here's esdc's game plan for sunday
pay attention
that plan is fucking awful.. why the hell would you make 4th ave a 1 way and divert the traffic to 3rd ave just to turn back onto flatbush... that person who made that happen needs to die a horrible "TRUE DEATH"
Couldn't disagree more. The 4th Ave intersection with Atlantic and Flatbush has been a nightmarish jam for years. Traffic is constantly backing up from the Flatbush intersection and preventing westbound flow on Atlantic towards 278 and the Brooklyn Bridge.
The new changes should make a big difference for the better.
Homer knows best in these situations
That intersection backs up because you can no longer go through Hanson Place or Ashland Place. That block was originally designed to have four possible outlets, straight to Hanson, straight then left to Ashland, and left and right onto Flatbush. When DOT shut down that outlet, it then caused that Flatbush intersection to become a problem. By also turning Lafayette from a two way from Fulton Street into a one way, crossing from the north side of Atlantic to the south side, or the east side of Flatbush to the west side is an exercise in futility.
DOT is in the process of fixing something that is the result of their actions. Had the original street pattern been left in place drivers would have plenty of options instead of all traffic being funneled into chokepoints which are then used as an excuse for more "calming".
That may be true, but what's in place now is untenable. Better something than nothing. I suppose we'll see how bad it becomes.
What has been pissing me off more than that is the construction at the 278 West on-ramp from 3rd Ave. Closing this entrance creates a massive jam going down 3rd Ave all the way down to 55th street. Simultaneously, they're doing construction on 3rd Ave right by the 55th street on-ramp. Did these events really have to take place at the same time? And how long can this possibly take? They built a damn bridge in LA in a weekend...
You're assuming that DOT wants to do anything that benefits the public. I think they plan to inconvenience everyone.
What is their motivation for wanting to inconvenience everyone? Sounds rather diabolical.
Eastbloc-
If you believe that we have eaten the last bit of doughnut (see Simpsons clip above), whatever the DOT does to us is now fair.
Personally, I think the DOT and the guys who sell water have formed a profit sharing arrangement. By backing up traffic, more water bottles are sold.
the DOT fucking sucks.. it ranks amongst the worst group of humans (on my list) when it comes to city officials..
the 4th ave thing just completely sucks.. they must have had the bullshit plan in the works for a while since making 3rd ave a one way.... i HATE the DOT..
WTF are they doing with Vanderbuilt @ grand army plaza... REALLY making it into another 1 LANE traffic jam to "cause" traffic
and WHY... talked to 1 of those water sellers.. dude says he makes on avg 350 a DAY.. TAX FREE .. shiiiit im in the wrong profession clearly !
Supreme-
I bet he also has access to lots of cold water while he works.
Maybe one day folks will learn to forgo discretionary car trips and use public transportation, walk, bike, or all of the above.
Back in the 1970s the DOT was doing work on the East River Drive and traffic was slow as crap for TWO YEARS. The repair job was only supposed to take six months. Someone finally woke up and went down to talk to the head guy and they discovered that no one had the blueprints of what was to be done and basically nothing was getting done. So, the problems you're writing about here are really nothing new.
It took LIRR 8 years to complete Atlantic terminal.
...it may be something in the water at that intersection
Hahaha. Oh, wait, it's not April fools?
I think a more effective plan would be to have Magic Sparkle Baby Pony carry cars over the intersection. And more realistic too.
