Tried posting this earlier, but think I deleted it. Stupid, delicious bourbon Anyway, I give up. Too damn hot to sleep in this weather. Anyone know of a place in PS to get a window unit? I figure PC Richards or CostCo are the best/closest/cheapest places, but wanted to kmow If there's a place closer to North Slope. Looking for a good enough unit for the bedroom (D.R., please note this "unit" is an air-conditioning unit), which is maybe a couple hundred sq. feet. Thanks.

Lowes der

PC Richards on Atlantic, across from the Target Mall Also, check craigslist, more then half the price but you need to make sure you ask the usual questions and make sure the condition is good(\__/)

there's a place on 7th ave and president street....jr's maybe it's called? if you see something somewhere for less money, tell the guy and he'll usually give it to you for the same price. they're a local mom and pop type store...
-
that would be: J & R Appliances 718 638 3040 108 7th Ave (not related to the huge store near the Brooklyn Bridge).
-
I have LG air conditioners, they are quiet and have a slide out chassis making them easy to install and remove. Home Depot carries them. I tired one of the Frigidaire from Lowes last year but thought I had installed a jet engine in the window and it didn't have a slide out chassis so was a real PITA to get in and out
-
I would go to Home Depot or Lowes -- best prices I've seen around.
-
Thanks. I appreciate all the advice. I think I'll shop around the big chains for a price and then see if J & R on 7th will match it so I can give some cash to a local business.
-
Once you decide what model you want, check Drimmers Appliance on Coney Island Avenue (877-338-3500; http://www.drimmers.com/). They often offer better prices than most other retailers. Prices are shown on their website.

What about giving some cash to the people that helped you make the decision, gave you advice, and paid to have inventory on hand for you to inspect? -
Leopoldi's Hardware (5th Avenue between 7th & 8th) also sell acs. We normally go to PC Richards but we had to get a new one this year and walked over there. And they lent us a hand truck to get it home (one of the guys there also said he could drop it off after he got off of work)Peanuts

^^ Luuuuurve Leopoldi's.

If they do it then pay them X amount more (your determination). Now that scenario really seems like supporting "local business." I do get BrooklynJacks point as well but I guess my heart is in supporting the local small business owner rather than the chain BUT just because I "knew" what the lowest price I could get somewhere else I just couldn't get comfortable paying it to local guy. Is my logic flawed on this? I am willing to hear that. Bottom line.. it is really hot for June. I hope the OP has an A/C unit in their window by now. -

While admirable (giving extra), it's really up to the retailer. If the retailer can't make enough profit selling to me at the lowest rate, it's their choice to say yes or no. Sorry, but I'm going to try for the best deal when I'm spending a couple of hundred dollars. For now, I'm using one of those horrible, wheeled, portable units. Those are useless, btw. Won't be making that mistake again. -
OK.. Anthonycm.. I get your point. Guess I have lived in MY idealistic Park Slope too long.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone offered. I plan on supporting my local store, Leopoldi's, as a result of everyone's suggestions. You guys just saved me an afternoon.Don't hate the hipster, hate the Irony!

Being a local business owner, and knowing how hard it is for your community businesses to survive these days, i suggest Brooke's Appliance on 7th ave between 11th and 12th. I'm pretty sure they even install it for you.
-
I just bought an A/C from Brooke's Appliance.... bought in the morning they came and installed it in the afternoon. A plus for Brooke's.
-
Make/Model price?
-
Brooke's is close to where I live and I've purchased a few items from there, including my current a/c unit. Pop in there and see what they have.
-
I bought my last one at PC Richards. After telling me how reliable it (a portable unit) was, the salesmen spent like 5 minutes trying to get me to buy an extended warranty by telling me it would break in a year. But that was maybe 3 years ago, and its still working fine.
-
j&r on 7th ave is the best. their prices are competitive and they'll install it for you.

omg, this is so typical of PC. I went in there to buy a new tv last week and they had a Coby 32" on sale for $350, which is at least $100 cheaper than any other 32", but I went with the LG 22" for $300 because of it's reliability, but then proceeded to get a 3-year extended warranty. I kept asking the guys why I shouldn't buy the Coby and they're like, it's crap, they break after 3 months. And it's like, um, if I have a warranty, why does it matter, again? So my new LG is great, but my room definitely could have used the 32"! -
Looked at a couple of places and ultimately ended up purchasing at Brooke's last Saturday. Important note: They do deliver, but it seems to only be within walking distance. Since I'm closer to GAP, I ended up calling Eastern and carrying it home myself. Not a big deal, but wanted people to be aware.
-
What did you buy? For how much?
-
my ac bit it today so im in the market as well...id love to hear what people bought locally and for how much before i trek all over the hood with my stupid granny cart (and yes I'm going to call but its nice to hear concrete experiences.) I'm in the market for an 8k btu...whoa hey whoa hey whoa
-
I don't want to say how much I paid, but the people at Brooke's definitely worked with me on the price, so I would take whatever price you see on the box as a suggestion, and then try to talk them down. I ended up with a 10K BTU Frigidaire. Yes, it's a bit louder than some, but the noise from it doesn't bother me, and it keeps my room nice and frosty. Also, check Amazon and Lowe's. Lowe's normally has free delivery when purchasing an item over $75, and if you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free 2 day delivery from them. Good luck.

Bought 2 AC's from Brookes... their prices are taxed, but they are close to me and did install the same day. However, after the first AC was installed we noticed a freaking draft coming in from a few places... which is lame after you pay $150 for them to install it... they ultimately made it right though. That being said, next time I need an AC or any appliance, I'm going to try J & R. They fixed my LCD tv same day and for a good $200 less than I was prepared to spend

Carmen » I'm in the market for an 8k btu...
Home Depot has the 8K BTU LG for $199. My LG's are great, top rated by consumer reports and very quiet. Only thing better is a Friedrich, which J&R (the one on Park Row, not JR Appliance in the slope) sells for $299 for the 7,800 BTU
