Isabel Cruz » "We want to make sure as many neighbors as possible know about the recent violent attack at 206 and the dangerously slow police response time. Please make every effort to attend next Tuesday's 78th precinct meeting so we can collectively voice our concerns and recommendations. Details below:Over the weekend, there were apparently at least 3 separate muggings within our 2 block area (St Marks- Flatbush to Vanderbilt), including a violent attack in front of 206.
Here is a description of the latter, written by our neighbor, Jezra Kaye, to our councilwoman, Tish James:
"You might know about this already, but at about 2:30am last night (Friday), a male/female couple was mugged in front of 206 St. Marks Avenue, between Carlton and Vanderbilt, by two guys armed with a baseball bat. The woman was hurt, though conscious, and was ultimately taken away in an ambulance, but the most upsetting aspect of this was that, in spite of about a dozen people being out on the street to help her and multiple calls to 911, it took the police 15 minutes to respond. Since we're literally two blocks from the precinct house, it's a little hard for us to swallow the long delay."
As a result of this recent violence and dangerously slow response time by the police, all neighbors are strongly encouraged to attend next Tuesday's 78th police precinct meeting. This will be an opportunity for us to voice our concerns and offer recommendations.
Meeting details:
Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30pm
78th Precinct
65 6th Ave (at Bergen)
http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precincts/precinct_078.shtmlI am happy to be a point person for this meeting. Feel free to email me (idncruz@gmail.com) if you plan to attend and want to coordinate your observations, concerns, and suggestions. Likewise, if you are NOT able to attend but have concerns, suggestions etc, please also pass them on.
See you next Tuesday? The more of us that are present, the more seriously they will take us.
Best, Isabel Cruz
Note: Isabel is right, as a result of the Arena, Vanderbilt is now covered by the 78th Pct. ...it used to be covered by the 77th.
^only the west side of Vanderbilt, I believe. East side of Vanderbilt is still in the 77th. Either way, sounds like this attack was squarely in the (new) 78th.
I put in a 911 call a couple weeks ago after witnessing some crazy road rage by a livery cab driver on Plaza St just west of Vanderbilt. Dispatcher didn't seem at all confused by the new 77th/78th split (presumably it just pops up on a screen based on the address they input).
My car was involved in a minor (no damage) fender bender downtown Brooklyn. The other driver insisted on calling the police and filing a resport. They did not show for THREE (3) hours even after multiple calls from both drivers. One officer that was stationed across the street for Homeland Security duties, refused to leave her post to take the report. We finally ended up flagging down a random police car driving by. I'm convinced no one shows up for anything that doesn't include the words "officer involved" "gun" and "dying".
Response time is not likely to change unless folks complain.
...and the police get more police.
