Anyone know of a local person in the Park Slope area that I can trust to do wedding dress alterations? I would love to keep my business in the neighborhood, if possible.

I was thinking of trying out Yao's on 7th Avenue and 15th Street to get my wedding dress altered. She has done good work on a few of my dresses and my fiance's suits.

I know she Does fancy dresses so I thought I would see if she can do what I need for my wedding dress. I don't need major work so fingers crossed.

I'll let you know what I decide and how it comes out.

On theKnot.com the only place people seemed to be able to recommend was on 86th street in Manhatten.

Cool! I would love to hear how it works out. Please do let me know! I don't need major work either, so I'm hoping I can find someone local I can trust.

Hey there - OK so here's the follow up...

I went to Yao and, to her disappointment, she couldn't do what I needed. I need a bustle put in and a good amount of work so Yap didn't want to be responsible for all of it.

I DID find someone wonderful, marvelous and fantastic! Susan Ruddie (theweddingdresser@earthlink.net; 718.768.1531) is amazing! She lives IN PARK SLOPE and she comes to your place to do the fittings and everything which is just so wonderful. No need to trundle your shoes and veil around the world

Her prices are totally reasonable considering the magnificent job she is doing and she seems totally willing to work within a budget.

I can't say enough wonderful things about my experience with her. I had her come in for the first fitting and she was so attentive and did all the measurements and everything. She came back not too long ago to figure out the bustle and have me check the work she has done so far and it is perfect. I have never had a dress fit so well

I have total faith in her getting this done and she makes the whole process (weddings are stressful, even for someone like me who avoids stress like the plague!) so easy and that is just what I needed.

I will try to pop on once everything is done and the wedding is over to give a final YES everything worked out but I know there were a couple folks waiting on this.

      Susan Ruddie ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Oh man! I wish I knew how to Embed Images on this site but I am so lame! I just did my Bustle fitting with Susan and can't be silent on what a fabulous job she did.

It may have been more expensive than the dress but when you get an awesome deal on a wedding dress, you gotta expect to pay a little more on getting it fixed...sure Klienfelds does it for free but you pay $3grand for a dress I really would hope they would tailor it for free.

My sister got her dress at Klienfelds and I was with her through all the fittings and all I can say is not only is this ultimately FARRRR more inexpensive, but the service (OH THE SERVICE) is way better. The folks at Klienfelds were fine but nothing to drive anyone to Post crazy excited comments on a message board about!

I also used the fabulous Susan Ruddie for my wedding dress. I wanted to wear my mom's gown from her 1970 wedding, but it was too big and very outdated. I hired Susan to re-style it for me. She got rid of the long sleeves and high neck, recut the dirndle skirt into a mermaid, used the lace to create a v-neck bodice with cap sleeves and added a panel to create a dropped waist. It came out beautifully, with the essence of my moms gown but modern and stylish. I get married on June 14th and am so excited to wear it. After the wedding she said she shorten and dye my wedding dress.

She also made my headpiece and helped my husband shop for his suit. Susan is a costume designer, milliner and fabric dyer and has a great eye. I don't think she has a web site but you can see her design work on the MArk Morris Dance Group web site.

spring04- do you happen to have any idea on what she would charge to shorten and dye a wedding dress? I still have mine and will most likely donate the dress, but if it affordable I might be persuaded to alter it.

My dress was silk, not very full and I just wanted to tint it to a taupe color. The dyeing part was $150. I had her separate the bodice from the skirt so I could wear it like a bustier with jeans, and to make a short skirt to go with it that I could wear on my honeymoon. It cost $75 to separate and make the top and finish the long skirt. She also took the crystals from my headpiece and wired them into a bracelet! I am not obsessive about recycling, I just thought it was fun to be able to wear my wedding stuff all summer.

      Subject: Susan Ruddie is AMAZING!!!!

I just had my wedding dress altered by Susan. I am pretty clueless when it comes to these things and had no idea the amount of work my particular dress needed. I had a budget and Susan worked with me. Every time I asked for something to be done, it was fixed to perfection. Initially I thought to go to a bridal salon, as to not miss out on an the experience, but my experience with Susan exceeded any expectations I had. She came to my home and it was so personal. She is a wonderful woman and extremely talented at her craft. My only suggestion is to book her as soon as you can.

Subject: I found her - the wedding dresser moved!

The Wedding Dresser has a new phone number - 347-743-8493 and has moved across the park. Susan is now in Prospect Park South and has expanded her business to include several dressmakers and a tailor. I got my dress at Bridal Reflections and had not heard good things about their alterations. Susan did an amazing job and did things the shop probably would not have, like shortening my hem from my waist because I am a petite and my trumpet skirt was flaring in all the wrong places. I also liked working with her because she has a great business model - to raise sewing from being low paid women's work to a being a good job that pays a good wage to her seamstresses. I went to her studio for one fitting and she had so many fun things, vintage flowers and beaded pieces she makes into headpieces. Be sure to ask about accessories and she will bring them to you.
