Totally bummed that Hing Lung Kitchen packed up shop and left Vanderbilt Ave. It was our favorite quick and inexpensive gah I haven't figured out what's for dinner lets get Chinese place. They will be missed. They told us they were moving to Washington, but we never found out why. Anyone know what's going to go there?

It was shit. I'm still waiting for some real Chinese in the 'hood. I think we can sustain a nice Cantonese or Sichuan place.

They own the mediocre sit down Chinese place on Washington, next to Bar Corvo.

      Maybe they are consolidating.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

They lost their lease. They consolidated with the place on Washington and can still be reached at the same phone number.

And that's the way it is.

the inappropriately named Holland Cafe on Fulton/Vanderbilt is surprisingly good. if you're in their delivery range i recommend: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/holland-cafe/menu

Bummer - I too, liked the place. Delivery was so quick I didn't have time to criticize the food. I have been wondering why they've been attaching another restaurant's menu to each delivery lately. At least Purbird delivers.

I never ordered from this place, but they were my "go to" place for a quick soda.

Any bets on what will replace it?

They made good shrimp toast. Crispy & greasy.

They told me they were moving and gave me the new menu for Colala. Prices are a couple bucks higher for everything, but the same stuff is available.

Having tried all the the tofu and broccoli at every cheap chinese place within a mile or so—including a few that are long gone—I thought Hing Lung's was the best. So I'm glad it hasn't vanished.

Vanderbilt currently lacks a small, sedate wine bar. Given the area's rapid change, one might succeed.

For a hot second there before it's current form of Plan B, that space was a sedate wine bar. Then one day it closed for a holiday weekend, fired the staff, and renovated for months giving Vanderbilt what it has now.

Did the owners switch from wine bar to Plan B because a wine bar was ahead of it's time or because they really wanted to do a sports bar type place?

Also, Beast was supposed to have a strong emphasis on wine, being that you got these (I think stupid) half carafs instead of a glass.

As a side note, is anyone else thankful those paintings on the side of Beast were painted over? When did that happen? One of the bartenders painted them but ugh. I think the property values went up after they got rid of them.

Pretty sure the owners of the wine bar mentioned above are not in any way related to the owners of Plan B...

I could also see a Soup/Salad/sandwich place in that location.

Under the category of "quick lunch food", Vanderbilt has pizza and burritos, but doesn't have anything that caters to those who are perpetually on a diet.

This is a growing market segment.

What is now the mayonnaise shop between Bergen and St. Marks was a place (Olde Brooklyn Bagel?), owned by the guy who has (had?) the architecture or contractor storefront next to the Sunburnt Calf. It used to serve soups, sandwiches, panini, coffee, ice cream etc. It didn't get that many customers. It got some, but when the items are all lowish cost it may be hard to make enough to pay employees, rent and still make a profit.

dougallcurrie: I certainly would ask them, but I was pretty sure it was the same owners. I frequented both places and spoke with the employees at one point. But sure, it's possible I was wrong on that front. It was a while ago and my memory isn't completely golden.

The owners of "Half" wine bar and "planB" are different folks.

i will also miss hing, as i found out the hard way tonight. was my go-to place for years for generous and perfectly steamed shrimp and vegggies and when i needed to get steamed chicken and white rice for the dog having g.i. probs. also loved their hotnsour soup. i ordered tonite and the food came from the colala place. was quick enough, but they dont have the small size for everything, it's more $$, and i was not feeling their hot and sour. any alternatives for good cheap quick chinese? im thinking of trying ruby's on flatbush and 7th, next to the liquor store.

Huh, I like Colala's hot and sour! There's Number 1 Kitchen on Washington - I think it's underwhelming but it's certainly cheap and quick.

Even though Half failed, there might be room for a wine bar on Vanderbilt - the problem with Half was more that the people running it had no idea how to run a business than the basic idea. I also think that location would do well for a kid-oriented shop, being so close to the Montessori school and the Kumon center.

J's Wong on Park Place and Franklin delivers surprisingly fresh, veggie-filled fare for a song. It gets my vote. I think they'll deliver over to Vanderbilt.

Re: a wine bar, I heard for months that the space across the street from Plan B was going to become a wine bar, but it's now a clothing store.

I agree that a well-run, well-stocked wine bar with light fare would likely do well at this stage. One of the odd aspects of Half was the "lifestyle store", which featured sex books and other such items. Not that I was offended, it just was an unusual thing to find in a wine bar, much like finding a shelf of calculus books in a tapas restaurant.

Ordered from Colala last night - the process was better than it was at Hing Lung. They moved into the 20th century by recognizing my address from the phone number alone, and it sounded like the same woman as always taking the order.

The food was a dollar or two more expensive, and the "free soda" options kick in at $15 and $30 instead of $12 and $25 (or whatever it was).

Delivery was fast, but not as fast.

Food (Chicken and Broccoli with garlic sauce, boneless spare ribs, sesame noodles, dumplings) was almost identical, which is a good thing or bad thing depending on your personal tastes. Portions were definitely smaller, with the dumplings numbering at only 6 and a practically skimpy amount of ribs. Again, a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your health and tastes.
