Animal Clinic (on 6th and Union, which does cats and other species)? I've used the Fifth Ave Cat Clinic and wasn't terribly impressed. The brothers who are vets are less than friendly. I've also used Animal Kind, which I liked much more.

After reading the previous postings that were linked here, I called Hope Vet and made a checkup appointment for my (fat) male kitty. What a world of difference! The woman on the phone was so pleasant and nice. When I called 5th Ave to have them transfer the records, the guy on the phone sounded like a mix between snide and dead. I'm going in to Hope on Saturday.. hope it's as good as you all have said! On a related topic: how often do you bring your pets in for check ups? We've had no medical issues at all, so we haven't brought our cats in in years. Now, I'm starting to get a little worried bc our male cat (3 yrs old) has gotten pretty fat and I'm starting to worry about diabetes. Any thoughts?

i just took my dog to Animal Kind on 7th ave after he had a seizure. they are great (too expensive for me tho). My cat just died of renal failure..very quickly. he was 15 years old.

i take my kitty to animal kind, because they're the only "hospital" in the area. if you're looking for the best care in the city, i'd hit the animal medical center in manhattan, pretty much like the mayo clinic for petswhat would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

Some of the best vets in the world are at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan E 62nd Street York http://www.amcny.org

oh wow, I'm so sorry. hang in there.like a smoked meat with an earthy youth overnote -
I sometimes take cats in for checkups especially if I'm switching vets. I've used Animal Kind and have had many horrible experiences with them. Hope is my favorite vet clinic right now - they're slightly cheaper than Animal Kind and 100x better. when I can find a carrier that'll hold him, I'll be taking my 17 lb monster there for an introduction.like a smoked meat with an earthy youth overnote

We use Prospect Park Animal Clinic at 105 Prospect Park West and 6th Street. 718-788-5519. The three vets are wonderful, and so is everyone else that works there. I have a diabetic cat so I am there VERY OFTEN! Good luck!

I agree that Prospect Park Animal Clinic is great. I've been taking my dogs there for years. Last spring, my rescued cat went into labor with a breech birth and then developed an infection, and they were able to save her and two of her babies. I love them.

i haven't gone there because i'm a vet snob and while i've heard great things about them the vets didn't go to vet school in america. (sorry, i come from a long line of vets and doctors so my opinions on this are skewed) plus, regardless of where you go i think it's important to understand the difference between using a clinic vs. a hospital. my silly cat harriet has a murmur and needs echocardiograms yearly to make sure it hasn't progressed, and clinics don't do them. and because it's her heart i like a board certified cardiologist or cardio specialist because i don't believe there are any veterinary cardiologists in brooklyn (they all likely go to the AMC). and yes, i know this is extreme. i don't have children. if i had more than one cat i'd end up as a cat lady which is why i only have one cat. but she has literally saved my life twice so hitting a hospital with a staff of vets who likely went to cornell vet. school is the only option i feel comfortable with. but, again, that's just me. no judgement on anyone else.what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r. -
I've been managing my cat's renal failure for over a year now (sadly she's in the end stage now and doesn't have long), and have had good experiences with Animal Kind (Dr Werner), Hope (Dr. Bierbrier), and Warren Emergency Hospital (Dr Humphreys). good luck and hang in there

I second (third? fourth?) the posters about Animal Kind being good. Dr. Karen Mateyak nursed my old girl-cat through her kidney disease and we were able to keep her with us for another 2-1/2 years. Dr. Mateyak is in the office from Wed - Sat and if you can do it, schedule your visits then with her. I don't understand people having bad experiences there, unless it's with some of the other, newer, doctors. I have had MANY bad experiences with the office staff, though, and somebody ought to spank them into shape. (messages not passed on, bags of supplies being wrong, etc.) I had a horrible Dr. Mengele experience with Dr. Silver? Silverman? 20 years ago at Prospect Park Clinic and never went there afterward. Could never understand how he survived unless he took many courses since then in empathy.
