devincf » I didn't know it was called Albaz until just now, but the food there is good, especially late at night.

The people watching there late at night can be fantastic. While I waiting for my food to be prepared, some young pimp came in to feed the ladies on his arms. Reminded me of that line from Mo' Better Blues: "Other guys feed you lines, but I take you to Mickey D's!"

i think that the american fried chicken place, might be the same place on franklin that sells these greasy little fried nuggets of potato, cheese, onion and possibly jalepeno, definately salt...called munchers? i think that's the place, open really late. i had them once, and while they were fantastic post-drinkup eating, i believe they gave me heartburn for DAYS, so i haven't had them since.

pitu » I heard that the Coop is going to start selling the kind of cheese curd you make fresh mozz from. I know NOTHING about cheese curd except it is not in NYC and my SO always has to bring it to people from Minnesota.

Ahhhh!!! The MN state fair!!! Cheese curds!!! That, and all of the best food-on-a-stick that you could imagine! I take it that your SO is a MN native? I really need to get back there for the fair some time in the next couple years- I think that my arteries are starting to soften up and unclog- I can't have that!!!

i like the Parkside because it is the LEAST yuppie that i've been to in the area, the cheapest, and the most like a real diner. i grew up in jersey though so it isn't the same, but its the closest in the area. more authentic diners can be found down in the southernmost ends of brooklyn... bay ridge, benshonhurst, sheepshead bay. thats the most like a jersey diner to me. i cant stand yuppie diners that wish they were fancy resteraunts.

whats the one in park slope with all the bicycles on the wall? i like bicycles, but i remember it being way too expensive for a diner. theres ano ther one on 5th ave that i went to very late after drinking all night, i liked that one, the waitress reminded me of my grandma. maybe it was called julies?

but parkside is sometimes depressing, and what is up with them serving pizza now? i used to go there for brunch a lot but now i'd choose new prospect cafe, which isn't a diner at all.. but they have really good salmon eggs benedict.

      Ahh, Parkside,

      1) I like the turkey burger. Fries are pretty good.

      2) I tried the pizza last night. Not too shitty. I'll get it again when I am lazy and want enough pizza for a week (big pie).

      Oiseau »
just where around here can I get food at 3 am on a Wednesday morning?

I know about Bageltique in PS but that's kind of a hike...

Albaz or better known as the diner that's in the newspaper stand/deli on Flatbush, right at where the Q train stairs come out on the Park Slope side. Got it? In the back there's a diner with people playing Quick Draw (something to do while you wait for your food). Actually they make a pretty decent burger.
yes. yes. yes. their cheeseburger is fuckin bombtastic. and I ate it with 3 DHers. YUM

Anyone have any other ideas?? I'd love to know- my wife and I both often work late.

It's not exactly in PH but close -- City Lights Diner at Atlantic and 3rd is open 24 hours. It's a pretty basic greasy-spoon diner, nothing special. They do have good fries though.

So now that I live right across the street from Purity, it appears that this theoretically convenient food source has the world's oddest/shortest hours. The awning outside that says Open 24 hours is a big lie. You're lucky if they're open for three hours in the afternoon.

Business tip if you operate a restaurant: you have to be open for people to give you money.

I had the single worst meal of my entire adult life at City Lights. I love greasy spoons, but spoons covered in crud and syrup is another thing. It has been nearly a year and I haven't gotten over that meal!

Yeah, I'm not necessarily recommending it, but it IS always open. The service is really hit-or-miss too -- some of the waitresses are really nice and attentive, but there's this one old guy who's grumpy, nasty, oblivious, and probably racist (I've seen him be really nasty to black patrons).

So, they are still officially open? It seems like they've been closed for weeks on end. Though, I only walk by in the evening...

I got a delicious cheesesteak from the place referred to by someone as "Albaz," the one in the back of the deli-grocery that's filled with drunk assholes and broken dreams. Man, they made a good cheesesteak though, although, considering my state at that point, I probably would've enjoyed just about anything. Closer than City Lights, though, which I'm aware of but have never been to because I can't get my stoned ass further than 3 blocks away.

Albaz rules. Mrs. Carnivore and I went with John last night. The cheeseburger really hit the spot (don't forget to ask for fried onions). And John's cheesesteak also looked good (I'll definitely have to try that next time).

Ok, I guess the NY definition of a diner is very different than what I experienced for the last 12 years in NJ. But I'll take Le Gamin and Carne Viento over a diner any day.

I thought the same thing! But I think he means El Gran Castillo.

The menu for Le Gamin looked alright, but it does seem a little fancier than I like to be if I'm drinking up a storm.

      Subject: Cheese Curd!

You should be able to find cheese curd in an Italian cheese or charcuterie type market. It is also used to make fresh mozzarella. Most markets will only sell it in a 5# tub. But it freezes well (so does fresh mozz). If you do not think you can use all 5# at once (Ha), then portion it wrap it well

      and freeze it!

I think I bought some once from Fratelli Ravioli....

      Good luck!

I think that the diner definition that bewitched refers to, the jersey/long island definition, can't really apply to any of these places, unless purity starts operating according to its sign. Diners, on LI and I believe in Jersey, all have like exactly the same menu at the same prices, and they're all open 24 hours a day. The reason for this phenomenon, at least on Long Island, is apparently some sort of Greek mafia. Granted, this is hearsay from some dude who used to date the roommate of some girl I used to date, but he had all sorts of inside information, because his previous girlfriend, he claimed, was the daughter of a diner owner. Apparently all the long island diners are owned by like 3 or 4 families, so prices and menus are essentially controlled to prevent competition.

Not that I particularly care about the racketeering, anyone who serves me grilled cheeses with bacon with all the free pickles I want (just ask, they'll provide!) at 3 am is OK in my book.

now, I don't mean to gripe, but...y'all should just go out and find the places yoselves.

BACK IN THE DAY, WHEN I WAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND IT WAS HELL, PEOPLE WALKED AROUND AND FOUND THE DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH FOR THEMSELVES. HELL, THE DINERS HAD ROACHES RUNNING ACROSS THE COUNTERS, SURE, BUT THE GUYS KNEW YOUR DAMN NAME CUZ YOU WAS DODGING BULLETS TO GET IN THE DOOR FROM DAY TO DAY. AND NOW YOU WANT YOUR NIFTY ONLINE COMMUNITY TO TELL YOU WHAT'S WHAT. FOR SHAME!

oh, snap, you've been gentriconfrontified! But I do believe it. The diners ain't hard to find and walking around the nabe is the best way to find other cool things and meet cool people.

The Usual has a great neighborhood feel but the food is pretty average. Vote: The Usual.

I will never go to the Usual again after my sister and I had the RUDEST WAITRESS EVER a few weeks ago.

First she was testy because it took us too long to order (apparently conversation before breakfast is a no-no there); then she literally threw us out before we were even done because she wanted to seat the one party waiting at the door; THEN she brought the party to sit down at our table before we had even gotten up to leave; and FINALLY she refused to help me find something I thought I had left behind in my haste to vacate, forcing me to instead interrupt the table of new diners to see if they'd seen it ... considering how accommodating we were to her rude requests, I thought we at least deserved an ounce of courtesy in response. But no.

Tom's Diner is the best, Suzanne Vega Wrote the song about that place, They have a signed copy of the lyrics framed on the wall. they just need to be open for dinner and sunday brunch. sheesh can't they just hire a evening staff and a compitent manager to over see things when Gus is singing in the choir on sundays? he'd doubble his income...

Plus anyplace that has a glowing apple and rose tree is cool with me, even if it is a fake one, ( the real ones are hard to come by)...

"Tom's Diner" was written in Tom's Restaurant, it's really about Tom's Restaurant, on 112th Street and Broadway in New York City, and it was really written from the point of view of my friend Brian, who is a photographer, and had made a comment to me one day that he felt that as a photographer, he saw his whole life through a pane of glass, and always felt like he was the witness to a lot of things, but was never really involved in them. So I was sitting at Tom's Restaurant one morning, and suddenly I guess I got this weird feeling, it came over me, and I thought, 'well, if I were Brian today, how would I be perceiving these different things? And in a way it was supposed to be slightly humorous, and not entirely to be taken totally seriously. And also I thought of it from a male point of view. I'd originally heard it with piano in back, but I don't play piano, so it's a capella.

Is it still open? I was sitting in Tavern on Dean a couple of weeks ago in the evening and Purity had the lights off and the gate down.

It has been closed for some time now but Im not sure if they are closed for good. I still wouldn't eat there even if they open up again - just my opinion though

The Purity/s were dumps no matter what location they're on. The Union and 7th was horrid, and I'm talking really awful after it was bought from the old owner/s, and the 7th and 7th is a tad cleaner but the food is just as sucky.
