Subject: What's this new pole on my street??
I'm on 10th and 7th Avenue....someone installed a very large metal pole in front of the massage place next to Red Hot...it's about a foot in diameter, and maybe 12-15 feet high. Nothing is attached to it, and it's clearly not a light pole. I have no idea what this thing is, but someone said he thought Verizon had done the install. Any ideas?Brooklynian » Forum » Park Slope »

it may be a vent for transformer located under the street. Such vents are often simply hollow pipes to allow heat out.For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

I'll bet it's a cell antenna. There's one in front of the Armory on 8th ave. I think it's the one that been broken for months causing all the trouble with ATT iPhone's in the neighborhood.Starting a list of users names who are actually the same person: west1440, DownwardPuppy, TruthandBeauty, Stretchy, RupaulRox, NarcolepticAbe, QuantumSilence, SoldierSantana, SouljaJuan, TrendPotter, THREEKxdz, HomeEida

. could it be a phallic symbol from the pride parade.
-
Hamilton.. that was not a good guess.
-
Now I'm thinking it's a Festivus pole, except it's too thick.

They just installed one on 16th street. Wonder what they are for

My guess is to communicate with aliens or summon Cthulhu. Either way, they probably will be discovered to be causing cancer in 20 years so you should probably just move now.

Perhaps a new project by Christof and Jeanne-Claude, like The Gates?Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

hmm given there are 2 conduit stub-ups from the concrete protruding, it will clearly be a pole to house electric, or electronic equipment. My guess is either a cell repeater, or traffic camera.
-
I don't know what is crazier, the pole or the fact that I walk past it every day and have not noticed it.
-
Maybe it i has something to do with Lost.

just curious... anyone know why they would have to have a pole? I would assume FIOS goes via actual wires, and not over the air. humDid Someone Say Walk? -
The only thing I can think of is that they are going to use "something makes heat." For example, the "bad fios" comes up one stub-up to the top of the pole. It would then goes thru the thing that is going to be mounted at the top of the pole that will create heat and make it into "good fios". Finally, the "good fios" will go into the ground thru the other stub. By putting said magic device on a pole, they don't have to install one of those sidewalk grates that are always screwed up by stuff like piles of cigarette butts, standing water from rain, and caustic salt from winter snow removal. Grates need a surprising amount of maintenance.... Stuff on the top of poles might just need to be bird proof. ....electrical engineers think about such things, I'm optimistic someone will send me an honorary degree based on this post. P.S. That's a serious looking pole. I guessed earlier that you had gotten a simple "vent duct pole thing", but would have never guessed that if I had seen the picture before making my guess. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
